Great video Paul! I got my Boating roots from going to my grandparents cottage in Michigan. They had a 16 foot Geneva Runabout and a 20 foot pontoon. They sold their cottage when I was in my early 20s. I married a nonboater. Wanted a boat so bad. After being married for about 15 years I bought my first boat, a 14 foot Sunfish sail boat. My son and I enjoyed it. But I’m a power boater. Finally bought a 19 foot Century bow rider. I was finally back on the water for real. Had that for 3 years and had the opportunity to buy my 25 foot Chaparral. Not sure what will be next. Still enjoying this one. Been in love with the water my whole life
Our first 'real' boat was an 18' Grew runabout,which I'll be sharing in the next video. There was also a 1965 Sheppard, but that's another story that you'll have to watch to video to get the fun details...
Love seeing the history for you Paul. I started boating around 1961 with a 10 ft aluminum skiff and a 1945 model Johnson outboard with no reverse. We graduated 5 years later to a 15 ft runabout with 60 hp, and electric start. Then many years after, I picked up a 19 ft bass boat (in Colorado) on a business deal long before anyone in CO knew what a bass boat was. The 115 hp Merc made a great ski boat. (circa 1980) Then a 37 year hiatus from boating to raise children. In 2017 we bought a Bayliner Cierra 2650 cruiser. In 2019 we took an epic river trip from Cincinnati to Nashville by water. 768 miles, and 8 days. Then immediately sold the boat. (sellers remorse ensued) In 2021 we moved to South Dakota just 1.7 miles from the largest lake in the region. A beautiful 1989 Sea Ray 180 bowrider found its way into our garage. Great family boat. And that is where we are today.
So happy to learn about your boating journey. Thank you for sharing. It seems we've all had great influences in our earlier years, and they are still with us today.

As a kid, my parents used to take me to the boat shows all of the time. They woke me up one morning and pulled the brochure out of a 1988 SeaSprite 195 Continental cuddy. We spent so much time on that boat, then they upgraded to a Bayliner, Carver, and back to a Bayliner. They inspired me to become a boater. I got my first skiff at the age of ten, and at the age of 42, I’m on my ninth boat lol! Currently, I have a 25’ Maxum cruiser, and my second boat that I had at the age of 13 a 1964 Thompson SeaMate. Thank you very much for sharing your video, it was super enjoyable!!!

Thanks for sharing. I grew up in fishing boats and runabouts but never anything larger. My dad often dreamed of a 35 ish foot trawler style boat but never did get one. I bought my first larger boat ( had a fishing boat forever) two years after he passed. I bet he is in heaven looking down and smiling at my adventures on the water. It is amazing the great memories boating makes.
I too often imagine my dad watching over our own boating adventures. I'm sure he's pleased 😊
Thanks Paul, this brought memories of my parents ‘65 Chris Craft Cavalier. We spent many summers going up and down the Trent system from our base at Albert’s marina on Lake Simcoe. I remember watching the Olympics on a fellow boaters tiny tv on a picnic table in Peterborough in 1976. I would have been 10.

And yes, I absolutely remember watching the opening ceremonies of the '76 Olympics with my family as well!! Literally down the road from where my parents kept the first boats in Keswick!!
This has to be one of my favourites you've done Paul. Great to see the family history and how the bug bit you. For me, it was in my blood I think. My grandfather was 1st mate on an ocean going freighter for years. His father a captain. Boating skipped my dad's generation and hit me like a ton of bricks. From sailing in my teens and then buying my first boat, a Doral, in 2003 through a Thompson Santa Cruz3100 to my 370 Sundancer we enjoyed the boating lifestyle for 17 years. Still miss it, particularly at this time of year, but live vicariously through Boating with Boogaboo. Cheers!
Great story! And, although you're not in the boating lifestyle so much these days, I'm happy to provide whatever inspiration I'm able to, even if I gotta go way back in time 😉

Hello Paul Attenborough, what a great video going back to the past, I loved it and shows that your mom and dad had such an influence on your future into boating. My father was a semi pro hockey player in Drummondville Quebec and I never wanted a boat until I married a girl who liked the water and finally bought a 18 foot Starcraft I/O, but work kept me off the water but now that we are both retired, boating will come back. Thank you, Paul, for all your time making the shows that I love watching over and over again. Gil in Massachusetts

