Tetsuya Nomura tried sea salt ice cream before making this game and loved it so much that it became a major deal in Twilight Town.
I want to try it!!!
They sell sea salt ice cream at Tokyo DisneySea
A case of Nomura randomly adding in a new element.
people often say that org 13s motives were retconned in DDD however those people fail to understand 2 things 1 xehanort in all his forms is a manipulative bastard who tells people what they want to hear so that he will have unwitting pawns to do his bidding like terra 2 if you lost something that was important to you wouldnt you trust someone who could get it back the whole thing about org 13 reclaiming their hearts was just a ploy granted xehanort doesn't show up until bbs but if you remember his obsession with the X blade the keyblade war along with how underhanded he is it makes perfect sense xehanort didnt care about being honest and xemnas wanted to keep the fact that nobodies regrow their hearts over time a secret so that the rest of org 13 would follow him and by extension xehanort without question an example of this mindset is shown in dragon ball where frieza used sayians as hired muscle to conquer planets while hiding the fact that he was the one who wiped out planet vegeta otherwise they would have turned on him
This was my first KH game.
I was surprisingly less confused than you would expect.
Same haha.
same
Yeah they explained it decently and the journal entries helped.
Yeah, me too. I didn't found that confusing
Same here. If it wasn't for the journal entries, I'd be fuckin LOST. xD

@@revolver8020 You can say these lyrics and they fit in the song so perfectly, it's not even funny
lol
You can't spell Mickey without key that means Mickey is a key
I have fighter pass 2, so when I fight on sephiroths stage with the one winged angel music ,I pause the fight and shout M I C K E, Y M O U S E Micky mouse , Micky mouse.
Oh sweet cheese it does.
17:50 Congratulations AntDude, you just ruined one of the most iconic villain theme songs of all time for everyone. Quite an achievement.
Ruined? I think you mean improved
I loved it, idc who you are.
i cant unhear it
Sea Salt ice cream is more popular in Japan. I've had it while visiting and it's actually surprisingly good. Salty, but sweet.
Is it like sea salt chocolate? I liked the chocolate

"Salty, but sweet"
*cries in 358/2 Days*
No shit.
kh2 is an amazing game & is probably my favorite game in the series. makes me realize how amazing kh3 is going to be, i hope.
Hopefully, kh3 gets released before 2020. Btw love your channel!
Jan Michael Hernandez Well you got your wish.
kh3 is probably never coming out lol
:)
oof
"Vivi from FF8" welp, found our Maleficent of the video
That one hurt. 😰
In easily my longest video yet, it's time to look at Kingdom Hearts 2. I honestly had no idea the video would be this long, and I didn't even really cover everything! Luckily the rest of the Retrospective should stick to shorter footage. For my well being, I'm hoping so.
Yay! 35 minutes of AntDude!
our lord and savior, antdude, has given us the blessing of a 35 minute video and we must show our graduate to our lord and savior, antdude.
Vivi is from 8? Wow, i thought he was from 9!
minor detail, may want to make a anotation about it, vivi its from FF9 , you tounge may had slip, anyways, thanks for this video ,been waiting for it and it cheer up my day seeing it on my sub box :)
He is from 9.
KH2 is my personal favorite KH game and one of my favorite video games.
8:15 Heartless, despite the name, actually do have hearts, they’ve just been corrupted by darkness. Nobodies are not Heartless, but yeah, they are heart-less
Antdude didn't mention Seifer, Rai, and Fuu were from ff8. Also, Tifa and Cloud's outfits in this game are based on their appearance in Final Fantasy Advent Children.
I... never realised that Yen Sid is Disney backwards.
I'm so ashamed of myself.
Me too mate me too...
Same here. The facepalm still hurts
As a just a pancake fan, this joke was beat into my head
@@TyTeaStrings , OK, I believe you.
"You have to forget everything to be a Master."
"That sucks."
"Also my name is Dis-"
**Sora leaves tower.**
*"I hate my job."*
I'm... kind of surprised you didn't bring up that if you die at a boss battle, sometimes Mickey will come out and you can play as him to bring Sora back to life.
This was the coolest feature ever to me as a kid
24:50 Honestly when Antdude said summons are unnecessary I think he angered speed runners
This is my favorite game of all time.
Just putting that out there.
Same. This game is amazing.
Same here, I was blown away by it and it's the game I have the most nostalgia for.
I have never played this game.
+Derrick Biedermann HIGHLY recommend you play it, but right after the first one. I think you'll have a much bigger appreciation for KH2's gameplay compared to the first game. KH1 was still a lot of fun though.
ok
Sea salt ice cream was something served in Japan's Disney World, if I remember correctly. Tetsuya Nomura, the series director, tried it and liked it and decided to make it a staple of the series. Might be off on some details.
When I played KH2 the first time, I thought James Arnold Taylor did Jack Sparrow convincingly enough. I played KH2 more recently, after watching all of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and all I can hear is Obi-Wan Kenobi.
You've also said that the door at the end of KH1 was Kingdom Hearts itself twice now. That's not the case. The door was just that. A door. Kingdom Hearts was behind it. Nobody in the series has properly interacted with Kingdom Hearts yet. The closest thing we've gotten to it is it being *shown* near the end of Birth by Sleep.
I always felt like the second visits to the worlds ruined the pacing of KH2. To me, it always felt like something akin The Wind Waker's Triforce quest. There's a lot of momentum built up and then the game just kind of stops it flat.
Annnd the battle that happens between Roxas implies that Roxas never physically appeared in The World That Never Was. Donald and Goofy said that they didn't see anybody there. The scene that plays out between Axel and Roxas isn't a flashback either. It's Axel and Roxas' consciousnesses meeting one last time before fading away. You also kind of gloss over Riku having a Keyblade at the end (but then again, so does the game) and Namine being Kairi's Nobody. You mention the later briefly, but never really touch on it enough to really explain.
Sorry for the long-ass wall of text that you probably won't read. xD Just typing out some thoughts as I watched the video. As a longtime fan, it's fun to nitpick.
To be fair the only way to know the story of Namine is by reading the ansem reports
"Nobody really dies in this universe..."
OH BOY.
And how!
Axel, h-he's dead... Why? Because Nobody dies in Kingdom Hearts
Fuck you, take my like

