  • In this video, I will show you the process of updating the firmware of your Montana 700, 700i or 750i using your smartphone and Garmin connect instead of using a desktop computer, Garmin Express and a USB cable. Note that I think that this method won’t apply when updating the TopoActive maps as they tend to be above 3GB in size, so you may want to check every six months on your desktop in Garmin Express if there’s that type of update.
Note that the process is similar when you are using Garmin Express EXCEPT for the prompt to unplug the USB cable and restart your device. Meaning that you won't know if you have new software/firmware on your device until you restart your device and notice when the device boots up it will stick on the label "CHECK FOR NEW SW" meaning you will get the new software update screens.
If you tap NO on the install new software screen, you can still use the device using the old firmware/ You will get this screen each time you start up.
If you tap YES, then the software loader will load and you'll eventually see the map/main menu once done.
To verify the firmware version you just need to go to SETUP | ABOUT 🛰️Shop Recommended Garmin Products 🛰️

Hi all I have upgraded my GPS from the Montana 680t to this new 700 and I run a SD card map from Garmin . My problem is the card runs in the 680 t no problem but when I put it in the 700 it saying see seller I have contacted Garmin but they aren’t helping. Would this be a software issue????

I upgraded from a 680t and also had the same problem... something to do with the discovery map version. Had to buy new version. Not cheap... this was last year so maybe somebody knows a way round now 🤷‍♂️

Huh, first time I’ve heard of that. That is not « cool » that you have to buy the same map twice cause of the upgrade. Which map product was it?

Well I bit the bullet and did the same . I use the Asian map a lot as I’m in Indonesia but I’m based in Australia so I thought that I could put my card into the 700 but no ..... The feed back from Garmin Australia is no help they want me to try another card in the 700 as the card reader might be faulty . Well I’m not going to buy another card just to check it out .

Can map data be updated this way?

No, I found you need to plug it in and update via Garmin express
