Restoring Beautiful ANTIQUE Bolt / Lock Cutters ~ RESTORATION ~ I broke into the Chicken Coop?? WHY?

  • Does ANYONE ever use bolt cutters to actually cut bolts? I have these GIANT bolt cutters and and a few smaller brothers made by the same company that we're going to make BETTER than new!
    I found a bolt AND a lock to cut!
    All 3 of these amazing old bolt cutters are made by a company called H.K. Porter Inc.
    43" H.K. Porter No. 4 Bolt Cutters -The largest ones in the video are dated to the 1890's
    18" H.K. Porter No. 0 Bolt Cutters - The middle sized ones in the video are dated to the early 1900's because the handles and jaws say Everett, but the blue adjustable pieces still say Boston.
    12" H.K. Porter 12x Bolt cutters were made between 1900-1946.
    Depending on when they were made will determine whether they say Boston, Everett or Somerville 43 on the handles. Boston was on the handles up until 1900, then then they moved to Everett, MA until 1946 when they moved to Somerville, MA. The number 43 after Somerville refers to the zip code of 02143 which was Assembly Square in Somerville MA and the location of their plant. In 1987 the company was acquired by Cooper tools, and in 1988 the plant in Somerville was was closed down and moved to the Wiss facility in Statesboro, GA.
    H.K. PORTER HISTORY
    1880 - Henry K. Porter, a partner in the general machine shop of Porter and Wooster, located in Boston, Mass., patented an improved, adjustable "bolt cutter". It was designed for blacksmiths, wheelwrights, and carriage makers to snip off the excess lengths of bolts after the nut had been tightened.
    1888 - The firm became H. K. Porter.
    1900 - The firm moved from Boston, Mass., to Everett, Mass., a suburb of Boston.
    1900 - 1940 - As the horse and buggy gave way to motor power, "bolt cutters" were adapted to many new, modern cutting applications. New cutters were constantly being designed and refined to keep pace with all the new materials needing to be cut as industry expanded.
    1946 - H.K. Porter moved to Somerville, MA expanding its operations and facilities.
    1950 - 1980 - During this period, H.K. Porter expanded its product lines to include ratchet, pneumatic and hydraulic cutting tools. Specialized tools were designed for every conceivable application; such as special equipment to help Astronauts Charles Conrad and Alan Bean salvage Surveyor III during their 1969 moon walk.
    1987 - H.K. Porter was acquired by Cooper Tools.
    1988 - The H.K. Porter operation was relocated to the Wiss facility in Statesboro, GA. The H.K. Porter/Wiss/Plumb plant is one of the largest manufacturers of hand held cutting tools in the world.

    Wonderful job restoring those H.K. Porter bolt cutters from the early 1900s. The small one is an #0 size, next size is #1 size and the big beast is #3 size. My dad worked at the plant these were made at. The plant was first located in Boston, then the called the same area Everett and finally Somerville 43 referring to their zip code of 02143. The tools had not changed much between 1900 and 1960s. They made them very good there. Particularly with my dad making the tools. I have 16 tools all made at that plant! I think of my dad every time I use these tools, which is every day!

If you look at 19 minutes in you have that cutter blade on the bottom or left side. I hope this helps. I love your dogs my shadow is a cat.

    If they had that many knicks and whatnot in the blade my guess would be that the heat treat originally wasn't all that good... might think of doing a proper heat treat if you have the equipment.
    As for that puppy? He's the cutest little helper you could ask for, so I have no problem with him following you around all the time. :P

      Proper heat treat would have helped. now he's got gouges in his blades

      I disagree! Most times nicks and dings happen to bolt cutters by using them on things that are larger than they are rated to cut, not because of improper heat treat, plus t good ones are designed to be sharpened because they can be adjusted.

    I watch your videos for several reasons. My love of restoration of old rusty tools, you are the best, but also for your beautiful dogs! That little pup is precious! I know how hard it must be to let them go once they are old enough. Our shop dog was a petite Dobie female. She mated (unplanned of course) with a neighbor's Great Dane. Those were the most gorgeous pups. I wanted to keep all 6 but we had no trouble finding good homes for them.

      I'm glad you're enjoying the videos!! It's not too tough letting them go, because we have a detailed process for picking what forever homes out pups go to, and knowing they are going to amazing families makes it MUCH easier! Plus we always have our big dogs! Thanks for watching & commenting, I truly appreciate it!

    Nice clean-up on those. Mama Bear, Poppa Bear and Little Baby Bear. I was hoping to see if you were able to do anything to correct/sharpen the chipped teeth on a couple of those tools. I have a bolt cutter similar to your largest one, but it has significant chips in the jaws.

      @SalvageWorkshop  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you! When I restore hand tools or smaller tools, I do enjoy doing families of them! If your bolt cutters have the adjustments on the sides to bring the jaws closer together, you should be able to grind them straight! I would play with the adjustments BEFORE I started grinding to make sure you have enough adjustment left! Also there is a very good video on sharpening them without taking them apart, just do a search for it!

    I knew you couldn't resist detailing these out. They didn't look that good new. However I would recommend some clear over the handles so the detailing isn't the first thing to go.

      @@SalvageWorkshop I like when you do the details as well, I do that on smaller things sometimes. Since there is no reason to keep such an item as it left the factory, why not go all the way with it. Occasionally, however you might need to consider keeping originality on some items. Tools, for the most part, not so much.

    Love the videos and great job! Question though...why would the cutting edges of the bolt cutters be susceptible to heat? Wouldn't they be heat treated and tempered for extra hardness? Just curious!

    • @SalvageWorkshop
      @SalvageWorkshop  Před 4 lety +3

      Any metal is susceptible to over heating.... It would ruin the heat treatment and tempering making the cutting edges softer... I was trying to avoid that! If you enjoyed this video, I'll bet you'll enjoy some of my others! Thanks for watching & supporting the channel! Lots more to come!

    You did an excellent job restoring those three H.K. Porter bolt cutters. My dad worked at the plant that they were made in. Depending on when they were made will determine whether they say Boston, Everett or Somerville 43 on the handles. Boston was on the handles during the early 1900s, then the location was called Everett in the 1950s, then Somerville 43 in the 1960s. The 43 number refers to the zip code of 02143 which was Assembly Square Somerville Mass. Location of the plant. The plant was closed down in 1988. I have 8 different cutters and I restored them using Red and Black engine elamel for accuracy of original color. They made tools to last there. Those colors seem appropriate because the company made train engines. Thanks again for restoring those cutters, it means alot to me. Every time I use my cutters I think of my dad.

    • @SalvageWorkshop
      @SalvageWorkshop  Před 4 lety +2

      That is awesome Stephen!! I love that!! I knew that about the locations because I thoroughly research each and every project!! I choose the colors mainly based on what I liked, but I wanted them to really look as amazing as the engineering that went into them! Even UNRESTORED they are beautiful tools built to last! I am glad to have brought back memories of your dad! Thank you for sharing that!

    How do you come up with your paint schemes? Are you able to find the original colors and find the closest match or do you just make it up as you go? Because all of your stuff turns out great!

    • @SalvageWorkshop
      @SalvageWorkshop  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you Jeff, I appreciate that! I always look for original color schemes, and sometimes go that route, but many times these tools and machines weren't anything special when originally made, and many other times I can't find original colors. Most times I choose the colors & accent colors that I think go well together and make the finished product look SHARP! I also try to choose "timeless" colors that will always look great!
