We believe in free speech. Except for that one thing, and that other thing. And all that other stuff.
Defending "free speech" is not about protecting speech you're comfortable with, but for speech that is uncomfortable or offensive to the majority viewpoints, regardless of your political or cultural background.
Even if Joe Biden said you're a SOB, that is still free speech and should be defended. The same applies to Trump.

I’m confused. So more then half of students agree on restricting racial slurs….but are totally fine with confederate flags in campuses. So do they really care about racism or are they just saying that?

Incorrect. All speech should stay untouched. Just look at the countries that have speech regulations. It doesn’t stop at one type of speech. It never will, especially when the government says they are here to help. Think about it.

Free speech only has consequences because someone gets offended that is relative to the individual. The consequence has nothing to do with the speech it honestly has to do with self-esteem. Something that I could say to you could be insulting but to someone else it wouldn't.
