Fun fact, the GBA version of the game also had that intro cutscene. Pretty impressive that it could handle it.
Eh not really. The GBA had whole movies in cartridges. Sure they looked like ass but they did exist.
Oh yeah, I remember I had a few that had a Pokemon movie or some episodes. They actually looked nice for the GBA SP.
Shrek was on that? I only remember seeing Proud Family and Yu-Gi Oh GBA videos in stores.
De-rezzed as fuck, but yeah.
It was a video, not real time.
Isn't Marluxia just so pretty?
niet
Well asking that to the fandom and they will respond...
oddly...
Huge KH fan and I have to say first time I met marluxia I thought he was a female.
+AntDude No. No he ain't.
10/10 best anime waifu ever. lol
In Japan pink is the color of death so combine that with his pink scythe and pink hair, Marluxia is basically japan's grim reaper
#boyisnthepretty
"This is Super Saiyan Rose Goku Black..."
I have a theory. Marluxia is a shinigami.
Adam Ansari *then why is kirby pink?*
That purple color, wasn't it?
We interrupt Kingdom Hearts to bring you Yu-Gi-Oh!

+NU121493255 Re-make or Rebreak
tim5fl Rebreak? What do you mean?
+NU121493255 I legitimately never thought about that lol. But regardless, "Re:" is mainly used as a prefix for response emails so, I don't know, it seems weird to tack that on the original title. But Kingdom Hearts is no stranger to weird names.
4:54 Axel isn't really chilling. He's a wild card who actually has plans to stop some of the Organization like Marluxia and Larxene. Hell, he straight up takes Vexen out.

Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories is always a title I'm going to hold dear, despite all the off and iffy things about it. For I forgive it rehashed Disney worlds and samey rooms, because it was the first Dungeon Crawler-esque game I played (way back when the GBA-version was released, I played it WAY back) and I fell in love with "choosing" rooms and feeling like I was in charge of building the mazes I traversed. Furthermore I greatly enjoyed the expanded scope of attacks you had at your disposal- Tornado, Warp, the various Strike Raid variants, the card based battle system may be much trickier to get into than the more straight-forward system in KH1, but I liked feeling in charge of my own combos, of designing my game to have the attacks I wanted to have. The varied attacks made Sora feel like he had a whole arsenal of cool tricks, and I do so like having an arsenal- see my obsessive gathering of all the souls in games like Dawn of Souls. Sure, it may be stiffer... but I like feeling overpowered.
Also, I really like the story. I can acknowledge that there's not a whole lot of it that really carries over to other games, but the Organizations civil war made the various Nobodies feel distinct and gave them far more chances to shine as characters than KH2 ended up doing. To have Sora's memories manipulated and essentially slowly destroy himself the further you went was a pretty neat subversion of the Hero's Journey-trope in kid me's opinion. And most importantly... this was the game that made me care about Riku. I was not kindly inclined towards Riku back when I played KH1. I didn't get why Sora was friends with a guy who always fought with him and stood in his way. While that was because I was a really awkward child who didn't really get the concept of a friendly rivalry, I will say that Square didn't really DO much to show that Riku cared for Sora and Kairi beyond him saving the day at the end of KH1. I just never really bought their friendship. Showing Riku despondent and alone made me see things from his point of view, get into his head, and best of all- the one who saves him from that is Mickey Mouse.
I freaking LOVE that. Riku's angst during this segment could so easily become overdone and unbearable glurgey. They could have made it so that something like... the memory of Sora is what helps him through, but I wouldn't have bought that since I was still in the mindset where I couldn't buy Riku as Sora's friend. But to have someone completely new enter his world and help him just out of the goodness of his little mousey heart, provide him with support when he had no reason to do so, and just generally be someone whom Riku could grow a brand new friendship with... it helped me see Riku in a whole new perspective. It was a friendship unburdened with the writing of KH1. A fresh new start, to help you see Riku from a fresh new perspective. Also, the Angsty JRPG Loner turns into the worlds biggest Mickey Mouse fanboy. That's just so unexpected and really adds a heaping helping of character that Riku sorely needed.