My grandparents had the exact same house cruiser. 1973 32 ft Alwest Sea Villa. They bought it new from Dawsons and kept it in the Orillia narrows eventually moving it to their waterfront lot at Couchiching Pt. It was called The Woodchopper. My parents inherited it and didn’t sell it until around 2005 from Lagoon City. It spent most of it’s life on Lake Simcoe/Couchiching. It’s now up at Rose’s Marine in Parry Sound so it’s still around on the water. We had so much fun growing up on that boat and it inspired me to continue on in their boating footsteps. I currently own a Cruisers 390 SC moored in Honey Harbour. I thought you’d enjoy the history.
That's so cool, as my parents also bought their 32' Alcan from Dawson's as well. I remember going to see it for the first time in a storage shed that Dawson's had at the time, which was located a couple of blocks away on Riverglen Dr. Of course, that shed is now long gone, as is Dawson's Marina, although Doug Dawson is still around, offering tips and insights via his website at www.boatingwithdawsons.com/
Excellent video. When I was growing up my Dad had a Sea Ray for many years. Years later I bought a 2001 340 Sea Ray Sundancer which I take my family out on and we really enjoy! Thanks for sharing this great video along with the how you did it videos which have been very helpful!

Thanks for sharing. I remember when I was 5 going to visit my grandma on her boat at the Detroit Yacht Club. I could synchronize twin engines before I could read. I hope you had as much fun making this video as it was to watch.

Nice video, and seeing those type of boats from the 70's brings back some memories. I got started in boating when I was very small, as my uncle had a wooden speedboat and every once in awhile we were invited along. Loved it! Eventually my dad bought a boat (which needed repairs) when I was 12 or 13, and we both worked on it until it was seaworthy once again. We took that boat all over the place, and it was a great experience.
Very cool! It seems that most of us came to boating through our family's influence. That's great and I'm glad to be passing that on to our grandkids 🙂
Thanks for this, and opening up to your community, it made me smile. In the 70's my folks drove up to jacksons point. They didn't have any cottage or shack. BBQ's, the park, it was really great. All I did was hang out at Bonnie boats. Later in life, about 20 years ago, I bought a 18' bowrinder. Towing was a pain, and I had a rock encounter on nippising. That ended that, until 2 years ago. We just wanted a decent weekender to hang out on. Loving the avanti, and I'm much better at docking now 🙂
Yes, we also spent a few summer days at Bonnie Boats as well! That was prior to 1970, before the boating days. We would also go to Virginia Beach, back when there was still an actual beach there. Once in awhile we'd take the old 'Island Ferry' over to the Sand Islands for the day - that was living 😃
I have a photo that I'll share in a community post, showing that boat in the background when we visited the Sand Islands one time in the early 70's with our family's 25' StarCraft. I didn't include that pic in this video, as I didn't think it would be relevant to my viewers...
BTW, I also recall seeing crayfish for the first time, alongside the old dock at Jackson's Point 🦐
Great job!! I was born and raised on the water in the 1000 islands my mom and dad had been boat owners for 50 years! I owe my addiction to my parents aswell, that is the vacation we took every summer.

Fantastic video of your boating heritage, it was fun watching and bringing up old memories of my boating journey. Started in a 12’ alum boat with a 5.5 Johnson at my grandparents cottage in Michigan, then Dad bought a glasspar G3 which I thought was so cool as a 7yo. Naturally they had a pontoon with steel tubes forever to allow us to cruise the lake at that coveted 5 O’clock hour for GMA and Gpa. Then the list went something like this, a 16’ Ebro stinger with an 85 merc through my teen years, my first new boat was a 16’ hobbies cat and boy was that fun for a few years. And a 18’ Taylor SS jet boat I’d ordered new. Moved up north with real lakes and water so the footitis started a Sea Ray 190 SRV, a 78 Sea Ray 240sd, 270 amberjack with twins, 32 tiara. A 10 year hiatus raising kids we ended up with a 330 sundancer like your previous boat. This was the boat we had planned on spending all last summer on exploring the mysterious TSW, Georgian Bay, North Channel but 12 days into the trip received some health news that cancelled our plans. Sold the boat and have regretted it ever since. Hoping to be on the hunt for a nice freshwater 330 or 370 in the future. Oh and dad loved the old wood boats and had a number he had seemed out and found in Canada, Missasauga area. Grevettes, Shepard, fay Bowen, ditchburn etc. thanks again for the memories I haven’t thought about this in quite a few years but a wonderful walk down memory lane. Cheers!!

Awesome video! I love going back and looking at old videos and pictures from my childhood even at my young age! I started out in 2006, at a young age of 4 on my parents Four Winns on Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin, don’t remember the beginning years much, but it has clearly made a big impact in my life. Looking forward to my upcoming years- on the water! Thanks always for the inspiration!

Hi Paul I had the 37' alcan version for your 32' for 15 years. It was powered by twin 170hp Volvos. Flat bottom and only had about a 2' draft with the out drives were up and used to drag it into little bays with a 12' we used flip it on the stern.
The story I was told about that boat was it was just a hull with seats and used to take people to expo in Montreal from the mainland. Then Allwest bought them added the cabins. Mine had a flybridge as well. Most of our time was spent around Franklin Island or 12 mile. Age and health caught up and had to let it go. But god I loved that boat.

