It never occured to me that since this happened on Pandora, it would be the humans that are the real aliens. In which case, from the perspective of the Na'vi, they are defending against an alien invasion.
Humans are aliens from the perspective of the Na’vi, just as the Na’vi are aliens from humans’ standpoint. And you’re right, the Na’vi are fighting for their independence and their home, just as Americans did against the British during the Revolutionary War, as Native Americans did against their European oppressors, and as Africans did against their white enslavers through various slave uprisings. And the Na’vi are fighting back against a hostile alien invasion, exactly as the people of Earth did in Independence Day and War of the Worlds. It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.
And the humans are viewing all of what they’re doing from the perspective of the belligerent aliens from the movies I mentioned above, and from the standpoint of European settlers: we feel superior to the indigenous life, so we believe our interests greatly outweigh theirs and therefore, we feel justified in doing whatever we want to them, but they’re wrong.

A small detail that’s a nice touch; the more intense the speech gets the more the three flick their tails back and forth. The Na’vi both use their tails for both balance and to express emotion, and details like that really help with immersion, and the feeling that these are real people, not just computer generated aliens.

Today 500 indigenous tribes and countless species are being threatened by the intentional destruction of the of one of the most important ecosystems on earth,the Amazon rain forest, for monetary gain. This movie and this speech is more truth than fiction.
You have spoken from the heart. My family loves this movie. When this movie came out, a bunch of native americans went to the theater to see this.... I feel a connection to this
I belong to a set of peoples that identify with an exitnct tribe. They are mestizos, children of Spaniard conquerors and Indigenas women of the Timotes tribe, which wer shunned by both sides. The Timotes were lead to extinction and the only surviving members were these children who were too Indigenas to be Spanish and too Spanish to be Indigenas. Our lenguage has been erased. Our culture forgotten in the sand, burried with our ancestors. We stand barely a shadow of who we used to be, not even a sliver of our true roots. 1000 years of cultural identify buried beneath 3000 years of colonization. So I identify with the Na'Vi and their desire to fight back.

That’s why some people actually hated the mere fact this movie was made, and objected to the plot. Guess some people just can’t accept that some modern “ways of life” can be damaging to other people, and to the environment, or that colonialism can have a bad side. There are some wrongs in this world we should not hide from, when the topic is brought up.

This remains one of the best movie speeches I've ever heard. It's powerful, vigorous, and invokes courage and determination in all its listeners. Those writers knew what they were doing.

The story may not have aged well but the visuals have aged beautifully! The first time I saw this amazing movie was when I was almost 17 ten years ago in my sophomore year of high school. I’ll be 27 next month! The sequels have a lot to live up to. And I hope they are worth the long delay.

The movie tries to make the distinction between the sin of greed of human kind with the innocence and wonder and exploration of humans. This can be seen with the friction between the corporate head and the scientists.
@@oldmanjinkinsskyrim737 Yes, I saw that distinction but when all is said and done its a distinction with no real functional difference, the RDA were acting on behalf of mankind because the human race needed to mine unobtainuim to have any hope of surviving because it would power interstellar ships allowing mankind to colonize space, and probably unobtainuim based tech could be used to clean earth, by sending the RDA packing he thwarted humanity's last best chance or survival possibly dooming the human race to extinction.
@@katakisLives but how do you know that there aren't other planets that contain unobtainium? Also the humans mining the unobtainium was only going to delay the inevitable. Because the humans were caught in this situation of corporatocracy and irresponsibly used their vital resources for quick profit. What makes you think Pandora won't become the next Earth? Human kind IMO has it better with Jake Sully because he has a mix of human and Na'vi DNA. So if enough Na'vi children mixed with human dna are born, humans could make a comeback on Pandora with adaptations like breathing the toxic air. And if that's not the case and I am wrong, I heard there are still plants on Pandora that can produce oxygen, they just need the opportunity to grow more until the air is breathable. Which means other humans can share the land with the natives. Hopefully not try to put them into reservations but assimilate to Na'vi culture.

Its very important to note ,, Avatar places Humans in the mirror in the role of the invading "aliens" by symbolic example The Na'vi people hold a very different "lens" or way of "seeing" aka a different "perspective of realty", they are talking about ancestral lands ,, Physical Land ownership to them is as "alien" a concept as one going out buying the sun and stars and claiming that you now own them. Talk to any native elder and they will laugh at the concept of even the suggestion of physical land ownership, to them the land owns us not the other way around , Throughout history its been a common tactic for global leaders to slap a label on those who "see" differently and label "them" as lower life forms then "Us". (the fly bitten savages who live in a tree) I suggest people take a look at roots of our own source code the two key documents that define "who" is recognized as "We the people" . They both have "exclusion clauses", as to who "will be recognized" and "who" can own land . in source refection to roots of our own very real world demonstrated history , Avatar does a very good job of holding up the mirror and asking "Us" to take an inward look at the seeds of our own refection.