One of the most influential and memorable games of my life.
best game in the series hands down, one of the best action games of all time
"Get up on the Hydra's back!" This brings back memories. Memories of replaying this game too many times. I may need to seek help.
Never realised how empty the world's are man they need to add more NPC or make them feel lively.
Hahahaha! If you think it's bad here? Birth By Sleep and Dream Drop Distance say hi!
+Donnel Waddle Dee Yeah they were worse but I'm guessing because they were handled.
+TheKidMarl H If that was the case, they shouldn't have brought attention to where a crowd should be.
No one's in the ballroom when Cinderella and the Prince dance, a festival of fools with no one but Quasimodo, A CROWD AUDIBLY CHEERING IN THE COLISEUM AND NO ONE'S THERE!!!
+Codemastersk Then they could've used world's that don't have the need for many NPCs like Snow White.
+Donnel Waddle Dee they did.
35 minutes of antdude? perfect
Atlantica still has one of my favourite moments ever in Kingdom Hearts history:
Sora singing.
You gotta admit, that was awesome.
Viví from FF8 are you kidding me! viví is from FF9😂

Great story telling, great editing, and nice reactions. This is a helpful review for the next convoluted masterpiece we're expecting :)
Great job with this video! Been waiting for this for ages, especially since it's my favorite game of all time. This game is absolutely amazing.
Simple and Clean will always be the best Kingdom Hearts song in my opinion.
But face my fears tho...
Awesome retrospective! Can't wait for the next one!
kh2 is one of the beat game i ever played i had so much fun with this one
The Seasalt Ice cream thing came from when Tetsuya Nomura had some at Tokyo Disneyland.
Fun fact: Tetsuya Nomura actually loved sea-salt ice cream himself after getting it in Tokyo DisneySea (which is a part of the Tokyo Disneyland Resort). That's why he decided to put it in the game.
I've honestly found Critical easy once you know what you're doing... mostly cause you start with 50AP
ohh,kh2,the best video game ever (in my eyes)
i gotta say, up to this point in your KH Retrospectives, you've really helped me grasp what the hell actually is going on in the series, not easy for anyone to do, so bravo AntDude, and thank you...i know there's still more to uncover, but you're not alone in the endeavor, hmhm. Keep up the great work^^
Pretty great video Antbro, you did a great job covering everything the video needed to be a substantial review. A few slight hiccups here and there, but the structure makes up for them. Keep up the great work and congratulations on 100k subs, you deserve it.
Here's to another 100k and lots more fun content.
This is easily one of my favorite video games of all time
Roxas's opening actually took me about over an hour. So not to make things look bad at you but... Sonic: "You're too slow."

