Before the 2009-10 season, the Montreal Canadiens were in search of a new head coach. Like this year, there were Adams Trophy winners available. GM Bob Gainey had a very specific candidate in mind- Jacques Martin- who had been a successful coach and had already moved on and become a GM. To do that, Gainey must have had a a very specific style and objective..Habs went to conference final that year, playing an extremely unorthodox style, upsetting the President's Trophy and defending Stanley Cup winners...I bring that up because I think the ideal candidate for the Leafs is also currently a GM - Barry Trotz...Barry took a highly skilled team with a record of playoff failures, and turned them into a champion. The mistakes of the Capitals and Leafs are so similar - as Alex Ovechkin pointed out about 5 years ago. Trotz is the best man for the job. Now, he may not want to touch that job with a pole. But to not even ask Trotz shows ineptitude yet again on behalf of Leafs management.
He’s where he wants to be, and we don’t know if they’re not asking. But you’re likely right.
@@samuelkobe Likely right that Trotz is the best choice, you mean? We don't know that the Leafs are not asking Nashville for permission to talk to him, true. But we knew the Devils asked permission to talk to Keefe right away, we knew the Penguins were talking to Dubas last year - why would there be secrecy if they are asking permission to talk to Trotz? Because they are likely not asking.
The Leafs need a complete overhaul coaching staff wise

One thing I don’t understand about Marner not waiving his NMC is how does that help him?
Here is my thinking:
Playing the last year of his contract on a team that does not have him in their long-term plans cannot be a positive for his next contract. He will most likely have a smaller role on the team (e.g., not playing with Matthews, being moved to PP2, etc) and that will diminish the AAV on his next deal. We all know he wants ridiculous money, which he will not be getting here), so there is no path forward. I think Tavares is more likely to stay because he knows he is not getting a huge new deal.

How does leaving likely the most lucrative and points’ inflating set of conditions for a winger in the entire league, help him either?
Does any other winger in the league enjoy the totality of all these special conditions:?
-Plays almost exclusively with the greatest goal scorer in the world, when not, he’s with other 40+ goal scorers.
-Gift wrapped the most ice time of all forwards on team, regardless of times of lackluster play. Always premium minutes for points.
-Never has to drive his own line
-Excused from having to get “his hands dirty” with any physical with opponents.
-Doesn’t have to play the tough, playoff style brand of hockey. He’s too skilled for chipping it in and battling on the forecheck on the boards.
-A winger who’s not a goal scorer, but a setup/assist guy who doesn’t have the responsibilities of setup/assist forwards as they are typically centers.
All of these very unique and special privileges/circumstances result in overinflated points and it skews perception of him. Who know by how much, we’ll find out I’m sure.
Marner’s value is sure to decrease once he’s moved and loses his lucrative, special privileges.
Marner is high end, soft skill. A 9.5M regular season player, and a 3.5M postseason player.

Coach Q is a major upgrade from Shedon Keefe, im just not positive that he would be the best coach for the Leafs current situation. Remember, the Blackhawks had a complete roster by the time they hired Q. Just something to think about...i seriously hope Toronto can get this hire right

Marner will NEVER be the key peice on a Cup team .here in Toronto or anywhere else .We have already seen that the last 8 years ,he does not have that playoff pedgigree and he is too soft for playoff style hockey .He may come back to TO with a cup party ,but he wont be one of the key peices on that Cup team

Quennville is the best choice. Played for Leafs (knows the market) and has proven track record with several cups/managing stars. He did not commit a crime and should be permitted to pursue his passion for coaching if that's what he chooses. But... Bettman (and his bosses/the owners) and quite likley MLSE won't want to stir a hornets nest with the members of the public who lean a certain direction against Quennville so forget about it. Too bad.
He openly admitted in court documents that he was aware of the sexual assault and did nothing about it. The NHL isn’t allowing him back in the NHL for a reason lol
