Eric Johnson is a solid top-4 defenseman for the Avalanche. Somewhat disappointing but hardly a "bust". At this point in his career he is what he is.
He also won the stanley cup with the avs last year

Putting him at #3 simply because of other guys drafted after him ended up having just as good if not better careers than him is nonsense. He was head & shoulders the best player to draft that year, & he’s had a very good career. Him at #3 is a joke. Dipietro should be there.

Corner stone of the avs defence for years and an eventual veteran presence on the blue line for them plus being a big part of that 2022 cup winning team. Considering the guys taken after him it’s definitely disappointing but he’s not a bust by far.

Look who’s after in their respective drafts. Yakupov’s draft was shit, no one in the top 5 would’ve been a great pick. As for Johnson...J.Staal, Toews, Backstrom and Kessel went 2-5. Clearly worse considering what you could end up with.

Erik Johnson should not have been on this list. He is actually having a successful NHL career. No one can say the same about the other 9 players on this list
Compared to his draft class he isn’t a no 1 pick. Which was what the list was. Top 10 worst nhl draft picks. Had he been drafted later say in the 10-20 maybe even 6-10 but there was much better players. I will say this as a pens fan I’m still pissed at Patrick for drafting Stall. Passing Toews was an awful choice as we have seen. Craig Patrick said he would draft the best player no matter what the position. Yet Stall turned into a bust and was traded away for basically nothing.
@@face76 In what world is EJ worse than André Veilleux. Veilleux was selected first overall and didn't even play a single game. Also wtf are you smoking thinking that you guys got nothing for Staal. The Pens got Dumolin(you know that top 4 dman on your team), Brandon Sutter(that guy you flipped for Nick Bonino who played really well in the 2016 Stanley cup playoffs) and the 8th overall pick in 2012(which the Pens screwed up by drafting Pouliot). Did you even use your brain before you typed out all that garbage?
He's technically a "bust' just cause they over drafted him still. They likely could have traded down in picks, still gotten him and maybe a few other things from another team looking to pick up one of the other studs in the draft. Just a case of misreading the draft, and missing a min/max moment that could have helped the team out a lot. Would have been real easy to not spill the beans on who you wanted so you could leverage trading your first pick for say a 4th or 5th instead plus maybe a prospect and another draft pick further down the line. But then again maybe they were just really worried someone else wanted him as much as they did. One of those hindsight is 20/20 moments.

Agreed. Johnson is still playing and anyone who plays for at least 10 seasons in the NHL can't be a bust. Plus, solid defenseman are harder to come by draft wise. It's easy to look at scorers careers 10 years later and say. "oh see, he was better". But that's apples to oranges. Johnson shouldn't be on this list.

Trading Luongo “for a bag of pucks” is an understatement. He was packaged with Oli Jokinen and dealt for Parrish and Kvasha.
Jokinen was a disappointment in my opinion.

Daigle's draft ws one of the strongest ever: Kariya, Pronger Gratton, Niedermayer, Kozlov all went right after him Later you have Koivu and Bertuzzi, Prospal, Satan, Demitra. Agree that Johnspn is not a complete bust however.

Doug Wickenheiser may not have been an All-Star.. but he did score one of the most memorable goals in Blues history - so beloved in the city that after his death from a rare cancer in 1999 (at just 37 years old) the team created the "14 Fund" charity in his honor; even the high school state championship is now called the Wickenheiser Cup. Not too bad for a draft bust... :D

I agree that Johnson is better than this list. But also Kluzak IMO. Very solid defender who was wrecked by injuries. Drafted mainly to anchor Ray Bourque and was a good partner for him. When Bourque won his first few Norris Trophies he thanked Kluzak. Should be on a different list of "What could have been if not for injuries".
If it's anything that the last 10 years have taught us, it's that goalies don't get drafted #1, or get long-term, high-money contracts. diPietro is my #1 in this list.

I feel kinda bad for some of these guys, I know a lot of them are/were head cases, but no one ever tries to do poorly and practicing and training so much just to be a let down really sucks

Yes we all get why he shouldn't have been a 1st overall. We all get the other people drafted after him... but no way should Johnson be 3rd on this list. He is a very good NHL player unlike everyone else listed here. Not just decent, but excellent. No he's not first draft pick superstar... but he is very good. So again yes he wasn't a good 1st overall pick. but he is not the 3rd worst ever by any stretch of the imagination.

Hard to believe the Detroit Red Wing's #1 overall pick in 1986 Joe Murphy (Michigan State) didn't make the list... He was a complete bust.
Summer 2020: I stopped at a convenience store to grab a drink and saw a homeless dude outside. He looked familiar and after talking to him for a minute, I realized it was former #1 pic Joe Murphy. He’s had some mental issues over the last decade and has spent time pretty much wandering across Canada, sleeping in parks. It was really sad seeing him that way.