So, yeah. Not gonna deny that the levels are samey and that splitting up the plot over so many formats is frustrating. But for all those reasons above, I will always go to bat for Chain of Memories because it was just what I needed at the time to really solidify my love for Kingdom hearts, and connect to it in a way I don't think I would have if it hadn't existed. Looking forward to the next video in the series... mostly because KH2 did a lot to spoil some of that love. And I cannot wait to see the sparks fly.
An understanding of just how good of friends Riku and King Mickey are and why they’re always partied up together cannot happen without playing reverse/rebirth and that alone is so much missed out on plot juiciness that players who refuse to play the game will never come to understand. The entire title is super important and overall a great game!
Honestly I think it’s a fine game, better than the first game
My opinions on the game exactly, besides the fact that this was actually my first KH game and at the time I didn't know about Riku's friendly rivalry with Sora from KH1. But this game was, and still is, absolutely amazing to me. I'll always have a soft spot for Chain of Memories. One of my favorites in the series, even over KH1 and 2.
Honestly. I probably wouldn't have hated this game so much of it was JUST the Riku campaign. I dreaded every last second of this game UNTIL I took control of Riku. But by then i was just so burned out by the cheapness of Strike Raiding everything to death or getting DEMOLISHED if I tried not to cheese everything , that I couldn't even enjoy it as much as I should have
We really should get more opportunities to play as Riku (this is coming from a new fan who just started playing KH2)
The "Re" in "Re: Chain of Memories" is short for "remake". So it makes sense.
The game has VA cutscenes, just not in the World Floors.
Sleights only sacrifice the first card, not all 3.
If y'all think KH has a lot of stars, wait until ya play KHUX on the mobile phone.
Re: is in the title cause it's a full on remake not just a port. Same thing with Re:Coded
but re: usually is like.. used as “reply” in emails
I gotta say... I absolutely love this game. I can play it for hours, I love the customizable dungeons, I love the deck building and battle system, and I even love the story.
Me too. Lots of people don't seem to like it for some reason. But I loved it. Platinumed it and yet I still get drawn back in from time to time.
Antdude it's called re: chain of memories because it's a remake duh
+Links On Crack dafuq is up with these comments? explain.
Dare to say I actually love this one. Pulling out special moves, the strategy, the story, I srsly enjoyed it.
Incredible video!
Omg silver haired agst and round ears is the best nickname I've heard for those two since hatsune Riku and American pikachu! XD
It's all about the heart of the cards in any game, you just have to believe.
I'm just gonna say that I love the story of these games, I actually understand them pretty well (looking up the info from the Ultimanias helps), but I can understand why some would be frustrated
with the sleights, only the first one gets removed from your deck, not all 3
Another dumb mistake lol.
Premium Cards also exist.
Also, you dont need an elixir to reload sleight cards. You need a hi- item or a mega- item. Elixirs only combine the function of both mega- cards.
Dude, haven't you thought to yourself how bad of an idea this was?
+Brandon “Haunterpi” Pierce Yes. That clearly hasn't stopped me.
You know, that reminds me: Did we EVER find out what that note Pluto had says?
Haven't lost me with any of your videos so good job keep going
Absolutely love the KH love this video series is giving. Can't wait for KH2's vid.

I can't tell you how long I have been waiting for this(actually I can,about 3 months).Great review Antdude and can't wait till u do Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days and KH2 :)
Ok, Antdude? If you're gonna complain about the story's complexity in ever video, I have to wonder...why are you doing this retrospective?
I mean I started with 358/2 and learned the story BACKWARDS, and loved it. I haven't played a game in the series since dream drop distance, almost 4 years ago, but I still remember all the characters, plot points, etc. It's not THAT complicated.
+Andrew McCue To clarify, I have played through all of the games except 2, but I know 2's story by heart thanks to LPs and other media it's been portrayed in.
+Andrew McCue Because I actually like the series regardless of how the story was handled.
*****
Ok. I'm glad to hear that.
