      If they have a lawyer involved, sent surveyors out and had all the proper paperwork why would you assume its shady right away? People get desperate especially when banks are refusing to do business with small businesses that want to upgrade or expand their own business. I will agree they should have used more caution but as you can see there was no red flags until the closings kept getting pushed back.

    It's generally standard practice for legitimate law firms to photocopy two pieces of ID, one being a person's driver's license, and attach to the client file because people often try to use law firms for scams. I know when a law firm is audited by their Law Society governing them, they can be held responsible for being part of the crime, and sued by the victims.

    Ironically, despite the high dollar amounts and the sophistication of those being duped, this is very similar to the cashier's check scams, pay for a job scams, etc. often perpetrated at smaller amounts against lower-economic-class people. The points and fees come OUT of the loan! You don't pay for them in advance. Gee.
