It's so weird how Mario and the gang don't appear until the very last part of the game. It's as if you played a Final Fantasy game where all you do is compete in crocheting tournament, and once you become the champion someone tells you "Oh by the way, there's this dude Cloud Strife who is a crocheting legend, how bout you challenge him now?"

Dude, I remember playing Mario Tennis: Power Tour on the GBA, and I was amazed at how great it was. Legitimately couldn't stop playing it. Thanks for the great video, AntDude! Looks like I'll be picking up Mario Tennis and Golf for the 3DS Virtual Console soon! :D
Edit: By the way, my favorite Mario sports game is a tie between Power Tour, Mario Super Sluggers, and maybe Sports Mix.

I want to see Pink Gold Peach get swallowed by a piranha plant, get chucked by a chuckya, goomba rubbing his feet over her face, and her falling off a cliff while a Bob-Omb blows her up and Bowser chomping off her literal half of her body while 360 degree up a Koopa's butt while being flattened by a thwomp and whomp with a fiery arena all around her as her pink gold tears drop to the floor and her crown being sold on eBay, while a tack pokes her eyes while the Mario Brothers are forcing her in the pipes, Yoshi slowly devouring her arms, while Wario is taking a dump on her and the same time Nathaniel Bandy finally puts the nail in the coffin, as Pink Gold Peach's ultimate rival, and kills her off, as her body gets burnt...

The Mario spin-off series has really been going downhill lately in terms of sales, quality & critical reception...With the recent Mario Party games, the recent sports games (Mario Golf World Tour being the exception) & the RPGs getting either mixed to flat out negative reviews & piss poor sales. The only spin-off series I can say that's still going strong is the Mario Kart series, with the success of Mario Kart 8 & its switch port & how Mario Kart 8 overall is still loved by both fans & casual consumers.

Meta Shade Color Splash was actually a lot better than Sticker Star. I know that's not saying much, but I thought it was a legitimately great game. It's not as good as the first two games, but I'd put it at around the same level as Super Paper Mario.

On one hand I agree. In terms of Mario Party and the RPGs though I think it's more fans being unreasonable. Mario Party 9 is great and Mario Party 10 is worth getting just for Bowser mode. Sticker Star is just ok, but Color Splash is excellent.
I loved Mario Tennis on the GBC as a kid, which feels like an odd thing to say. Little touches like having the cafe that doesn't do anything, the quirky introduction and detailed decorations all made the academy felt alive to me when I was a little kid. Those details helped elevate this game into a memorable status for me even though it is a very bare bones game.

Aw, this isn't a video for the one on GBA? That one was made after Camelot worked on Golden Sun, so the character designs, sound effects, music, and even UI is VERY Golden Sun-esque. It's amazing.
The GBA Tennis RPG was my favorite game as a kid. I love how alex from the first game was an important side character.

We need another Tennis RPG. I'd be OK if they replaced the Paper Mario series at this point or just became the third branch of Mario RPGs.

Tonyair I doubt Mario Tennis Aces will have a RPG mode. Story mode looks more like Mission Mode from Mario Kart DS but with a world map
Also it doesn't look like they will add humans characters (which was part of the charm of Mario Sports RPG)

Didn't like most of human characters though, Advanced Tour had a lot of filler in that regard.

Review the Golden Sun Trilogy
I grew up with Power Tour on the GBA. I loved it and it's a pretty nostalgic game for me. I tried playing this one, but I hated the match lengths. Tour had 2-set, 3 or 1 game matches for rankings, while this had 2-set, 6 game matches. I HATED the match pacing and couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll try again, but for now I'm sticking to Power Tour. NOTE: It's been a while, so I may be wrong about some facts, I'm sorry if I am.
It's because the original GBC one is doing actual full tournament sets (6 games-3 sets) unlike the GBA one.
For Tennis enthusiasts, 3 games-1 set feels like way too little.
I know Power Tour you can pick Easy or Normal which just changes the match length and difficulty, but after you beat the game once you can on Technical which is harder and longer sets.