I wonder how many FF games Ant Dude has played, if any. He said in his KH1 vid that he was a big Disney fan, so I'm assuming now every FF reference he makes is something he looked up real quick.
Nice work! Love the soundtrack for this game, I remember feeling so happy when I finished the Roxas part as a kid haha
really enjoy the videos and length so far!
Antdude: "I didn't have time to get ultima weapon" *Has Ultima Weapon*
Still my favourite video game, and the Final Mix HD version makes it even better :)
That ending... I have to give you a thumbs up because you are so aware of the quality of your explanations.
hey dude! thank you so much for making this video! highly appreciated! i know it must've been a lotta work but thank you!!
The DS games in a nutshell:
Kingdom Hearts Days: Amazing story, lackluster gameplay
Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded: Amazing gameplay, lackluster story
"Sora's... DAD?" :D
This popped up in my recommended and I have to say I enjoyed watching it gg keep it up
I've only ever played Birth by Sleep, so this is a nice way for me to catch up! i do plan on playing the first two main entries eventually) i appreciate all your hard work in creating this retrospective! holy crap editing must've been FUN.
Vivi is from Final Fantasy IX!!
Remember when everyone was angry that Japan was getting exclusive Kingdom Hearts content?
Good times.
As someone who loved Hades in Hercules, there is no way to measure the joygasms I felt seeing him being so awesome in KH2. I can't explain it, I just love how he's always given new things to do and new ways to scam people, rather than just retread his plans in the movie.
I'm really enjoying this retrospective so far! I seriously can't way for the next one and for BBS since both of those were pretty decent games imo.
I need more "Sephiroth theme: Mickey Mouse Edition."
Wait.
Sora with a Dark Santa costume?
WHY DID I EVER DISS THIS GAME???
love the videos man, keep up the great work!
Hell yes I've been checking almost every day for this one
I agree with Ant, 2 is my favorite game in the franchise and that is why I was so pissed when Final mix came out and we never got it until years later. Either way, yeah SE went insane after 2 because we get another inbetween game for Roxas to remind everyone that his life sucks, a game that has no reason being there, a prequel that makes me question everything and a game that screws Sora over big time. And now four prologues before we get KH3...... stop dicking us around SE we want a Kingdom Hearts 3 already!
I'd argue that every kh game had a good reason for being made. I typed a defense for each game for each games' inclusion so far as story goes below, but if you're talking about gameplay I'd like to point out that there was a rather long stretch of time where SE kinda sucked at making games for the ps3 and kh3 would have fallen into that time period.
1. Days gave characterization to roxas and Axel that was needed for them to be returning characters, as KH2 both had them have complete character arcs that ended with their deaths. A bit of a retcon, but Roxas basically had the same thing happen to him that Sora had in CoM, so it wasn't entirely far fetched of an occurrence.
2. BBS was necessary from the secret movie in kh2. Also there were some details that needed to be addressed from kh2, like what happened with the coup against ansem the wise and the back story about kairi as well. Explaining things about the keyblade was also required at some point in the series, as you can only keep it a mystery for so long before people get disinterested in it.
3. coded was a well tuned game that foreshadowed a lot of future plot points. Plus it kinda served as a Catharsis for the audience, as the finale is one of the better ones of the series. Plus it is one of only two games in the series that ends at a place in the story that could be considered a resolution.
4. DDD was kinda needed to set up Kingdom Hearts 3. The ending of KH2 had really closed off a lot of the lose ends of the series up to that point. The other games set up audience expectations for the next game but narrative wise, as two were prequels and one was tangentially a sequel, some work had be done to put the actors in place for Three. Also some concepts had to be set up that will be important to three. People complain about time travel being an overly convoluted addition to the franchise now, but it would be so much worse if it was introduced as a concept in three.
MrDarkSol It pisses me off we had to wait so long for final mix because in my opinion on it improves the experience vastly. The Roxas battle alone makes it that much better, but then you get tons of new optional bosses, a couple new keyblades, difficulty mode, and an awesome new drive.
thumbs up for the mickey mouse sephiroth theme
2 was my first KH game and is also my favorite KH game yet. Hope 3 will take that spot and so far.. It probably will. Thanks for the new video, bud! Can't wait for rest!
I really love the 1000 Heartless fight, but on the PS2 you can really see the limit of the system. Not sure how it is in HD, but if you are strong enough to get rid of alot of heartless at once, you can notice how only a group of maybe 50 Heartless are actually renderd. The rest are 2D images and cant be attacked.
358 may be my favorite story in the series, but I will consider it a spin off since it's a prequel to Kingdom Hearts 2. Fun, right?
Idk if anyone else agrees but I think KH Coded was just not necessary, to me it just didn't add anything to the story, I might be missing something but all it said to me was they're people you need to save and these are their names, the thing is we know that already so what was the point?
Also I'm talking about the Ds version so that added cutscene involving KH X didn't count until now but still they could've just left it
Yeah, it was basically just to bridge the gap between II and 3D. All it did story wise was reveal the contents of Mickey's letter.
actually the only new things was :
Mickeys letter and that maleficent now wants the book of prophecys
i rather take recoded than 3d
Love kingdomhearts 2 so much, great video! can't wait for the ds episodes and the birth by sleep episode. hype for kh3 is unmatched
I shall never take Sepiroth seriously again.
Dance water dance!
"R! For reload!"
the best game ever made period. also the greatest final boss ever
that's a stretch
Yea, the final boss was alright, bad as sequence but not the greatest boss fight of all time
I had more issues with actual navigating Atlantica in Kingdom Hearts 1 than simply moving Sora around. Trying to get to the dolphins meant clearing the area of all enemies because you couldn’t use triangle react commands when in battle mode. Thankfully Kingdom Hearts 2 rectified this so that if you find a big chest you don’t need to defeat all active enemies to get to open it.
Great video !
This game is my favorite out of the serie
You kept saying no one dies, but when it came to Ansem the Wise you ignored his death. That was weird?
Oh yeah, he completely glossed over that didn't he?
Yep. Didn't understand why he did that.
+ErrorGaming didn't he go to the realm of darkness in birth by sleep? I mean how else would he know sora's name in that cutscene?
Well, I guess the idea is, when the machine exploded, the implication is that he went back to the realm of darkness, whereas with Axel, he literally burned up. We'd later find out he wasn't exactly dead, but we had every reason to think he was gone.
10 bucks he'll be back in KH3.
Sanctuary is better than S&C?!?!? Blasphemy.....
Harleigh19 Easily better, at least when comparing the opening versions.
Its is heresy
Simple and clean is just perfect
Both songs are amazing. Simple and Clean is really catchy and has a few really good variations (Ray of Hope and the orchestral versions are my favorite), while Sanctuary better fits thematically.
congrats on 100k my dude
Congrats,on 100,000 subscribers!
Can you do the ratchet and clank future series
Better action than the first, but not as good of a story in my opinion
CONGRATS ON 100K you've come a long way... Hey that rhymed

