Turn gauge on first, then turn off water supply.

Water can cool down in the water heater expansion tank also letting the pressure gauge drop. This is normal ok stuff.

Do we need to make sure the water heater is completely cool? My plumbing is dropping about 1psi every 10 mins. I’m suspecting it’s because the hot water is cooling just like how it can expand when heated up.

1 psi in 10 min. Is usually something trivial like a really slow faucet drip. If u suspect thermal expansion, turn the heater off at the gas or electric. Displace the hot water by running hot water through the bathtubs then do the test. Also, if your hose bibbs have vacuum breakers, the test is worthless

If you test the outside hose Bibb, it is always going to be on the cold side, because hose Bibbs are not piped with hot water.

i did this. i wonder why the pressure drops so fast BUT the water meter is not spinning. even overnight as long as nobody opens any faucet the water meter remains the same.

My city water meter is 500 feet from the house. I think there is a leak in the line underground!. HF. The ground is damp in the whole area so it's hard to detect a wet spot,, because of small underground springs. I'm nearly twenty miles from town, and yes, it is city water. When I turn the outside hose on there is a decent pressure for about 2 seconds then dies down to hardly any pressure. Anybody have any ideas! 😳Thanks. PS I am going to call the water board for this precinct. Maybe they'll send a guy out and check pressure leaks at the meter!
