    I read somewhere that you paint your nails, wait 30 seconds then put them in cold water for 15 second and wait another 30 seconds when you take them out of the water and it actually works great for me! c:

    I use this hack EVERY TIME I paint my nails and I've never been disappointed. I do it differently then what you did though. I just randomly put my fingers in at different times like alternating hands and fingers, leaving them in for like 10 seconds at a time. It works great!

  • @amiyasantiago5509
    @amiyasantiago5509 Před 9 lety +178

    It's not gonna completely dry them all the way through. It's supposed to dry the top layer of the polish so in case you bump it it doesn't smudge. It won't all the way through, but maybe if you did one coat put it in the bowl for a minute and a half and dried your hand off did the second coat and put your hand in for another minute and a half it would work better because it's one coat at a time. Not exactly sure though. Just a suggestion

    When I paint my nails I usually apply this method, but when I do I only do it for about 10-20 secs and I do each individual fingers at a time ( paint, then dip, paint then dip, etc,) and it works fine for me, but I have also noticed different brands have different affects.

    The cold water does freeze your polish, but when you take them out as the freezing starts to stop the air on your nails is cold which dries them faster, that is also why shaking your hands can help dry them faster than just having them sit on you table or resting place.

    Subscribing because I love this series :) I've tried the cold water trick. It does work but my fingers are pretty much about to fall off each time I do it so I try to give my fingers a few breaks in between rather than submerge for an entire 3 mins.

    I do this all the time. But the way I do it (which works for me and my mom every time) is that after we paint our nails we let it air dry for 1-2mins (nothing exact) then while we are letting it try we set up the bowl with ice. We don't keep it in for 3mins. we keep it in but if it starts to feel too cold we take it out then put one hand in then the other and 3-5mins later (whenever you feel they're ready) take them out. It works every time. The way you showed was odd to me and just seemed painful that you had to keep your hand submerged for 3mins. Maybe try this way and you'll have better results :)

    I have put my hands in cold water since I was little! It doesn't have to be ice water though! We've always just filled our bathroom sink with cold tap water and let them sit for a few minutes and it has always worked for me and I am very fidgety!

  • @MysteryGirl5684

    After I painted my nails, I would just submerge them in lukewarm water for a few seconds or so and they, believe it or not, became ABSOLUTELY DRY! I don't know if my polish is different from others but I always use the Essie brand.

  • @vegaflingza5252
    @vegaflingza5252 Před 9 lety

    There's a way to do this that's much quicker. MUCH quicker. and, less cold for your hands. What you do is you put your wet nails under running sink water (the water being just dripping, running a little so it doesn't make holes in your polish) and you hold one nail at a time under the water, each nail for about 10-20 seconds. It doesn't always get them COMPLETELY dry (you still have to be kinda cautious about what you touch) but it works well! I've done this so many times and let me just say, it is a LIFESAVER. you save like 5 minutes of waiting time for them to air-dry (or 3 minutes for putting your hands in a bowl of ice water) So, good tip for the future! :)

    I don't use the cold water method for the exact reason that my fingers can't take the coldness! xD
    Instead I use Pam Baking Spray, the olive oil one. I also have different ones and haven't tried to see if sprays other than the olive oil one work, but honestly the spray works really well. I just spray it on not too close to my nails and wait a few minutes and they're dry! I'm usually skeptical though about washing off the oil, so I try to be gentle with the nails, but in the end it's totally worth it because they're dry lmao.

    This is super late, but as other people have said (and this is coming from a guy), it's something salons will tell you to do to prevent immediate smudging. It's just temporary and once is softens back up a bit you're still liable for a couple nicks if you're not careful. I find it more easily trackable without it, because I can watch my nails dry and check them every once in a while, and I've gotten a pretty good idea of how long it takes for my favorite nail polishes to dry. Trusting things like this gives you that false confidence that makes it *more* likely for you to smudge just because you assume it's not a problem anymore.
    EDIT: btw love your vids, as a guy who recently got into painting his nails I'm all over the place with researching what the best polishes/techniques are

    Try 30 sec in olive oil. Actually any oil for 10 sec will do, I usually split the difference and do ~20 sec in olive or coconut (almond also works). It doesn't fully dry polish but it will definitely take to the no longer wet/sticky and about 75% set, w/in 2 min I'm good to go. Little messy just have a towel at the ready.

