    You guys are awesome! I had a leak detection guy come out and he said it's a slow leak which makes it harder to find. He used an infrared tool to find the hot spots but there were none. He ended up referring me to another plumber but at least he didn't charge me anything. Of course it's Friday and I can't get any plumbers to come out until Monday. So I watched your video and isolated the leak to my water heater Yay! At least I can save my plumber the trouble and have him focus on that. It may not sound like much to someone else who's more familiar with plumbing, but for someone who lives by herself with family thousands of miles away, your video was a God send. You made my day, Thank you!

    Ok ,I thought you were going to show me how to find a leak..I get the isolation part..what you didn't say,is that since its on the hot water side,that you could rent a pipe locator, hook on to the hot water side..locate the line,,then possibly,,use a temp gun that might show you a hot spot in the floor..if you find it..then use a listening device ..to possibly hear the leak..if that don't work ,introduce air in to the line,,which will help identify a leak location better...those are some of the steps...these guys are correct,,but that was no help..

    Some people are wondering, why the video doesn't show you "where" the leak is.You might have to explain to them what the title is actually stating.

    Hot water side wouldn't go under the slab normally. That's where the cold water line would come into the house from the outside main
    Typically the hot water goes overhead and through wood flooring and walls that are insulated. Coldwater leak is made harder to find because it's outside usually along driveway or underneath where it come through the car port or garage.

    I wish I knew 1/2 as much as you do. You guys are "AWESOME" Love your videos. We have a single family home with only 18 inches of crawl space. My wife passed and I am left with SS, only. .Wooden frame home and 71 years old, just like me.I am a diy person and cannot afford a plumber.The only shut off valve is the one at the meter outside our property About 3 feet. The water company notified me of a leak which incurred a $571.00 water bill.Obviously after the water bill went up but, not sooner. So, if I leave the main open and shut the water valve off at the heater and it stops then, it's the hot water pipe!? Right? If it still keeps running then, it's the cold water pipe!? I hope I have this right.
    GOD bless and I thank both of you from the bottom of my heart.

    I’m confused as to how it was inferred that the leak was in the slab? Isn’t a slab leak in reference to a leak found beneath the slab foundation of the home? If so, most construction in Northern Virginia doesn’t seem to result in the hot side of the water heater passing through beneath the slab. If anything, would the hot water supply piping be traversing through the actual home to terminate at the bathroom sinks, shower faucets, and/or other hot water fixtures? How is it inferred that the leak is beneath the slab foundation? I’m curious since I used your very same thought process to troubleshoot a very small leak detected by the Flo by Moen WiFi leak detection device I installed. I shut off all the angle valves and other supply water to sinks, toilets, and kitchen sink. Leak was still detected. Then proceeded to cut off the hot water supply of the water heater. It was then that I isolated the leak since the Flo by Moen no longer reported the small leak it had been detecting. That said, now it is up to me to find that small leak somewhere in the numerous copper joints that are between the hot side shut-off valve of the water heater to the respective hot water side of the various fixtures that use that hot water for domestic use. So I’m confused how such a situation would result in concluding that a slab leak is present. Please let me know your thoughts as I am about to tear through drywall next!

    • @PetertheGreatest1
      @PetertheGreatest1 Před 2 lety

      When you turned off the hot water heater, the leak stopped. Now you know that the leak is on a hot water pipe. If there is no water soaking through the walls and onto the floor, then the leak must be below the floor. If your house has a crawl space, go in there and find it. If your house is on a slab, you need additional equipment and know-how to find where it is.

    I found my hot water side, concrete slab leak with the following procedure:
    1) I shut off my hot water heater's outlet valve.
    2) I turned on my water heater so that it would heat the water for at least an hour. I also used my bare hands to feel the heat in the outlet side of the water heater. I wanted to feel a cold pipe on the downstream side of the valve.
    4) I then opened the outlet side of the water heater valve & put my hand on the pipe. I could feel the pipe getting hotter and hotter along the downstream side of the valve, and knew that this hot temperature indicated that the hot water was flowing down that pipe, and had to be leaking under the slab (can't have it getting hot unless the water is flowing out somewhere).
    5) The next thing I did was to shut off the hot water & disconnect the line and install a plug. I can use the second bathroom until I get this fixed.
    I wish to add that I could hear what sounded like water running through the pipes for several days before I eventually found the problem.

    this does not tell me any thing,,,the real problem is to find where under the slab is the exact location of the leak,so,your tips sounded good,but really have no impact on the location of the leak or the cost for a company to come and make the detection of the exact place where the leaks is.

    • @neilwilliams8608

      All they are doing is trying to let you know what pipe is leaking. Hot or cold. At least this way you have narrowed it down a lot. You need to pay attention to what they are saying and showing you.No where in the video do they say, this will tell you where the leak is.

    I don't understand. In my opinion when you shut off that water heater valve, in case there is a leak on hot side of the system, the needle should be moving. Anyway it is a great instructional video.

    • @TwinHomeExperts
      @TwinHomeExperts  Před 7 lety +3

      Thanks for your feedback .
      When you shut down each step of the isolation valves ,this ONLY determines to which side its on .So if the needle stops spinning when you shut the valve off at the hot water ,then that verify the leaks only on the hot water side.
      Hope i didn't confuse you more.;)

    Every plumbing problem I have is 100 times more difficult than any of these CZcams examples. Here's what I will be dealing with in looking for the leak under the "slab".... The water main goes across the lawn and under a concrete slab for 10 feet. It then turns right under the concrete porch that is apx. 16 inches thick, from there it goes under the fire place brick..... what was that the guys were saying about using a listening device & drilling down into concrete. Try drilling down through concrete brick, and/or an 18" thick concrete porch. I'm about ready to re route the entire line around to the back of the house and say screw this finding a leak. Also, the loudest place my leak is at is.... under the house at a location where I would need to crawl 20 feet with 1.5 foot clearance to do so... and the leak is probably accessible while laying on your side, and how are you going to repair that when you are crawling around under a house, and what was that about using locating devices? It will be impossible to do anything to the pipes even if I did know where the leak was. Oh, I guess I could tear out the wood flooring, and the sub flooring... ever tried to take apart a hard wood floor?