+Andrew McCue People can like stuff without liking every single aspect, you know. For instance, I can't stand the KH story, but the soundtrack, visuals, and gameplay are wonderful. You have to be pretty invested and play every game to get what's going on.
I mean, just try to explain the KH story to someone who has never heard of the series and wouldn't be a dedicated fan. Even if you don't think it's complicated, it _sounds_ complicated, which is more than enough to turn people away. Good on you for sticking with it and all, but for most people, having to do homework to get a story is not something they're fond of.
OckhamAsylum
I'm well aware, i'm not trying to say he can't like it or shouldn't. That's not my place, obviously.
My question was trying to understand why he's doing this even though he clearly expresses frustration in both videos of the retrospective so far.
It's time to d-d-d-d-d-d-d-dive into watching this one :V
.. Are you even on the right account there, G? ;V
Hey! This isn't Dream Drop Distance.
@@ScsigsGaming 3D or HD
The really cool thing about the GBA version is that there was a vs mode so if you and your friend had it. You could take your deck and duel your friend with their deck.
This was my childhood game, I love you for this. :p
the gba version of this game was actually the first KH game i ever played. going into it just as a game, not knowing anything about KH, i really enjoyed it.
Same
Lea, Xion, Roxas, Marluxia, and Larxene are my favorite Organization members. And as an aside, I DESPISE Larxene, her voice actress Shanelle Grey gave an impressive love to hate performance. I love AntDude's name for Marluxia....The Prettiest Anime
I have been waiting for this video for what felt like ages
Us Kingdom Hearts fans are made to wait aren't we
Good luck on Kingdom Hearts 2, let me know if you need any help with that.
he'll handle it just fine, it's dream drop distance that you need to worry for him when he gets to it
NinjaTyler
Dream Drop Distance was my favorite. I think he's also going to get a kick out of the other cameos in that game.
Not just dream drop distance the whole series
Moses Borras
The one thing I hope he notices, Goofy is the one to notice almost EVERYTHING!
Goofy is a lot smarter than in cartoons
to shut everyone up chain of memories is not a spinoff because of the fact that we are introduced to orgnization 13 and the idea of nobodies which ties directly into the stoty of kh2 the only reason it feels that way is because tetsuya nomouria has been putting the cart before the horse which is why the series is confusing
Wishing you luck on your next KH video!
On my latest Chain of Memories playthrough, I had planned my deck ahead so after using a whole deck of sleights, when returning the cards, I could still be able to use sleights. Then I used an Elixir and it started all over again. Quite nice, didn't ran out of them.
Great video as always Antdude! Now you've gotta do KH2. I'm just going to guess that the video itself will be one hour at most.
I found Vexen harder to fight than Riku...
Same
Abso-FUCKING-lutely. Round 1 Riku gave me shit, but by the second fight, I built a highly offensive deck that just stops anyone from doing anything, including Riku. But Vexen kept fucking me over with 0's and out of nowhere powerful attacks.
Finally! I was worried u stopped these.
I appreciate you explaining the plot!
Oh gods, that Pluto thing caught me completely off guard... thanks for the laughs.
Yaaay! A new KH retrospective
Really love the retrospectives. I've been getting back into the KH series recently and this is such a nostalgia trip. Looking forward to future videos!
And yeah, spoilers for a 14 year-old game with a plot more confusing than quantum mechanics... eh?
Litterally involves quantum mechanics
Not optimally but it's better than most
This retrospective has been...something...for me, as I've never played a Kingdom Hearts game before. Great stuff from this channel as always, though
wrong man
all games are *important* to the plot
sora roxas well, recoded did have a little impact on 3d....but days' purpose is xion?
