I once thought there was a snake in my bedroom, it was terrifying. I could hear it hissing, but couldn't see it anywhere! I remember jumping from my bed to my bathroom, in an attempt to not touch the bedroom floor and get struck - the hissing sounded directly under the bed! The police couldn't find anything, and finally the next day an old man from Animal Control came... He found nothing and looked at me and said, "Ma'am, was your bedroom window open all night?" I told him it was. He replied, "I think you have a barn owl sitting right outside in a tree. They are known to hiss." I've never felt like such an idiot. 😂

There used to be a red whiskered bulbul couple who came to lay eggs on an ornamental hanging light that we had outside near our car porch. They came every breeding season and left when the chicks were big enough to fly. They sometimes reused their old nest by renovating it with dry leaves and sticks. We would stop using that light when the birds came and used it only when they left with their chicks. They didn't really trust people and would try to attack anyone who walked past ( beneath) their precious nest. They have pecked at my grandma several times. It doesn't hurt much. They are very protective of their young. They usually had 2-3 chicks at a time. Once on a stormy night, their nest got detached from the light and fell on the ground. The parent birds made a lot of noise and we came outside to see the broken nest with two eggs completely smashed. The birds were inconsolable. It was a very heart breaking moment for us. They came to lay eggs the next year also. This time one of their hatchlings fell down from the nest but we were able to take it back to its nest before anything dangerous could happen. Luckily the chick wasn't seriously injured.

FYI- If anyone really loves birds and watching them Cornell Ornithological Studies conducts an annual bird count which I participate in every year. It’s very easy to get started, all you have to do is go on their web site and sign up for it. They will send you all the necessary information and paperwork you will need so all you have to do is sit on your porch or watch from a window and count. It helps Cornell keep track of the bird population where you live, to see how healthy certain populations are doing, migration changes, etc.
I highly recommend it to anyone and encourage parents to include their children in the process. It’s not just educational for both adults and kids but also because it’s helping wildlife and those that protect it. BTW, if you’re not very familiar with the birds in your area, I recommend buying a small identification guidebook specifically for your region i.e. Northeast, Southwest, etc. to help lookup any birds you may not know or have never seen before.

Your generation definitely isn't having that. There was no switching, or "giving mama a break." Dad brought home the bacon and protected her and the kids, but she was on house arrest! Bwahahaha. I bet it isn't so supportive in your eyes know!🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🤷🏿‍♂️👍🏿

In 2014 my entry for naming the three barred owls chicks was selected as the winner by the Cornell viewers. Submitted the names Wynken, Blynken and Nod. I had the cam on in my classes so my students (elem.) could see them grow up and got other teachers hooked on watching the owlets. I incorporated owl science in my art lessons for several years in all sorts of media. Barred owls are my favorite of all owls even though they threaten our native owls, the spotted owls. Such beautiful birds.

God makes such beautiful creatures. One of these adults got into my chimney and came down to the fireplace. Birds - wrens and blue jays had often done that; a flashlight beam would show them the way out. The owl was such a surprise! I got a large towel and opened the glass and spread the towel over the owl. A short walk to my back door, stepping into the yard, I held up the towel and let the ends drop and the beautiful creature flew away, to our tall pines - free, again. I hope it enjoyed the brief relationship as much as I did.

I watched these lil owls hatch and grow earlier this year! Boy, did they grow up fast! They were/are so beautiful to watch. I love cams! Was too bad the one owlet kinda “fall”-edged from the nesting box instead of actually fledging, like its sibling. (No worries! The owlet was OK and seen testing its wings later that day)
