Senior reporter Geraint Hughes explains Project ACL, a three-year project launched to investigate the concerning number of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in women's football.
Players' union FIFPRO have joined forces with the Professional Footballers Association (PFA), Nike and Leeds Beckett University to launch 'Project ACL' with the view of "increasing player availability by reducing ACL injuries".

No need for a study when you can implement the following now and the number of ACL’s will decrease dramatically. 1) Nike and Adidas just need to join Puma in making female specific boots specifically designed for a women’s foot. 2) Playing in proper stadiums on proper state of the art pitches. 3) Specific training designed for female athletes. 4) Having the proper state of the art training facilities with all the recovery, health and training infrastructures. 5) FIFA, The Continental Confederations and Domestic FA’s to sort out the playing schedule. For example in Europe, none of the players at the highest level have had a break since 2021 and won’t get a break until 2026.

What is the need for female specific boots, what’s the difference? Genuinely interested thanks

I think is playing schedule. Frequency of play. At the youth level, it's tournaments. I would study the recent minutes played before injury. You have to be able to accept that the prescription might mean you differentiate rules between women and men, which might effect revenues and spending. So, you have to be willing to sacrifice your political stand to protect the players and thier long-term careers.

I suspect it's very difficult to fix this problem.
Men and women are biologically different and I suspect with womens muscle mass, skeletal structure being weaker than mens means their bodies are put under more strain from the rigourous movements involved in elite level sport and therefore they are more prone to injury.

    The truth is in biology.
It would take generations upon generations to have female genes to adapt to this stress.
From the boots they wear, to the minutes they complete per season, the amount of training, maybe even the size of the pitch, the size of the ball perhaps.
It was always difficult to overlay the men's game into the women's.

      Couldn't agree more with this.
I would like to see less minutes match day (35 mins each half) and more recovery time between games (6-7 days). The others you have mentioned such as pitch and ball size and training sessions are definitely something to look into too.
If they factor all this in and implement the changes, I would bet my life we'd see less injuries, especially ACL injuries.

@@user-zr2ug4rh7wI used to think pitch, goal, ball size should change but then I realised 1900 or so women’s height now is almost what a man was then. Women are closer to the delineations first introduced than the current men are. Not that means it shouldn’t change but interesting
