      The problem with the ruger carbine is the barrel is way too long IMHO for the round. The whole point of the 5.7 is it’s great with great velocity out of a short barrel. I’d ruger comes out with one in a shorter barrel, I’d buy it and use it as a cheek pistol.

  • @bobbyricigliano2799
    @bobbyricigliano2799 Před rokem +27

    I own a Ruger 57 and I like everything about it except the magazines. After about the 10th round, the follower doesn't move freely and the rounds tilt forward and backward. Every magazine (about 10) behaved this way. This results in a lot of cartridge movement, including bullet tips nosediving into the front wall of the magazine. This problem got worse as spring tension increased closer to capacity.
    Normally I would put several hundred rounds through the gun before even contacting the MFG. But the 5.7 rounds are more than $1 each so I sent the mags to Ruger before firing a single shot. They were great about accepting and inspecting the magazines. I believe they replaced the followers and springs, and returned them to me quickly. A++ customer service. But the magazines behaved the same way when I got them back.
    I took the pistol along with a mix of FN blue tip, American Eagle FMJ, and some frangible rounds to the range. Out of about 120 rounds, I had exactly zero malfunctions. I mixed the ammo types, topped some mags off, loaded only a few in others, and the gun cycled perfectly. At 25 yards, it was very easy to keep everything in the 9-10 rings, but the holes were so small that I couldn't tell without retracting the targets back to me. Other than being loud, the pistol has barely any recoil and is a pleasure to shoot. I still don't like the magazines, and I think they could have been designed better, but the pistol is a champ.
    Now if we could get 5.7 ammo prices down a bit.......

Started to get interested in 5.7 when Ruger dropped the new carbine. Now, even more so knowing the PSA mags will run it. Something to consider if 5.7 ammo continues to drop in price and get improvements through competition between manufacturers.

    Just ordered a Rock 57 with a threaded barrel to try it out. I wanted something to throw a suppressor on. Didn't want to thread my PS90 due to the collectible nature. I was looking into a Keltec, but this Rock just came at a discounted price whereas Keltec P50 was overpriced everywhere. It was a great hassle and a lot more cost to thread the Ruger due to its thin profile. You have to thread the barrel to a different pitch, add an adapter, then add the can. The thicker PSA barrel just made them easier to directly thread onto the barrel itself. Save the adapter and the possibility of issues with concentricity.
    Also, my last Ruger 57 was very inaccurate. I got much worse accuracy out of it (shooting the 197 blue box 5.7), both using iron and red dot, compared to my M&P9 on the same day. I spoke to Ruger person and was told to send it back for repair. But I just sent it back because I'm so tired of wasting this expensive ammo.
    I hope the Rock gives me a different experience.
    My question is, which one is closer to the FN57 in terms of structure, size, and holster compatibility? I know the Ruger will fit into the same holster as FN57, how about the Rock? will they fit in the same FN holster, or will they fit into a Glock holster since it looks more square-shaped like Glock?

    IMO the trigger I like the Rock the best as is from the factory. Then the FN FSN, and then the Ruger. The Ruger's trigger has that mushy DA like pull you show. Aftermarket shoe offerings for the FSN do add some better trigger options for the FSN, but that short reset on the Rock is hard to beat.

    The cutout on the Ruger slide is just a lint trap, for people who plan on actually carrying this every day I would not want a cut out slide. The other thing to consider if you are a hand loader is that this cartridge requires a special coating on the case for it to feed and eject properly (I think more so for ejection purposes) and you have to wash them carefully and inspect the coating or you will get stuck cases, kind of a PITA to reload and expensive to buy all factory loads so this is a huge negative for any gun chambered in this round, that was the deal breaker for me.

    • @davidgoodnow269
      @davidgoodnow269 Před rokem

      Not to mention the staked primers to handle the high pressure! Common in military ammunition for a century, you simply _cannot_ stake primers in reloaded cases. This is why the best handloads for 5.7 FN start with pulling the bullet from American Eagle budget factory loads, and replacing the powder.
      Actual military 5.7 FN is loaded optimized for a 10.5" barrel with an armor-piercing bullet--originally, a plastic-cored 28-grain with a copper-over-steel design getting 2,800 fps--designed to shoot flat and accurately, penetrate body armor or a helmet, and then dump all its energy quickly to maximize shock. Also, the low sectional density was advertised as reducing risk from stay bullets in an urban environment. Kills with body shots out to 200 meters, head shots through steel or kevlar helmets out to 300 meters, with the accuracy to do that; drops to the ground completely spent at 600 yards instead of (potentially) miles.
      Commercial civilian-sale 5.7 FN ammo is jinxed, since it cannot over-pressure the direct-blowback carbine action despite having an extra eleven inches of barrel to burn powder in versus the five-inch pistols; the pistols have to work with ammo loaded with gunpowder with a burn-rate suitable to a carbine!
      Get a heavier recoil-spring and some _very_ fast-burning powder, load with rifle bullets designed for .223 varminting (expands and mushrooms, rather than fragmenting, at the lower pistol velocity, where a 45-grain varmint bullet designed for .22 Bee or Hornet is likely to come fragment--same 2200-2400 velocity range), or make your own bullets with a swage for your loading press and some .22 LR cases.

  • @scottlawson9206
    @scottlawson9206 Před rokem +9

    VERY nice comparison between the two pistols! Honestly it's worth getting both (although, I'm a bit perplexed why you didn't opt for the PSA version with the slide optics cut). For those considering attaching a suppressor, the PSA is available with the slide already cut for optics (it comes with two adapter plates for different footprints, the slide is cut for direct-mounting of Shield RMS/SMS footprint plus it comes with a blank-off plate) and a threaded barrel. At the time of this comment Ruger doesn't offer the pistol with a threaded barrel already installed but they do offer a threaded barrel on their website. Note: the threaded PSA barrel is 1/2x28 while the thinner Ruger barrel is threaded M10x1 and comes with an adapter for 1/2x28.
    There are a couple of suppressors which are specifically designed for the FN Five Seven pistol which also uses the M10x1 thread, so it's possible to purchase a suppressor in that thread without any additional adapters. Oh, and the striker-fired system has been proven well over 40 years- Heinrich Ortgies introduced a pistol in three different calibers around 1920, and the Baby Browning soon followed it (also striker-fired), among many others. Despite what many believe, Glock didn't come up with the idea (nor are they the first to use polymer frames- that milestone goes to HK).