Loved this video. I started out in 70's on little a 12 foot steel boat fishing at the lake in Michigan. My Dad had a couple 21' Bayliners over the years. My first boat was a 31' Catalina sailboat and later on had a jet ski. Most recently was a Sea Ray 18' ski boat and now we have a Silverton 31 Express. We love the boating lifestyle, but it sure can be frustrating too with the never ending maintenance. Keep up the great work!
That never ending maintenance work only makes us appreciate our boats and the boating season even more!
My boating began with a 16' fiberglass open (think rowboat) boat with TWIN 10hp...yes ten...Evinrude outboards. My brother and I all but destroyed that boat running the waves of Lake Huron. We affectionately called it the "Ocean Racer". Next came a '60's model 21' Thunderbird tri-hull that we set up to salmon fish. My father moved from that to a 1976 Sea Ray SRV240 Hardtop which is what got me zeroed in on Sea Ray in later years. The boats I've actually owned started with a 10' runabout Glen-L design that I built in high school and was ultimately damaged in a storm on Mackinac Island, followed by a 14' Starcraft open, 15' Sea Nymph fish & ski, 17' Yarcraft runabout, then the Sea Ray progression of 1986 230E, 1989 268DA, 1989 300DA and finally my current 1997 330DA.
Looks like you've had a similar progression through the Sea Ray line as we did. I would have loved to see what that twin engine 16 footer would looked like - especially at speed ;-)

Great video Paul. My older brothers friend had a 20 ish century Coronado that gave my bro the bug. He soon bought a 57 chriscraft cuddy in 1975. Then he got 26 Trojan and together with my dad a e1 Trojan in 77. After t er I g e adopted hs in 78 I bought a 68 Buehler turbocraft and have had boats ever since my family is all gone now but my new wife wasn't a oater so I look forward to many good years with her on theese swflorida waters
Funny you mention a 26' Trojan, as we had its precursor - a 26' 1965 Sheppard cabin cruiser. More in that boat coming up in my next video!
We got hooked on boating 8 years ago when we rented a pontoon on Torch Lake. The next spring we got our first boat, a 28ft Rinker. Two years later we upgraded to a 35ft Rinker. Renting is a like double edged sword. Yes, you get the yahoos that don't know what they are doing and don't care but it also serves as a low risk way for people to try it out.
I'm happy that my folks rented the boat in this video. From that experience way back in 1970 to today, I'm still obsessed with the boating lifestyle!

Back in '60, my parents would get dressed (suit and tie) to go to the zoo. I started boating with dad in early 60s, water-skiing, swimming, just getting away.

This is incredible footage! Our family has just started our boating journey in the past couple of years with a 19’ 2018 Starcraft Bowrider. Watching your story certainly makes me wonder if we could be on a similar path as your family. Looking forward to the next video.
Good story. Do yourself a favour and capture as much as you can in the form of photos or video clips. They don't have to be professional, just something to look back on in the coming years. Trust me, the time goes by way too fast!

What a great video! The first boat I owned was a 1995 Starcraft 2010 Bowrider. My boating started when I was 6 months old! I grew up along the coast of North Carolina in Wrightsville Beach. Boating is in my blood and I am so lucky to still have my 91 year old Dad with me to ride on my boat. Those home video clips are awesome memories.
Yes, I've seen your dad in a couple of your videos and am so glad that you still have him in your life/boating life.
Sadly, my dad passed away in 2001 shortly after we got Boogaboo II, but I know he's still following our journeys. . .
hey Paul absolutely great story im 55 years old grew up boating on cape cod mass but add a little fishing in there , 1978 we got our family cottage on the ocean had boats 12 feet to 43 now im boating wondering which kids going to take over !

Cool, but we never got as boat from Crates - only had the 20' Starcraft launched there. And now, that's just a memory because since 2014, Crates in Keswick has been out of business after they went into receivership / bankruptcy.
Of course, there's still Crates Lake Country Boats in Orillia, as well as Crate Marine Belleville, but those are completely separate entities. . .

Good story Paul thanks for sharing, My mom and step dad would rent a friends cottage that came with a 15 or 16ft run about, then when I was around 12 they got a 19ft inboard Glasspar, we'd launch at Collins Bay, just across the bay from where you stayed on your trip to the Rideau, my Biological dad lived in the Okanagan BC he had Flat Bottom V drive drag boat 460 Ford 100mph+, a 19ft Cougar Tunnel Hall with a 200hp Johnson 90mph, my wife and I have had a couple ski boats and a couple Sea Doo, I can honestly say 100mph on water is a rush

I understand what you're saying about aluminum hulls. My friends Marinette will loosen your teeth in rough water.
And not very comfortable for some when slamming through the waves. Never bothered me, but some of my parents' guests didn't appreciate the rough ride 🤢