1,Alexander Daigle-Ottawa way over paid for him.As Daigle’s agent stated,”We expected Ottawa to offer us half of what they did,and we were going to take that”.
2,When the islanders gave Dipietro that 15 year contract,most insiders and outsiders thought they were out of there mind-they were right.
you're joking right? Eric Johnson, all star, played over 600 games in the NHL, a stud on D who players have mentioned he is tough to get around . . .any team would love to have. If you have Johnson there, basing it on stats, then add Nugent-Hopkins, Chris Phillips, Rick Green or Bryan Berard. none of those are bad picks by any means.
I don't know if anyone remembers, but who was the #1 defenceman on some great Boston Bruins teams in the 80's who went all the way to the finals but eventually lost to the powerhouse Oilers - Ray Bourque . . . no one remembers #2 - the 2nd best defenceman on the Bruins after Bourque in the 80's - ladies and Gentleman meet . . . Gord Kluzak. Kluzak selection in this is unfair - Kluzak was another stud on D, but had injuries, he won a friggin NHL award, albeirt not the Norris, but still. If Kluzak is there, then add Berard, as both had career affecting injuries, and did not . .could not play a lengthy career. Kluzak- when he played in his 4 seasons was a top defenceman on one of the better teams in the 80's - a hard nosed defenceman behind Bourque. #2 D on teams who won 50 games a year. Not fair to discredit him. Without Kluzak the Bruins would not have made it to the finals in '88. He was a standout, especially in the Montreal series.

Not to forget. , Minnesota really wanted Bellows , and traded up. . . .forget with who. . To get the 2nd pick overall .
Then Minnesota traded with Boston sending some players over to Boston with a promise that Boston will not pick Bellows. Hence Bellows was not picked 1st overall.
Savard was eventually traded to the Habs near the end of his career and won a cup with them in 93 even though he didn't even play that much in the playoffs.
Habs getting Savard as a role player for the ‘93 Cup run doesn’t erase the sting of snubbing him in the draft. Maybe he could have been the young spark that would have extended the late ‘70s dynasty.
Andre Veilleux, 1st overall by NYR in 1965, NEVER played professional hockey. Owch.

Drafts prior to 1969 don't really count as between 1963 (first draft) and 1969 (first universal draft) most of the best junior players entered the league through sponsorship lists rather than the draft.

The only elite defenseman who was drafted first overall was Denis Potvin
Yeah I really can't see how any of Johnson, Daigle or Stefan are bigger busts than Yakupov. Yes, there was the most hype around Daigle, but his career was at least decent. Johnson has been a legit top pairing defenseman for most of his career. Stefan was an okay 2C/very good 3C for several years. Yakupov had one decent season, then had trouble cracking an NHL line-up of three different teams.

I guess the main difference was the hype. Daigle was touted as the next great player while Yakapov was just one of the better players in a poor draft class.

Yakupov? Bust in weaker draft class? Johnson was best d-man by a country mile in his class but overhyped to the point he was taken 1st overall with talent that was more 6th to 15th overall material. All the elite talent worthy of a first overall pick were forwards. Johnson got selected on hype because he looked so good in comparison

I have to say that Daigle for Nolan, Hexy and Forsberg trade offer is news to me. With the benefit of hindsight...WOW just WOW!
Two idiot gm's. One for making the offer and the other for turning it down.
While it would have been amazing, that "offer" never happened. Those 3 players as a package was never offered. Yes, individually accompanied by picks, etc...those were the players Quebec was rumored to be willing to move for Daigle. There was a rumoured offer that included Forsberg with one of Nolan or Hextall, but the other parts of the deal weren't as good. Keep in mind that at that time Forsberg had been drafted 6th overall 2 or 3 years before this and was averaging a pt per game in Sweden and didn't end up playing in the Nhl until the season after Daigle's rookie season. So at the 93 draft, Forsberg was a fairly unknown quantity.
While I agree Daigle was a bust as a #1 overall pick....he certainly wasn't the biggest and not even the biggest on this list.

Aaron Ekblad was going to be one of the best defencemen of our times....dominating games with his size, strength, and hockey sense....but sadly his concussions have derailed his career path and he will be lucky if he can even have a full career, let alone a good one. So I would not call Ekblad a bust. To me, he was one of the best ever...we just got robbed of actually seeing it.