LPFan lol it has a huge impact on kingdom hearts 3 because it might explain the events of kingdom hearts unchained X that direct with kingdom hearts X
do you mean recoded or days? if you mean days, then i dont know what you mean and if you mean recoded, than maybe
LPFan recoded. the only purpose of days is sentimental reason
sora roxas ah,nice! someone else who gets that recoded is more important to the timeline
thank you for doing this, i wanna get hyped for 3 and i havent played any spin off yet or most of 2 (as i got confused and said "imma play the spin offs" and that was 6 years ago)
Hey AntDude. Good job as always, it feels weird that back in 2007 I stared following you. I feel so old. Regardless, one thing you omitted is that the Marluxia boss fight is actually different in GBA. That last phase you described as hard is not present. It's only a two phase battle. That final one is a Re exclusive. Also Axel swears in the GBA version. You're welcome.
man im glad your doing these that way i dont have to play these games your doing a service to mankind...or at least me
"This was a huge mistake" AntDude, 2016

EXTREMELY UNPOPULAR OPINION:
Chain of Memories if my favorite Kingdom hearts games and one of my favorite games of all time period
There, I said it.
Man, that AA Trilogy poster is so neat!
Sweet retrospectives oh the KH series looking forward to KH 2
I feel like this game is really underrated, i like the gameplay of the game and the story is one of the best in the whole series!
You know, I kind of hope that the Chain of Memories battle system returns in someway.
Like, it doesn't even have to be Kingdom Heart's related, it could be a whole new series.
+Cascade Hellsing That would be really cool if they had a new game series with that gameplay.
+Cascade Hellsing A lot of it's basic ideas carried on into the future handheld titles. All the other handheld games basically used a deck system, they just took out attack slots, and made it so sleights are their own thing, with higher costs to using them, and no numbers to cancel things out.
01ChaosWarrior But then, I like the numbers and stale system. Which is basically what I was talking about
Kingdom Hearts 2. My favorite of the whole series. Also, my favorite PS2 game. Can't wait until he reviews that one.
358/2 days has such a goooood story, what I mean by good is sad. I love it
The Re at the front means that it is a remake. They did the same with Coded, as it initially released on mobile phones only in Japan.
Is it bad that Re: Chain of Memories is my favorite game in the series?
I actually always thought the "Re" stood for "Remake", which does make sense, since every "Re" title is a remake of a previous game
Unchained x is really important damnit!
Nolan Brunner then it shouldn't be a shitty mobile game that kept getting update after update adding story. If it impacts cannon then they should make a complete finished story and not a very repetitive, boring, long mobile game. I played it when it first came out and got bored with it so fast. I'm glad they came out with the movie version of it and I hope that's all the plot that matters.
With all of the build up, question answering, and even more questions that this series likes to pull, I think we can safely say this was the original FnaF.
I got kingdom hearts dream drop distance (I think that's the title) before I even knew kingdom hearts was a big complicated series, so I'm glad that this series exist.
You're missing out if you mostly used regular attacks. If you focus on leveling up sleights and occasionally CP only then you can make pretty much every move a sleight and devastate the enemies with stuff like fire tornadoes or earthquakes.
Only thing I found interesting about Riku's story was what Zexion said about how some of the islanders were gone for good because of Riku letting the darkness into the islands even though Sora brought the world back.
I now understand why Riku of Two Reflections in MTG is named Riku.
I also now understand that I must be Riku, as I am playing through all these AntDude videos in reverse order.
Ah, thus is the way of CZcams's playlist system.
That 'the more you know' jingle got me.
Ever just get an ad for Melody of Memory before a video about chain of memories
Antdude: Most of it will be regular attacks stacked on top of each other.
Me: Deck of nothing but premium cloud summon cards for endless omnislash.
I'm a couple months late on this one, but after that long comment I left on the first review, I might as well give my thoughts here, too.
I know that CoM and the remake aren't terribly popular among a lot of fans, but Re:CoM is one of my favorite entries in the series. It can be a bit repetitive, but I loved how open the card system made the game. Button mashing was a lot more difficult to do, and this game had a strategy element that really went away in future entries. As for the story, this might have been one of my favorites in the series. It was vague, but seeing Sora go through this tower and deal with his changing and conflicting memories was oddly fun. Considering that he became more of a happy-go-lucky guy after this game, going back to the remake and seeing a different side of him was nice. I have yet to play the PS3 version since I finished the PS2 one shortly before it came out, but I do plan on going back to it later.
