    As a retired sailor I am onboard with most of your cost saving ideas. But do remember that small shops in coastal communities often depend on seasonal business to survive and therefore make the local communities the places we like to visit.

    1. You did all that grocery shopping absent a woman to oversee you. You are a brave man. 2. I am a long distance backpacker and not a sailor so you have introduced me to some things I did not know. Long term milk and canned / jarred hot dogs. You have peaked my interest as to what I do not know and need to learn. Thanks for sharing

    We have been on a mission to cut our food costs for a couple of years and we also needed to make changes for health reasons. Lots of similar things (although we have switched from Sainsburys and Tesco to Aldi and Lidl).
    Costco do Olives in a glass jar which have a really long shelf life rather than those plastic packs from local supermarkets
    We find chickpeas a great saver. We bought 20kg or something at the start of lockdown. Easy to make our own Humus, work really well in stews, curry's etc (we use an Instant Pot clone - electric pressure cooker - like it so much we got one for home as well).
    We are experimenting with oat milk as we don't use much milk (I have coffee black, no breakfasts and Jane has switched to white or green tea without milk in a morning). It is quite easy to make your own oat milk as you need it, much cheaper. We find we waste a lot of long life milk as we open and then can't use it all before it goes off.
    I buy catering packs of coffee beans (from TankCoffee), 7kg every few months. Even keeping them for 3 months still much better than bags of ground coffee, no waste, no fridge needed and about 1/2 the price.
    A variety of Lentils, dried peas, beans, oats etc are really good bulk foods and cheap. Plenty of variety and easy to flavour in a variety of ways.
    Some Aldi have a great 1kg tub of peanut butter with no palm oil - tastes great and keeps for about a year.
    Look at sprouting beans yourselves for fresh greens.
    As for tins we use loads of tinned tomatoes, baked beans, & coconut milk
    While land based our key luxuries are cheese (although I've just bought a course from FaceBook on masking your own vegan cheese which we could do with long life ingredients on the boat) and a weekly delivery from a local farm of veg, all gown by them.
    Making bread is great, but the raw ingredients will be a lot cheaper and taste way better, with your power you might even be able to use a domestic breadmaker which makes it so easy.
    Part of our choices relate to going close to vegetarian (huge cost saving as well as environmentally better and so much healthier than meat bought on a low budget) and also my needing to change diet due to pre-diabetic diagnosis last year (now sorted but it means I've cut out sugars and significantly cut carbs, especially processed eg pasta).
    I'm sure you will save a lot with what you have done (and it is another great video), I think you could cut the cost by as much again but the changes to diet would be noticeable (different, arguably tastier and healthier too with a lower environmental footprint).
    Dave

    4 mins in and I heartily applaud your choice of supermarket! Of course you could buy items cheaper elsewhere but you wouldn't have got the quality, or the range. Or you could have bought great quality, expensively, without the wide range! I really think that supermarket (I won't advertise for bots that crawl the web looking for mentions of their name!) hits the right balance!
    Now for the next ... 8.5 mins

    I don't know if you've already tried it but powdered milk is a fantastic alternative to that long life stuff. I can honestly say I can't tell the difference between powdered semi-skimmed and fresh. The secret is to mix how much you need for the day, re stir after half an hour and use it like you would fresh milk. Really light weight and has a pretty much forever shelf life.

    Powdered milk takes up less room, tastes better than UHT, and you can make up as little or as much as you need when you need it. If its just for putting in tea then you can just put the powder straight in your cup! It is also more sustainable instead of all those cartons for the UHT.

    dope insights very much appreciated. so many sailing channels becoming all about girls in cheeky bikinis. Ya channel is refreshing. Im trying to gear up for my own sailing adventure. You find the line between educational-real world-fun-work effortlessly, it seems. that line between ego and confidence... hard to put into words... just keep it up!

    • @CadohaAdventures
      @CadohaAdventures  Před rokem +1

      Hey there, always glad to hear people are enjoying our humble little adventures. I won’t lie, an ego certainly exists. I imagine we all fall somewhere on an egotistical spectrum and I know I have plenty of it deep down, but knowing next to nothing about a subject helps to keep you humble, ha ha, and when it comes to boats, you continually realise that you still have so much to learn, well we do at least.
      The other key thing is that CZcams videos on just about any subject give you the confidence to try a thing, but 99% of our audience likely already know how to do what we’re trying to figure out and so I would never dream of presenting a subject as a ‘how to’ only ever a ‘how we’re doing it’ video.
      That’s honestly the most valuable way to present yourself because when we invariably do something wrong, so many more seasoned salts than us tend to be happy to share their wisdom, which then not only makes the videos more valuable to us, but more useful to everyone who reads the comments, hopefully 🙏🏼☺️
      That’s my take anyway. Unless you want to learn how to erect a garden fence or learn to wrestle in pyjamas, then there’s not much else I’d consider myself ‘expert’ in enough to teach 😂

    I do so enjoy seeing people shopping in Sainsbury's - it keeps the riff-raff out of Waitrose....
    Tips: Lidl porridge pots, Lidl foil packet Tuna salad, tinned peaches are comparatively very cheap, tinned pineapple has ultra-long Use By Dates, and Bachelors packet soup is quick and easy to make and really warms you up on a night watch. And Frey Bentos pies, of course (ask Tom Cunliffe....)

    glad to see you have a book about preserving 'cause I think you may find this to be a very useful way of stockpiling and saving money. You can preserve basic ingredients (e.g. meats, veg., fruit etc.) (even crabs) or prepared meals which are especially useful on a passage. Just open and heat up ready to eat no cooking. The preserving process does the cooking. No fridges or freezers required and you can store the stuff for years if done properly (much longer than the "recommended") you will find many "canners" who will testify to that. Also very convenient to store as the jars (cans) come in regular shapes and sizes. If you contact Drake Paragon (another cruising CZcamsr) he will be able to share his own experiences - this where I discovered pressure canning on boats.

