- This somewhat random test at the Holmes Hobbies course will grab your attention. John has fitted his sons TRX-4 with a Pro Puller 3500 motor and a Castle Copperhead 10 ESC. Then he stuffed a 3S LiPo pack in it and took it out for a rip! Crawl, he took it out for a crawl. There’s is some fun crawling in this video, but with all that power in there, it gets a person in trouble and John launches the truck a few times so you can see how much power it has. Need a system for your rig. See how much power this combo has.

Note to self for later. Jon says 1800-2200 kv, as low as 1400 kv. 2 speed can get away with 2700 kv. 3500 kv single speed. Throttle curve better on esc than tx.

I am running a 11t & lower sper gaer lowest I could go because volt up gear down & it is epic really insane low-speed control, & a great top end for trails & its a Vanquish so it handles beautiful with Holmes power.

ya brother, thats good stuff right there!! I've been running a 3500 puller in my sport for almost 3yrs now paired with a mamba X....fun indeed. Of coarse it is my "basher crawler" and mud truck but it crawls fantastic,only blew out 2 portal output gears since i've had it, and quite a few bearings cuz i never clean the damn thing but its all good;)

I’m running a 2700 puller pro with mamba x, on 4S, in my VS4 10 pro, it’s crazy but modulates so we’ll, and crawls so nicely.
Crawling and then wheelie out of it I love it, nice motor hopefully I be able to grab one before there out of stock 🤣

Love this motor in a Phoenix. Just gives and gives. But also that smooth crawl is amazing. But I would never trust anyone else driving that motor without the dual rate pushed down. Have it on a copper head 10 and on 4S.
I think all my crawlers are now Holmes powered. Now just need to get a 380 in my mini t and see how she runs

please do more high kv set ups. I love my copperhead and 4600 for my trail truck. Due to my gear down and throttle curve she's a heck of a crawler and hillclimber. I put it in as a joke but ended up loving it.
And is there a impossibel part to crawl,jump it ha ha! Amazing momentum!
I got a 3300 in a 2speed bronco,I love that wheel speed, but it also does great in low gear

Any recomendations on motor / trans / gearing setup for a traxxas summit I can drag kids, sleds, heavy toys behind? it would be nice to be stupid fast in high gear as well. or is there a better truck to accomplish this? thanks!

I'm running a trailmaster pro 2700 with mamba x with 3C in my single speed TRX 4 with 9x45 gearing. It's slow and loud
I put the copperhead/2850 in my 10iii on 4s, i love the wheel speed, an swapped to a 11 tooth to help save the axle gearsets
Try 9t. Mine on 3s yanks all 14lb of defender up on the bumper!

John what KV would you recommend for my 2 speed TRX4 blazer. Definitely want to be able to crawl in 1st but most of my running will be in open pasture land so I’m looking for plenty of speed as well.

That's the same rig I have and same motor but with a MambaX. Have been truly impressed! Holmes Hobbies FDW! Didn't even gear down. Didn't know the 3500 could handle 4s. How low should I gear down to be safe?
Wherever you want really. But as slow as possible is always a good choice with fast motors
I'm running 45 spur and 9 pinon but also underdrive front and rear gears.
That means your final drive ratio is 89.6 : 1. Don’t you think it’s a too much pressure for the gears? There must be very high strain and potential break risk on portal input gears?
No truck is slow theirs not enough (grip to ground )to matter and truck also as all Hardin gears and axles

I've gone 2700 kv in my trx4 builders kit running 10t with 45 spur to be about perfect have found the gear mesh is too tight on the factory ABC positions found going one up puts less strain on the motor eg 10t should be position B put in C so much better and replaced the TQI for a fly sky GT5 so I can choose which diff to lock better crawler and can be made to drift with the rear diff locked only 🤣

Mr Holmes I run your 2700kv in my TRX4 sport. It's a great mix of low and high speed. Never ran 4s, maybe one day! Keep it up sir. And may I ask, why no track setup in the back yard?? Looks like you have space for a sweet track around the rocks. We like running videos!
I dont really drive enough fast rigs. Maybe a little course for something like this, mix of trail and rock

@@chrisparz8722 whatever the truck came with. It's been two years since I built it. It's a little slow but I thinks it's a good mix of crawling and trailing. Tekin RX4 speed controller.
Y'know theres probably a market for a RTR crawler that do a little bashing.

My TRX4 has the 2 speed I run 9 t pinion 45 spur and Copperhead 10 crawler edition which I think is 2200 ish KV
On 3s my 14lb trx4 defender does 2nd gear wheelies till you run outta rpm... from a dead stop.

I purchased the copperhead 10 and puller pro 3500 because of this video. I've noticed the drag brake won't hold the truck 100%, it very slowly rolls down steep declines/inclines. I used a 13/45T Pinion and spur gear hoping that'd be enough to hold the truck (Near stock sport). Is it possible for this combo to 100% drag brake hold? It's an amazing combination of speed and control!
Depends on vehicle weight, traction, tire size, and gearing. Go down to a 12t and see how it does, will increase drag 8%
The copperhead doesn't have a hold function though. So you will always have a balance of smoother startup or stronger drag with motor design. I design mine to be smoooth

@@HolmesHobbies 20uS low? I tried measuring it with an arduino and wasn't sure if my program was accurate. Castle link shows the end points from calibration and I think it agreed with my arduino.
Sounds about right. Sometimes lines up better with the channel flipped though.

Under low load the 3800. Under high load (high speed) likely the 3500.

Yeah, sw3 is old hardware. Use torque control to make it better, but it won't ever match the sw4 or mamba x on startup

Let's be frank - the Traxxas TQ & TQi radios are rubbish. Cheap feel, horrible plastics & a stiff throttle & wheel action. Far & away the worst rtr radio in the crawler market.