Also, I doubt anyone remembers my mention of my progress with the HD collections on the last video, but I finally finished IIFM and moved on to BBSFM! I think I'm getting over feeling burned out with these games.
Replica Riku was frustrating as FUCK, While struggling to defeat him EVERY TIME, I thought fuck, the final boss must be fucking harder than this, but no Marluxia, defeated in 1 time, and trust me I suck at this game
Hey. At least hes not his....GBA....Version....BURN IN HELL GBA RIKU!!!!
+DragonZero XIII Have you tried the Gargoyle enemy card?
*****
No. i was never lucky enough
DragonZero XIII
Well i was and i got it like 7-11 hours into the game, the NeoShadow Card though... That's another story... And it wasn't even worth getting it :(
14:40 you can feel the terror in his voice, knowing that he has to explain it all.
I loved the way you covered one of the most ignored game of the whole series. Back when the gba version released I beat the game COUNTLESS times... and even though the repetetive card mechanics sucked, I enjoyed it for how simple it was and the story was always worth it. I hope to see you cover KH 2.5 soon!
Thankyou for the kingdom hearts collection on ps4 lol, all kingdom hearts games in order on one disc
"You don't really need to play Riku's story."
"You need both endings to understand what's going to happen in KH2."
pick one
I mean most people just suggest you watch the cutscene
Axel "chilling out in the middle" - HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *rolls off bed, laughing*
That amazing Star Tropics music at the end. Is that the ST1 version or the ST2: Zoda's Revenge version? TBH, I've only played Zoda's Revenge.
I think part of the reason many cutscenes aren't voiced is because RE: Chain of Memories was originally released for Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix in Japan. Honestly, it maybe warranted it's 2008 release in North America, but I'm able to forgive its shortcomings knowing this was just an added bonus of owning the Final Mix version of Kingdom Hearts 2. Gotta love the fact that North America didn't get these versions until the HD remakes.
Hard pill to swallow. Re:CoM is a fun game with a combat style that just takes a little getting used to. It took me two worlds before I had the combat down enough to actually enjoy the game
each time you say, "this was a bad idea" i always says this loud, "YOU HAVE NO IDEA"
Hey Antdude, are you going to cover Virtue's Last Reward before Zero Time Dilemma comes out in June? I really like your 999 video and it would be cool to spotlight zero escape again
+ReynTime Oh, I would really like to see that too!
The Re in Re:Chain of Memories means Remake.
When I beat this game as a kid (on gba), I remember the last Riku replica fight in Sora mode being so hard that: i wouldn't even rage anymore because it was hilariously unbalanced, and marluxia felt like a pretty easy battle by comparison. That may have also been helped by marluxia's bigger form slowing the gba down...
I actually really liked this game
Re:Chain of Memories & Re:Coded have the "Re:" as a part of their names because they're remakes. It's stupid, but it makes sense.
My strategy against Riku and a lot of the later bosses is to use the Strike Raid sleight to stun them. And then use the Thunder Raid right after that. Just repeat that and you will be fine.
The plot of the KH games doesn't get to crazy until after KH2, shit gets crazy and dumb and I love it.
Can't wait for KH2 but I feel very bad for you Antdude
Chain of Memories was the game that i only kept playing because i wanted to see the rest of the story XD. Although its cool how you can play the game as riku and his card system is different
luv this game
I had the GBA version. I enjoyed it and beat both story arcs. I imported KH II: Final Mix+ when it came out and it came with ReCOM. I never bought the US version
Lol I never noticed how Pluto looked! Still a great game though.
Nah, haven't lost me yet. This video's FUNNY!!
Don't ever miss an opportunity to talk about THE HEART OF THE CARDS!!!
2:11 I can never unsee that now. XD
fun fact: the battle system from this game was recycled for a game mode called flick rush for Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance!
Unchained X and X are techincally KH games, you'll have to review them too, +AntDude
You should do shirts that say, "This is a mistake."
when it comes to names....he's got it memorized
