How Should We Speak to Our Children About Love, Sex and Relationships?

  • Happy Valentine’s Week to you guys 🥰
Yes, we won’t let Valentine’s Day end just yet before having this talk on love, sex and relationships ...
What is your earliest memory of relationships and sex?
Parents influence their kids’ attitudes about sex and relationships more than they realize. It’s a myth that teenagers want to avoid talking to their parents about sex and dating. Most of them ( and us) are simply curious!
Do you plan on having the talk with your child? When do you think it’s wise to introduce them to this topic?
Share with us in the comments and let’s learn together 👏🏾

I think for me growing up, straight talk did all the work for my parents. I read every straight talk coz my dad was working in the publishing industry, so many books about boys and girls, how HIV is spread, the effects and so on and that kept me in check. Manuela you have a lot of humour, regardless of the topic you are so entertaining. love you ladies

It's really good what you are teaching people... age appropriate information/education. I also think that you should do a program on when to start teaching children that possession over someone is not love it's abuse... or the differences between being able to love someone without being possessive and signs of abuse in a relationship. great job

Mom spoke to me about sex/relationships in fact pregnancy when I was joining boarding school in P6. This is because at the time, a cousin of mine had got pregnant. Mom called me to her room and got real with me. She explained the whole concept of private parts, how women’s parts are different from those of men. Explained sex basically. Told me, your cousin did this and that and that is why she is pregnant. If you let anyone do that to you, you will get pregnant or get HIV. Then of course there were many examples of people dying of HIV and their deaths were really painful.

    Amazing topic ladies.
I got to know about sex education from school ,we used to have teacher counsellors to talk to us. They used to make us watch movies and emphasise the consequences and that really scared the hell out me. *Yellow card* movie

My first visual was an older male relative in the home and the house girl. Damn it. Banaye, the domestic helps are some of the most frequently sexually abused humans( I would like to think)...Infact, several males in the home always slept with those girls. Whether it was consential or forced, I will never know 🤔...Parents, guardians, please watch out. A lot happens in your gated homes. That watchman, shamba boy, older relatives, househelp, name it. Can be a real hazard to your child 🤔

Like Rachel ....am here to learn, I would like my children to learn about sex in a better way than I did. My mum really did her best to scare the living day light out of us when it came to sex but what I remember is that it made me more curios. So I searched and found out quite easily based on the surrounding, the movies, straight talk ....everything. Maybe it helped because I was that girl in school that said NO to guys even when I liked them...in hindsight was it because I was scared or I liked being chased. I hope its not the later because to date.....I love being chased....hahahahahahahahahah Its therapy to me

Mom told me about sex while I was in P.2. We used to live in a strange neighborhood. There was a lot of fornication and we would witness this every time people got drunk. So my mum figured her children might want to attempt so she sat me down and told me about the dangers of sex because sex was so common. We knew what was up at a young age. I was always suspicious of every boy that greeted me.
