    Summary
It's one of them games that really keeps you on your toes. Not only do you have to manage the gathering of the vital resources but you also make the laws of the land such as allowing child labour and many others.
The story unfolds as you discover other settlements and everything usually ends up with you having to make a crucial decision about life or death. Sometimes I had to deny survivors refuge in my city, we just could not spare the food or buildings, I once allowed 34 children to perish in the cold, I felt good :(
The game ran fine but I did read that some slower systems are having a few frame drops so read the specs before you buy.
It's a great City builder/Survival game that is well put together and a joy to play, well worth the £25.

Initially I got this during a Steam sale (how appropriate), and figured it'd be a fun, little casual city builder with pretty visuals. 8 hours later, I realized 11 Bit was dead serious. This is not a game I can just play for a few minutes at a time. When I finally got to The Storm, I was micromanaging every free worker who came out of the infirmaries and on the edge of my seat looking at the razor margin of coal production to expenditure. It's intense.

For those not knowing, try "This War of mine" as well, coming from this developer. Another atmospheric masterpiece. Been waiting for Frostpunk for months now and I have been playing since launch. I have not finished the first mission on normal because of the following reasons: 1. I get banished or 2. I am not satisfied with how the city is late game. It's hard to balance resources/people/ and the temptation to restart the game is HIGH! :). This game is not easy.

Try Banished. It's somewhat of a spiritual successor to this game, but with no research, an endless mode, changing seasons, harder difficulty, larger maps, no real story and much lower hardware requirements. Great game, I enjoyed it a lot, but it's a very different beast than Frostpunk. Banished is a slow burn of dread, Frostpunk on the other hand is a quick, dynamic experience that keeps you glued to the screen.
During one session of Banished, I had a wonderfully working little settlement, every kid was at school, farms and orchards were producing more food than my people could eat, trade was flourishing, I even had some livestock. Then the storm came, tornadoes. They destroyed the orchards and most fields, killed the animals, destroyed every last bit of food, tools and clothing I had in storage buildings - and they hit the school, killing every single child in town.
People were homeless, childless, had no food, no tools, no source of food. What saved me was one tiny detail: Just before the storm came, I had transferred a large amount of fruits from the orchards to the trade post. That's the one place that survived and this fruit fed the survivors, allowing them to carry on. Winters were merciless without clothes, work was slow without tools, it took years until food production was going again and slowly, the settlement recovered. It never reached its old numbers again however, its previous wealth. An entire generation had been wiped out, people grew old and died while few kids were born. The village soldiered on, but it stagnated, barely got by. I did however manage to keep almost everyone who survived the storm alive until they died of old age, that's what I'm most proud of.

I beat it my first try with 600+ people. Went full on religious at the end, though I didn't need to, its pretty easy to spam religious building's special abilities to take care of public opinion. The thing that got me was it didn't tell you you couldn't produce food during the storm. I figured hunters might not be able to range, but your steam powered green houses totally shouldn't have stopped working for no reason. It didn't matter in the end though, my people survived without any food for like 6/7 days straight. It was kinda stupid, I was waiting for a cannibalism choice, but it never came to that. My city survived with 500 people starving and 300 sick, but it never really went over the edge to massive death I thought it would have. I didn't have a single death in the storm thanks to 100% housing, it was almost too easy!
Sorry for the gameplay recap, I just finished and am pretty excited...

Played this game and definitely agree. Play hours are limited but the game has a certain quality and detail to it which I absolutely loved. Besides you can try different approaches and different difficulties.
Would have like if they had some sort of randomiser that offered generated objectives/map layouts/etc. Personally I would have loved a little bit of combat in the mix as well. Still, good game.

I think it is a great game and I do recommend it to people , however there was 2 points I was hoping for you to mention on your review :
    * since release there was a bug with the outpost that sends 'Cores' ... as much as I know this bug wasn't fixed even after a few patches - really bothered me when I played the game.
    * The replay-ability is very limited on this game. Yes the details and story on what is available is terrific 9/10 but replay-ability is around 5/10 because after you bit the scenarios ... that's it game is done. Now they are about to release the unlimited mods which would boost the replay-ability to 7/10 ... for me to reach the higher scores on this scales you need multiplayer - which doesn't seem to be arriving in anytime in the future.
Otherwise the attention for details , accessibility, UI, design , visuals , gameplay, sounds, voices and about everything else in this game is increadible !

It has very good replayability value per campaign, you can try to get the achievements, amp the difficulty, change the strategy and the ethics tree...

Fantastic game! Definitely worth a buy. I've recently bought a lot of games that bore me after an hour. This game sucked me in and I can't wait to play it again.

It may be saved by the fact there are free expansions in the works otherwise there's little replayability.

Same eerie feel to it. I didn't even read about it before playing and the first thing i thought was - "Damn this is in some ways similar to this war of mine".

As the others said, it's a very different game but very similar, dark, grim situation where every single day feels like it could genuinely be the last for your people. You have to make very hard decisions at times which the people may hate you for, but ultimately you may not have any choice to avoid certain doom. I've played through all 3 of the currently available campaigns and loved them to bits. There's a 4th campaign still being developed, and as far as I'm aware it's at no additional cost. Very good value game and one you don't want to miss, especially if you enjoyed This War of Mine.

Those damn Londoners always stirring the pot! The thing that makes no sense in this game is as you research stuff the consumption is doubled each time you use it. For example if you are researching the heating upgrade the consumption for using it becomes twice what it was when you were using Steam level 1. Isn't researching stuff supposed to make it more efficient rather than wiping you out?

What irritates me is that the game judges you no matter what you do. For example I was playing on medium difficulty and put children to work only safe jobs, employed them at cook houses exclusively, didn’t go the faith route but the order route. And I was strict but fair, gave days off to workers, tried to be benevolent on the whole.
In the end when about 600 people survived the game gave me the same judging montage that I got playing on hard difficulty when about 350 survived and employed kids on all jobs.
But hard difficulty really tests your drive to survive at all costs and medium is just lax working hours. But still the game chooses to judge you - it’s like that was the developers’ goal to judge the player irrespective of how hard he was on the population.