Doug Wickenheiser had the misfortune of getting drafted by Montreal when the rabid French Press were demanding that the team draft Denis Savard. He didn't stand a chance in Montreal. For his sake and the sake of the team, they should have drafted Savard, who as it was turned out to be the better player (Hall of Fame). I really felt bad for Wickenheiser. May he rest in peace.
Nobody scored more beautiful goals than Denis Savard. But his style of play did not fit in with the the way hockey was played in the 1980's. Because of the Oilers players played hockey on the fly. It was a lot of passing and run and gun. Savard was a great individual player but his style would not have fit with the Oilers when they won 5 Stanley Cups. @@JustWinBabee

@@JustWinBabee It wasn't just the French press. Claude Ruel wanted Denis Savard. Instead, Irving Grundman - not a hockey guy - wanted the bigger Doug Wickenheiser. Christ, why would you go against a guy who played, coached, lived and breathed hockey? Claude knew talent.
Altho Wickenheiser never lived up to the hype in Montreal,he did OK with the Blues--tragic how he got sick--one of the High school hockey championship trophies in Missouri is called "The Wickenheiser Cup" in his honor.
It’s hard for me to think of DiPietro as a bust, since he gave all of us so many laughs over the years. All of us being the other team, natch.

Daigle had a lot of talent and could be a superstar, but he just didn't give a fuck.

Greg Joly was also ruined by injuries. He didn't miss whole seasons like Kluzak, but he did miss multiple games on several occasions in his career. He wasn't that bad in Detroit when he was healthy, but he certainly wasn't even a first rounder, let alone number one overall.
I still find myself thinking about that Kluzac pick. Picked 5th overall was Scott Stevens! Bourque and Stevens would have been an awesome pairing for the Bruins.

The name 'Rick DiPietro' makes me laugh every time I hear it because of the contract and the Islanders traded Luongo to draft him.

I think DiPietro is the worst on the technicality that they rewarded him with a huge contract that the team is still stuck with.
Also, I think Yakupov could eventually make a comeback so his position might be too high, given his age.
Don't forget that the Isles ended up trading away Luongo for peanuts as they felt he was expendable once they drafted DiPietro.... damn.

Don't forget that the reason Stefan was drafted first was due to some dealmaking. The Canucks had the 2nd and 3rd picks that year and they were going to select the Sedins, plus the Sedins had made it clear that they did not want to play on separate teams.

Felt badly for Brian Lawton. He should have been sent to the AHL after the draft to learn the NHL game. With a little patience, he may have panned out.
And the fact that Turgeon, Lafontaine, and Yzerman went after him makes things that much worse. And he didn’t even mention the guy picked 5th, Tom Barrasso.

An Mma fighter said he "wished he had lost his first fight" because it kept him from continuing to be the best and other reasons. I think telling an up and coming star they are the number one pick can be negative for their growth and being pick 2, 3, or even 5, 6 can keep them hungry, the type of player that keeps learning and survives in the Nhl. We all know it takes something special.
At least Doug Wickenheiser has a very talented cousin named Hayley who is a legend in her own right and one of the greatest women's hockey players ever.

The trouble with analyzing young hockey players is that unlike many sports, hockey takes a variety of skills and a determined, relentless attitude during games. Get a little complacent during a game and it can put a negative spotlight on you. And with the diversity of skills hockey requires, looking good against Boston College or Michigan State doesn't mean you are going to look good against the New York Rangers or the L.A. Kings. In football, if you can break the tackle of a 290 pound college lineman, you can probably break the tackle of most 290 pound NFL linemen.
I think there are more "busts" in pro hockey than in any other sport. Baseball field positions are a distant second due to hitting being very precise. Good-hitting minor leaguers can bat .210 against major league pitching.
Some picks in the top ten blossom late while others don’t survive long, stories such as Martin St. Louis always makes a person smile

Eric Johnson should not be on the list. Instead, I would replace him with Dale McCourt who, although wasn't horrible, was still underwhelming for a first overall pick. At least more so than Eric Johnson.

I am just still stunned that in 1981 the Islanders were able to trade for the Rockies 1983 #1 pick that we used to pick Pat LaFontane. He made Lawton look like a fool in his career.
Doug Wickenheiser had a great career with the Blues...still remember and mourned for his passing.
I'm from Sarnia and can honestly say yakupov was not that impressive in person during that draft year. I think the main reason why his stats were padded so well was that our roster was a joke and he was really the only forward on the team. Stamkos on the other hand was a different story 😍😍

Happy to have seen Erik Johnson win a cup with the Avs. He may have been a bust of a 1st overall pick but by all accounts, he's a good dude, and had a long, steady NHL career.
I was 17 years old when Doug Wickenheiser was drafted. The way I recall it, David Babych was touted as the best draft eligible player. It was thought that Montreal would draft Denis Savard because they wanted a Francophone star player. Also, they didn't want to get "out-Frenched by the Quebec Nordiques. Winnipeg Jets GM John Ferguson was having panic attacks in the final game of the season because he wanted Babych and Don Cherry coached Colorado was in danger of losing the game thereby finishing last for the 1st overall pick; the Montreal Canadiens had previously acquired that pick from the Rockies. As it turned out, Winnipeg won the game didn't get the first overall pick but they did get the player they wanted.
As for Gord Kluzak;
1. He wasn't a flub, he just had a BAD knee.
2. Boston, Minnesota and Toronto picked 1,2,,3 respectively.
3. The player getting the hype was Brian Bellows but many were wondering if the Bruins would take Gary Nylund. Gord Kluzak was a surprise 1st overall (though highly rated).
It would have been nice to know who was picked #2/3 etc. in these drafts to see if they really missed the mark or if it was a bad draft.

