  • Lets take a look on how the Garmin Montana 700 GPS series handles tracks and activities! One important message: I am saying in the video that the unit can not use TRACK files for turn-by-turn navigation, but of course it can do turn-by-turn navigation following routes or to waypoints and points of interest! Video is following!

Thanks the video was very helpful. Regarding: recording options>auto start> on or off. If "on" the device will continuously record whatever it is seeing even if there is no movement or activity (as in the video u made), if u save the activity, the device just immediately starts running again in a new activity without being prompted to start. If u choose "off" on this option, once u pause the activity and record the activity, the device does not begin recording til u tell it to begin by hitting the "play arrow" (right facing arrow) in the recording controls window. So, for instance, If i start an activity, but had the device in auto start off, i wouldnt have any activity recorded until i remembered to go into the device and start the recording. I like to keep it in auto start on and just clear the device of any unwanted activity before i start an activity I want to record. I suppose u could do it the other way as well, but I think most people expect a gps to just automatically start leaving a "crumbtrail" when they start moving. So with this switch u have the option. I've probably just confused anyone who read this.Sorry.

Great video and very helpful. I believe the profiles can be set as you wish and any changes made in a profile only work in that profile e.g. type of routing, backlight time-out for example, and loads of other settings, so you can have specific settings to suit you and your chosen profile - so when you switch to that profile the settings are automatically loaded as you made them. Thanks for the video!

Yes and no! There are settings for different ACTIVITIES in the track settings (which I have not understood) and there are PROFILES in the main settings. You are right, the profiles have each their own set of parameters, e g which map is used and how the display should look like. Very useful! Those profiles have nothing to do with the activities! If I am changing in one activity some setting, it changes also in the other activities!
I will need to do another video on profiles! ;-)

Thank you for the video! Sounds like we have a few things in common: geocaching, motorcycling, and compulsive about playing with GPS. I like your distinction about activities storing more information (sensors, etc.) and tracks storing just points. It's not clear if the GPS can be set to NOT record activities and ONLY record tracks, and record the tracks ONLY as GPX files. I'll have to review your video again, but it looked like you always have to record activities and then save the activity as a track if you want a track in GPX format.
Do you know much about expedition mode? I couldn't find settings to control how frequently points are saved. I'm going on a cruise and want to record the track, but at the slow speed of the ship, probably 5 minutes or so would be fine. Even if I can't set the frequency, I'd like to at least know what the sample frequency is.
    Thanks again!

there is a major flaw!! just took me 2 hours to figure it out. You cannot name a track if you stop recording, then hit file save, it automatically saves it to their number,. now... what you need to remember is while its recording, DO NOT HIT STOP, just hit the file save, now you have the option to name it, and then will export to recorded activities. Need to call garmin and have this issue fixed!

Activity Type is just for reference in Garmin Connect, makes no change to how the device operates or records data!

Does the 700 orientate itself/the map while cycling so that the direction you going in is ALWAYS at the top of the screen? Also, if you follow a preplanner track, say downloaded from KAMOOT, does it show if you are left or right from track>

Hello, thank you for great video. I'm planing to buy this device. But I can't find accurate info in my question, about live tracking.
Can another person directly see where I am in computer? Can he track my position if I ride with the bike?

Tanks for the positive feedback. I have not really looked at the inReach features in detail, really need to do that. What I have tried is send a message from the device, e g to my sister. This works. I can also sent information to e g an email address that will contain a link to my Garmin Explore webpage where someone can follow my path, if tracking is activated on the GPS. I can also send my current position via in reach satellite to a phone number or email address.
For all those functions you are going to need a subscription. Garmin offers different plans for that, depending on your need for data amount and tracking resolution. Check you local Garmin webpage for that, prices vary from country to country. For me the satellite based SOS function was the main reason to buy the 700i. The 700i also comes with the City Navigator Maps (Lifetime update included), so the premium price over the 700 is very much worth it.
Time for another video, once I have had time to check out all those functions more in detail! ;-)

Great. You are such a good teacher. I don't find Basecamp the easiest piece of software to use and I am not keen on Garmin's mapping either as it is too Mickey Mouse for me. I find using OS, IGN, OSM or other detailed maps far better. I have a much older and smaller Garmin Edge 1000 unit for cycling. I was going to get a Montana instead but only because of it's large screen but didn't. This newer version seems a lot better although you say it possibly cannot do turn by turn navigation which is a bit rubbish compared to say Google maps on a smart phone. Routes and routing would be a good one to cover and what the device does if you chose to go a different route whilst following a route. How does it adapt your new track/route. Does it for instance keep telling you to turn around and go back or plot a route going back to a previous way point? Anyway thank you very much. A++++

Thanks for your kind words, great if you like my videos! Just to put one thing right, which I did not point out clearly enough: the unit cannot provide turn by turn navigation based on a (imported or saved) track file! It will do that however based on routes imported from basecamp or built in the unit itself, or simply to a choosen adress, waypoint or similar! That’s worth another video! ;-)

Hello, Thanks for your video ! I just have a little question, you show how to "show on the map" the track, but there is also an option "go". Just want make sure if you click on it, the track will be showed on the screen with a width path right ? (like the old montana)
because i had the Zumo XT, but he don't have this feature, so i already sell back. Just want be sure the new Montana have it, otherwise i'll buy a old montana ! Thanks a lot !