What is wrong with this community to absolutely HATE KH 2 Atlantica? It's easy, it's a good refresher from the battles, it's a disney series with one of the best songs. I don't get it. I LOVE going to Atlantica whenever I have the new skill for the new song
It kinda sucks dude
I don’t like it, I don’t hate it but honestly it’s a bit of a bore
@@jstdun except that it doesnt
@@Silphiroth I don't hate it either. Just a pace change from the rest of the game. KH1 atlantis had an actual world to explore, even with janky swimming controls. I much preferred that to the lackluster minigames KH tends to have
Thank you for these reviews as someone who currently cannot play kingdom Hearts one or 2 and doesn't wish to play tue gba nor owns a ps3 this made the whole story come together for me. So far the only kh I've played is birth by sleep 385/2 days and recoded all 3 of which I have not completely finished. So thanks again.
17:50 why do i love this so much
I gotta disagree with what you said about the worlds in KH2.
In KH2 the worlds had no personality and uniqueness not to mention that there was no need for the Hub World in Hollow Bastion because of the moogle shops spread about the worlds.
On the other hand when playing KH1 every world felt like a new unique experience and they each had their own personality and atmosphere and Traverse Town actually felt like home, every time I would complete a world I would return to Traverse Town to spend my riches, upgrade my equipment, Synthesise new items, grind, return puppies and sometimes just to absorb the atmosphere. People complain about Deep Jungle and Atlantica being annoying horrible worlds but they are some of my favourite worlds in the series because they are both very unique and they do their own thing, Deep Jungle was fun to explore and I would always find new paths to get places and Atlantica had the currents which would drag you off to other areas in the map.
Now don't get me wrong I adore KH2 but I felt compared to the first game it was really lacking in the worlds department. If you were to remove the music and throw a new coat of paint on the worlds from both games, I honestly wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the KH2 ones, while the KH1 worlds are unique enough for me to know what world I am in.
The only exception to this in KH2 is the 100 Acre Wood and thats because it pretty much just replicated the KH1 world. However I still love Twilight Town (Not as much as Traverse Town though)
RUBIX3 I agree completely. I like kh2 more for the battle mechanics and story, but the Disney world exploration sucks. They have no secrets. Kh2fm at least has the cavern of remembrance which is fun.
RUBIX3 A lot of the world's in KH1 weren't good at all, KH2 had better worlds but not even by that much, I mean the world exploration in KH1 was annoying and confusing, and you got the really bad worlds like Atlantica, Neverland, Deep Jungle, And Wonderland in KH1, man those are the worst worlds
i never had a problem in atlantica and neverland except for the bossfights, but those suck in almost all worlds.what makes the kh2 worlds worse is that 90% aint even connected to the plot really.you wake up in a hubworld that sucks as a hubworld which aint really a problem tho because it disappears after you leave and you only go here 3 times.then you get another hubworld which is a bit better, but there still aint a reason to go here often, then we have the fillerworlds all over the place.then we get tron and hooray its finally a unique world that is actually connected to the plot like the original worlds.....too bad you dont go here nearly often enough and all you do is some minigame stuff, some forced fights and the bossfight.and then we are already at the end of the game.
meanwhile,in kh1,the atmosphere is way more tense because shit is already happening and the worlds are actually connected through both protagonists AND antargonists.they even manage to connect a kh2 world(beasts castle) better than kh2 does it with the rest of its worlds.they even have more character connecting to the mainplot, like sora saying he wants to tell kairi he flew.it just sounds way more natural than what kh2 did
I feel like they try wayyy to hard to be cool with all edgy characters and ALL THE ZIPS
Nah man. That's one thing I really appreciate about the KH series: that they never try to be "cool", JUST for the sake of it. Games like Devil May Cry, as much as I love that game, would go under that category.
+ErrorGaming it's still a fairly odd character design principle.
oh yeah soo edgy...dumbass
That whole game is a fairly odd design principle.