Mario Tennis Power Tour is actually one of my favorite mario tennis games, i've lost count of how many times i've beaten it and gotten all those special power shots from beating the different power training minigames multiple times, especially the Dragon Shot.
Dude, I'm so glad you talked about this game. I had it as a kid and now I just recently purchased it for 3DS VC and man it's still really fun to play. I just beat A.Coz in singles and I'm about to take on Mario.

I played the heck out of Mario Tennis Power Tour when I was a kid. It was one of the many few games that I played that introduced me to RPGs, next to Mario & Luigi and Kingdom Hearts.
Nintendo puts absolutely no effort into their newer sports games anymore. I really looked forward to the new Mario Tennis, then saw how it had absolutely no content, for 70 dollars CDN.
Super Mario Strikers had ONE unlockable team and all the arenas looked the same. ONE. And it was 70$, too.

The GBA Mario sports games were some of my first video game experiences. SO damn good.
Mario Tennis: Power Tour is REALLY worth the play. Please do a full video on it, it's my favorite Mario Sports game (the only one that's good that I've actually played lol)

Plus I feel like Action/Adventure games don't have turn-based combat. Like, they just don't. RPGs can have active combat but non-RPGs basically NEVER go turn-based.
I FREAKING LOVE the Sports RPGs Camelot made on the handhelds....so much so...that when I seen the title of the video I literally dropped everything I was doing to watch immediately...If only we could get another Mario sports game like these

Mario tennis Power Tour is really cool in that its a sequel to the story of the GBC Mario Tennis. Alex, Harry, Nina and Kate all return as coaches, and playing this game really made me appreciate Power Tour so much more.

I think one thing to consider though with Ultra Smash is that it came at a time when Nintendo was trying to bury the Wii U as quickly as possible so they could shift focus over to Switch development and it definitely shows when you look at Mario Tennis Aces which had a ton more effort put into it

Nah man. This game was amazing. Both this and the N64 version were so different but instant classics. Also, minor nitpicks, the male doubles partner’s name is Harry, not Henry. Also, you should’ve briefly mentioned that you unlock Peach by completing the main story in “Doubles”.

I freaking adored Mario Tennis Power Tour, almost exclusively for the RPG elements! I later played Mario Tennis for GBC, and loved it as well.
Really hope they bring back RPG elements to the sport games…

I didn't even know that there _was_ another Mario Tennis game when I was a kid. I _only_ played the GBC version. I was addicted to this game.
I played so much Mario Golf Advanced Tour on the GBA as a kid. I'm kinda upset you didn't cover it, but I understand why.
I played through Mario Tennis too, it's such a great game! Pretty easy though, I remember beating Mario easily too. There's also the exact same story, but you play Doubles with your chosen partner.
I've sank so many hours into this game. Played it regularly for YEARS back when it came out

Man, i absolutely LOVE mario golf, it's one of the few mario sports games i actually finished.
I remember I had a gameboy advanced one that I used to play on my DS Lite (remember those? They had that functionality!) and honestly this video makes me want to go back and actually play it again and finish it.
.... add it to the long, long list, I guess.
This was the BEST Mario Tennis game we ever got. I wish they did another game like this. Power Tennis on the GBA wasn't great, but hey, they're both better stories than the last 3 Tennis games.
Also, we had a customizable character we could port to the main console. Loved that aspect more than anything else.
This looks fun, so its good they brought it back in tennis aces.
If you do talk about the Mario and Sonic games, make sure to mention the story mode of Winter Olympic Games 2012 for the DS.
I still liked sports mixed a lot. I used it purely for the basketball hoops 3 on 3 was fun for me & it still is. I loved dodge ball. And the other sports too thou lol

I loved mario tennis on the GBA. All the mini games, the cool power shots, level system. Sad that they never come close to that in the later games.
I really really like, if not love, "Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games" for the Wii. That game was awesome!
