As a Mariposa County resident, this section of Hwy 49 is, by far, the easiest to drive. The worst section is Bagby Grade in the north part of the county (not even the locals will drive it). A few other points of interest: that first grade coming out of Madera County is called Miami Mt grade (there is a fire watch tower on top) and the William Sell Bridge that crosses the Chowchilla River, the 2nd grade is called Woodland Grade, and the 3rd grade before town is called Spring Hill.
Also, coming down Miami Mt Grade at 5:15, that tall mountain in the background is called Buckingham Mountain and is used as a geographic point in the county (it was burnt to a crisp last summer in the Oak Fire, that actually came within a mile of my home and neighborhood, and thankfully survived).

I visited Oakhurst for the first time a few months ago with a group I was amazed how beautiful and all the panoramic views catches my attention. What a place!

Having been born and raised in Oakhurst this video title sure caught my eye. Last place we lived was out on Hwy 49 right about at the 1:28 mark on the vid. Right where that pickup and trailer are pulled over to the side of the road. I used to drive this route everyday going to work in Mariposa. Very nice country. I spent my first ten years living on the sawmill in Oakhurst, it was located on what is now the Von's Market shopping center. We lived in mill housing on the mill site. Great way for kids to grow up. The school bus would enter the mill site and go right up to the housing area. The houses all surrounded this gully filled with pine trees and that is where we spent our afternoons playing to our heart's content.
Nippanawassi and Ahwahnee were burned out in a 1961 conflagration fire known as the Harlow Canyon Fire. Historical vid link on that story below. That fire created its own fire storm and set a speed record for fire travel that stands to this day. It wasn't the largest fire for sure, but the amount of time it traveled from that highway pass just beyond Nipp to Ahwahnee was just a matter of a few very short minutes followed by the fire's accent up Deadwood Mountain in Oakhurst. It was stunningly fast and a scary thing to witness.
Left Oakhurst in 1993 and moved out of state. CA was just becoming too *CA* for us. That whole Golden Chain area was great up through the 80's. Good vid.......thanks for sharing.

I watched that video of the infamous Harlow Fire a few yrs ago, and you can't make those stories up. The amount of time the fire took to go from Miami Mt to Deadwood was insane.

@@grizzfan08 Yup.......my dad was the GM on the mill. He was down on the mill site the full run of the fire trying to get it away from the mill. Had hose dry stacks of lumber ignited all of Oakhurst would have been a smoldering mess. By that time we lived up Rd 425B. We stood out the back door and watched that explosion of fire take off up Deadwood. That's when we evacuated to Fresno and stayed there for 2 days. Crazy fast fire.........I'm an old retired guy now but to this day when I see an out-of-control fire I get that sick feeling in my gut.

@@milesdee1806 We've had several in the past 5 yrs that have done pretty significant damage. The Oak Fire last year was a real winner and a half.

Love the videos of CA 49 you did 3 years ago. I'm wondering if you're planning on showcasing the entire length of the highway including the northern end at CA 70?

I’m eventually redoing all the videos on Highway 49 including the ones with copyrighted music. Two of the videos are already on CZcams and we’re released earlier this year. They will cover the entire length of the highway!