I like the description lol it's so true. I'm literally crying right now, haha.

Catching my self reading these comments from 7 years ago it’s amazing how many people loved this game and it was there first kh game they ever played I love this series so much and it’s music hits home every time

29:25 riku gets back to normal “sure at this point I’ll accept anything the game throws at me” that killed me 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 and also the editing is really neat and funny in this video like when you said axel died and put spoilers : no 😂😂😂😂😂
"Sure at this point I'll accept anything the game throws at me" is pretty much a required mindset in order to be able to follow the plot in the series. 😂
Just realized how Tetsuya planned the story every step of the way, it shows with the KH2 secret ending, everything he did was all part of something greater, every cutscene we wouldn't understand, a game came out to explain the story behind it, specially with birth by sleep. BBS was a crucial in KH story, and it amazes me that it was already in Tetsuya's head when he did KH2.
I've never played the KH series and probably never will, but this video certainly makes up for it and more.
I actually think the prologue works because like Sora, Riku and Kairi on the Destiny Islands in the first game, we’re seeing what a Roxas considers to be a normal day. We get to know him before the rug is pulled out from under his feet and like all first time players get confused at the fragments of unexpected and conflicting backstory, wondering what’s going on as Roxas’s Twilight Town and his own certainty begin to break down. The simple desire Roxas gets from sitting on the station tower and eating sea salt ice cream with friends, and the happiness he gets from it are shown later in the game to reflect his relationship with Axel, and indeed how he enjoyed life with Axel and Xion in 358/2 Days. By seeing what these characters consider a happy or normal day we know what the grand schemes threaten to cost them and we as players become invested in wanting the status quo back. When things go so badly the status quo can not be repaired or recreated we feel that sadness with the characters
The end of this game does provide a return to what Sora, Riku and Kairi have been fighting for, a chance to hang out as friends on Destiny Islands, with the benefit of greatly maturing both physically and mentally. Having been out among the worlds their appetite for adventure is sated, and any mixed signals and unhealthy rivalry is gone. Lives, memories, souls and hearts have been put on the line but this trio is finally home again, and all in one piece (and at least three other pieces for Sora, as well as one other for Kairi).
By the way, I love the touch of you actually wearing different clothes when your future editing self is hitting his head off your desk.
