This was Joe Cockers last concert (Hence the name nearly unplugged) and I also believe the best performance he ever made of this song
What is a amazing at the end is the crowd didn't come in clapping and screaming, the music was playing, and you could hear a pin drop until it was completely finished. They wanted to FEEL the experience of this song , hold on to that moment.
You're not the only one. I'm totally obsessed with Joe Cocker too. Him and Jeff Buckley, to me, are on a different level as far as genuine emotive singing. Others don't even come close. Good artists sing the words. Great artists sing the feelings behind the words.

He had such a command of the stage. Unique vocal talent. Puts his heart into the song

I am totally jealous
I was 3 years old when Joe Cocker released his version of the song in late 1974 and it got played a lot throughout the 1970's. It then kept getting covered over and over by various artists and made its way into various television show & movie soundtracks, so it just never seems to go away or get old. Billy Preston and Bruce Fisher created a terrific song, and Dennis Wilson's hand can definitely be heard in certain parts of the song applying the finishing touches. Regardless, the song was Billy Preston's baby even though others collaborated. Just a truly beautiful song, and Joe Cocker clearly sings from his soul in covering it.
A fun version of this song is when Billy Preston, Joe Cocker, and Patti LaBelle performed it live, together, at the Apollo Theatre.