  • @NicoleLauby
    @NicoleLauby Před 9 lety +1

    I'm a little late to the game, but your best bet is to bust out your hair dryer, give 'em hell for a minute or so, and follow up with some good cuticle oil and a little extra TLC when grabbing around the bottom of your purse for your keys. Nail polish is all about volatile compounds that are mixed with the pigments evaporating and leaving behind the shiny, gorgeous color. You can cut a minute or two off the dry time, but your best bet is to have patience. I will say, however, that a shot of icy cold tap water after the hair dryer and cuticle oil is a nice boost for hardness right out of the gate. Still, gals... Be careful with your candy painted digits!

    @sweetlorikeet Před 9 lety +1

    Yeah, it doesn't really DRY it as such, it just makes it hard. If it's not properly dry by the time your fingers start to get warm again they'll still smudge - so basically if it's a polish that dries quickly then you're good, but if that's the case you probably don't even need to use the cold water.

  • @hello0959
    @hello0959 Před 9 lety

    Heat makes nail polish destabilise while cold water makes it harden. The nail polish doesn't actually freeze. If you think about it, the bonds holding the chemical compounds together need heat to break them which is why you need to keep nail polish away from heat

    The chemials in the nail polish react with the temperature of the non-acidic liquid. In other words, the colder the water, the quicker they will dry and the more chance they will dry!

    I never knew you could do this. I just started to do mine at home. You know, inflation at all, so I can't really go to the salon like I used to for the last 20 years. So, I got into doing them at home. And now I'm getting into the stamps and the gel powder dip. And I have a question. Will "ice water bath" trick work on either one or both of those kinds of applications? Hope I can still post on this. And you see it or someone does and can give me some information. I have an air dryer for nails but not a u v light one, which I will be investing in very soon. Thanks to anybody who can respond or see this and help me..

    Ice dont dry the polish, it just hardens it temporarily but once your hands warm back up it still smudges. And this is also painful. Just buy fast drying polish.

    if u run cold swatter out of the foset it really works and u only have to put them under the dosed for five seconds and I do that all the time and it only takes five seconds

    You had too many layers on--this trick only works with one thin layer of polish, then you use the ice water for a minute/minute and a half, then you do your next layer and repeat the process.

      Tyla Cohen yeah foe sure this dries faster with thin layer of polish only. If u put like crazy nothing will help but time... lot of time 😂

    Use fast drying top coat apply seche vite and two mins later it's solid it's amazing and it's quicker then the 3 mins of freezing your hands and it's super glossy any fast dry top coat that's just the one I use

  • @Flubberduckie
    @Flubberduckie Před 9 lety

    I use this all the time!! I usually wait until they are tacky,like 2 minutes post topcoat. Then instead of three straight minutes i do 30 seconds one hand then switch and do that for 5 minutes (then they aren't freeeezing and they are 100% rock hard)

  • @marwamendes6836
    @marwamendes6836 Před 8 lety

    The coldness from the ice water freezes the top surface of the nail polish under the top layer is still wet but the water freezes only the top layer

  • @stevenA44
    @stevenA44 Před 6 lety

    A friend and I tested the cold water theory. You only have to wait but about a minute. But like
    imadetheurllonger said, it will harden the outer shell but they can still get dented. You can use this technique to get the outer part dry, but I would wait a few more minutes or maybe even 15 mins or more for them to completely dry. I don't know that much about nail polish and such, so this is just a guess.

  • @lanpartyyyy

    I love chinchilly too! and require all other shades of gray from Essie... anyway, it's so funny bc I will always run my hands under cold water after doing my nails (with a top coat though) bc I've noticed it slightly helps.. had no idea it was a "thing". thanks for the video, Ellie!

    • @ellkoNYC
      @ellkoNYC  Před 9 lety

      Beauty Lanparty Right? Grey shades are the best in my book!! Interesting to know that you run them under cold water for a bit and that that helps.. it's definitely more practical than ice water for 3 minutes!! I'll have to try that!! :D

  • @schoardie
    @schoardie Před 9 lety

    I'm not sure, but I think the softener of the polish are water-soluble. So maybe you don't even need the COLD water, but it made it much funnier to watch :D