  • @PaulBKal
    @PaulBKal Před 2 lety +1

    One really great addition to your larder for remote cruising is ghee, or clarified butter. It has all the fabulous advantages of butter for cooking, especially taste, but it doesn’t burn. Nor does it go off as the impurities and spoiling perishables in butter are gone, so it keeps out of the fridge. And you use about half as much as you would butter. It’s used a lot in Indian and Middle East cooking.

  • @mikedevlin2048
    @mikedevlin2048 Před 2 lety

    Victualling a vessel for any extended passage or deployment is often done from bulk suppliers… it’s cheaper and you aren’t left with packaging to store aboard before disposal at port of call…
    Whilst I know it’s expensive buying food in small local stores, it helps to keeps the local economy viable and contributes to the local economy, it’s also an opportunity to chat with locals and hear what they would recommend is worthwhile seeing, it’s quite often not what you find in popular cruising guides
    As for being self sufficient on a small sailboat I would recommend the “Free range sailing” CZcams channel…

    I equate provisioning with being a prepper!
    You are concerned about food, water, first-aid, survival gear, power needs, communications, and dozens of other needs.
    Long distance Bluewater sailing requires careful thought and planning, redundancy, backups, spares, literally multiples of so many things.
    I love watching sailing channels.
    While I'm not a sailor, prepping is a hobby.
    I firmly belief there has to be a siniliar mindset.
    Also, the more food stored in reserve, the better.
    Lastly, Isn't a ditchbag just a marine version of a bug-out bag?
    Provisioning is prepping.

Actually I think you're right on track on what you two are posting: you share your journey, the reasons why you stuff the way you do, what you've learned, what things costs, what's hard, what's not. In general you've got an honest approach on your life at sea. I've posted on several other sailing channels that my itch to sell it all is growing by the day, but that my current family setting, 1x 2 yo toddler + dog (cross border colly and German shepherd) makes that kinda complicated. We have a little emergency fund for anything unexpected, it not enough to replace a mast or engine, but enough to replace a sail or two or most parts.
      As for fuel, well we filled up the tanks before we left this year and we hope to fill them up no more than once more, tops, ideally make that last all year, and so this year we’re focused less on where we go and when, and more on what we do, where we are, and move as and when the wind is on our side, the old school way 🙏☺️⛵️

    Curious about what you are doing re Hanks meals. Have you bulk bought those too or will you have to risk supermarket seduction every time you top up for him? We always carried at least 6 months food aboard (40 foot monohull). Not only to save money but also for the extra freedom it allows. Staying longer in the perfect anchorage when everyone else has to leave to reprovision. Also allows you to visit expensive destinations. We were able to spend almost three months in Bermuda which without those food stores would have been prohibitive. If you do it again I recommend one of the big warehouse stores like Costco for the majority of bulk items, mostly then repackage into smaller units with a top up at a supermarket. The savings are immense. Enjoy your cruise.

    One of my biggest unanswered questions about long term cruising is provisioning and this video went some of the way to answering, but I would love more detail about how you actually planned 500 portions such as how you deal with use-by dates, storing perishables, fresh food, etc. Have you organised storage to make it easy to find ingredients? How much fresh meat can you start with? Do you have a freezer?
    Sorry! So many questions still. Great video all the same, I'm off to cook up some crab 🦀

    • @CadohaAdventures
      @CadohaAdventures  Před 2 lety +1

      All great questions. Well 95% of the food would last several years easily before perishing, so that’s a lot of tinned, jarred dry and dehydrated food etc.
      You can start with as much fresh meat as you can store, that you’ll eat before it spoils, so probably a weeks worth? We also have a chest freezer on board so we can indeed store even more meat if we wanted, as it happens we use that for Hanks food, as he eats very well, human grade food that’s portioned up and frozen. We also plan to catch most of our fresh protein, yesterday I shot a couple of bass, the day before I caught a couple of Mackrell, today I went out and harvested a cuttlefish and a plaice (flat fish). So all of this extends our dry stores dramatically. With regards to planning our meals we simply looked at key ingredients that we eat regularly and worked out what a portion is in terms of weight, then calculated what that would be for say 4 months?
      It all just depends on what you are happy eating, what you honestly believe you can catch yourself, and how much storage you have (ie fridges and freezers).

    OK I understand your point and this is not meant to be a downer, but rather than staying in Portland harbour drop the hook where the weymouth ferry used to berth and then asda is only a 500 metre ish walk. Drop the hook in Torbay and the number of supermakets including the german cheapos are numerous. Plymouth similar, but if you want to try dry food look at Parsley box ( scotland but very quick delivery) After Falmouth I agree until you get around lands end .