1. Alexandre Daigle (Ottawa Senators) - the talent was there. and he did put up a few serviceable seasons. He just wasn't "the next Wayne" like everyone said he was gonna be.
2. Patrik Stefan (Atlanta Thrashers) - Rumor has it the Thrashers GM took a significant under-the-table bribe from the Canucks to not take one of the Sedins.
3. Erik Johnson (St. Louis Blues) - You mean Stanley Cup champion Erik Johnson? Not even close. One of the premier Defensive Defenseman in the NHL in the mid 2000's. Just because he doesn't put up Erik Karlsson numbers doesn't mean he was a bad pick.
4. Nail Yakupov (Edmonton Oilers) - Easily the worst #1 pick in NHL history. Especially since he didn't even fill a need for the Oilers at the time. They had plenty of forwards. They needed Defensemen. They should've traded the pick or selected Murray.
5. Brian Lawton (Minnesota North Stars) - Bad pick considering the other players available. Wasn't really that bad of a player.
6. Rick DiPietro (New York Islanders) - Was a great Goaltender when he wasn't injured. Which was like, all the time.
7. Gord Kluzak (Boston Bruins) - Not familiar with him. Had a few decent seasons but looked like he was injury prone.
8. Doug Wickenheiser (Montreal Canadiens) - Played over 500 NHL games. Had a better junior career than the players selected below him.
9. Rick Pagnutti (LA Kings) - Every pick in the 1967 Draft was a bad pick.
10. Greg Joly (Washington Capitals) - Easily should be top 3. The Capitals GM made some really bad decisions when they came into the league which is why they didn't even make the playoffs in an era when it was really easy to until their 8th season.
After Joky was traded to Detroit he played well but suffered a severe wrist injury in the playoffs against Montreal. He missed almost the whole 1978-79; season and afterwards the damage to his wrist got worse which curtailed his career. He scored the last NHL goal at the old Olympia Stadium on a dramatic end to end rush with the goalie pulled to secure a tie for Detroit.

Gord Kluzak may be the nicest person I have ever met in my life. Injuries were not his fault. I was an assistant golf pro at a Boston area club. He played occasionally and would chat it up with me at the pro shop before playing. One day he came up to the pro shop and we talked about how training camp was going. I said, let me get you on the course and he responded he didn't come to play golf that day, just enjoyed our conversation so the visit was to see me. He was so sincere in every word he spoke. He knew the pressure on him, but he handled it with so much class.
Horrible choice to put Daigle #1, Daigle said himself he couldn't perform under the pressure due to depression and the lack of help he got for it

For me the things to factor in when considering a "bust".
1. Hustle, effort, motivation (or lack thereof)
2. Hype
3. Success of Players drafted later
4. How that player was managed/used (line combos, D pairings, etc)
5. Injuries
Honestly injuries/ailments happen to the best of them. And some times teams rush players back too soon from injury (Eric Lindros). Not every 1st overall pick will go on to be the next Mario Lemieux. Some just need time to develop (Marc-Andre Fleury) and some just need to find their niche. It seems unfair to the player that is plagued with injuries that never allowed them to reach their full potential to call them a bust.

@Anthony Clark That was after he was ruined ages 18-22 are important for your development, the 2012 draft wasn't that good to begin with so, if Edmonton took the right approach with him, and didn't fire Krueger, he would be a top 6 player for the oil.
Yakupov couldn't land a spot wherever he was...don't blame the Oilers. It's up to the player to do his job.

Some cities have all the luck. Edmonton has been horrible for years but they get one incredibly good player in Connor McDavid and suddenly they are contenders. Without McDavid the Oilers would still be also rans even though they have Draisatal and Nugent Hopkins who are decent NHLer's. McDavid has bailed the Oilers out more times than any single player has ever done for his team. Gretzky was great but he was also surrounded by other superstars. Mc David has did it on his own for most of his career.
I remember being convinced my Alexander Daigle rookie card would pay for my first Ferrari when I turned 16. Boy was I wrong.

Nolan, Forsberg and Hextall were all offered up individually with picks ...but never all 3 together.
