Interesting side note concerning the US military's experiments with MDMA. Their trials concluded that subjects became too empathetic, too passive, and far more willing to engage with an adversary on non-adversarial terms, thus the chemical had "limited to no tactical value."
Totally a schedule 1 drug, right?
similar to the LSD experiments they did. except the soldiers abandoned their weapons and gear and enjoyed the forest. some climbed trees.
@@buriedintime 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣they thought it would enhance the solider, that is funny becuase native people in the amazon would use LSD type drugs to enhance there senses.
To hunt animals for food they would give it to their hunting dogs, the drugs was so could it was like they had night vision they would hunt at night as well.
That's why it was used tactically and for that purpose.
@@folksurvival🤣
A drug researcher who attended raves says the police would turn up and ignore the drunks who were fighting and arrest the people on drugs who were hugging
That's because evil was and still is at power
I remember going to one rave in the 90s. that ended up with about 600 of us baracaded into a warehouse while the cops tried to break down the VERY heavily baracaded doors. Took em an hour to get in and then things went fucking haywire. Brilliant night, managed to even escape before getting arrests lol
And what if a fire started in the warehouse ?

Only did it in my room with a girl blasting out some music, can't imagine what that would have been like at a rave😂
You don't even need E in my experience. But a bit definitely helps to get "loose" and connect with the crowd. Throw some LSD in the mix and you're almost swallowed whole.

Go raving again. There are loads of OG ravers at every rave. I went to one last night and there were many. Just do it. I guarantee you won't be the oldest person there. Something id like to add. Illegal freeparties still happen every weekend, southwest UK especially from my experience. It’s come full circle as you mentioned and is most definitely on the rise once again!
how did you find them?
Not only the uk has them, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland which is where I’m from all have amazing raves and rave culture. It’s even outside of Europe and it’s so cool how that idea has travelled across the world and across cultures
Briztol by any chance bro? Ive not been on that scene since back in the day when tribe of frog was still doing them! : )

great vid and thank you for being 1 of the few who knows when it really started, I'm 51 and people refuse to believe me when I say 80s. Here in Australia, they call raves a doof, they hold them in middle of the bush to this day, only it's mostly ket they use.

This is quite the throwback 😊
The moral panic at the time was real. Telling a bunch of reception/year 1 kids at the time about Ecstacy, the week after Dunblane happened was one hell of a mood whiplash
EDIT: To be fair the way I've always heard it from people who were deep into rave culture was they were going for industtrial estates and not rocking up and taking over a town hall and blasting beats. Then you had the club scenes too with club ravers. Hello there Hacienda club for example
Funk and Soul all-dayers in the 70s and 80s combined with jamaican soundsystem culture had people raving before house music

nah completely different to "raves", much more mellowed out, like a blues festival is, reason it's called raving is because people were so "raving mad"

Great video as always Jimmy! A good documentary about house music is Pump Up the Volume.
And I lived through it all and loved every minute. 1989-2004 I was a major clubber, Tribal Gathering, Big Love 96, Sundissential, Club Country, Passion @ Emporium.... there were so many raves and events, they were great times, best nights of my life, never to be repeated!
My husband dj Passion a far few times.

When you discussed the impact of ecstasy, I was very suddenly and deeply moved. For a second, I was taken back to those times and that feeling. The value of that time, something that changed forever those who were there. I am 52 now. I won't bore you with my story, but suffice it to say - I lived full time in Ibiza from 2009-2021. The rave ethos is very personal to me. P.L.U.R. 🤪🤩

17:48 Orbital :)
Back in highschool (early 2000's) I started to listen artists like Future Sound of London, Orbital, The Prodigy, the Chemical Brothers, Juno Reactor, et cetera. Back then it was all "techno" to me, maybe slighly more intelligent than what was commonly known as "techno" (read: cheap and silly pop dance music, popular at discoteques at the time). Then "Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music" came along, allowing me to educate myself in the matter...
Getting into this music was just a matter of time, I always liked electronic music and artists like Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre and "Synthesizer Greatest" compilations.
First heard the term "rave" when I was reading about The Prodigy - "Music for the Jilted Generation" was supposed to be reaction to the British law essentially banning the rave parties in 1994 (f___ 'em and their law!). I really liked the MFtJG, since two tracks, "Voodoo People" and "One Love" were used in the movie "Hackers". I also liked their first album "Experience" made in style of "breakbeat hardcore" (aka "oldschool rave" - common ancestor of jungle and happy hardcore) and "The Fat of the Land".
the phenomenon so far known as "techno subculture" became known as "rave culture".
I never was at the rave party. But I really like the music, like house (Daft Punk), actual techno (Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance, Chris Liebing, Siasia), trance (Astral Projection, early Juno Reactor), drum and bass (4 Hero, Omni Trio, LTJ Bukem), et cetera. Sadly the internet radio "Digitally Imported" which provided live shows for many electronic music genres, became more and more annoying with ads and then disabled playing links in external music player like Foobar 2000. Luckily the single-style radios, like jungletrain, BassDrive (drum and bass) or deepinradio (deep house) still work.
When it comes to the culture, I think the PLUR (peace love unity respect) was not only nice, but also very different from how "techno" fans were stereotypally portraied, mostly by metalheards (read: gopniks/chavs constantly high on drugs (usually amphetamine), making lots of noise and acting violently towards anything that moves). I like the idea that people may throw away their differences, like race, nationality or sexual orientation and just party together like there's no tomorrow. After all, we're all humans, you know? Place where you can be accepted no matter who you are sounds like a paradise to someone like me - socially anxious, awkward and not really feeling welcome anywhere.
It's really sad that moral panic around rave parties made MDMA illegal, despite being successful in treating PTSD and could be very promising for severe social anxiety disorder. Taking drugs at the parties is risky (to say the least), but if they can help people, they should be allowed for psychiatric use, at least IMHO.
Iskur's guide was great. They don't have websites like that anymore. Before Flash was discontinued.

If I could travel back in time to any point, it would be to the early days of raves and free parties in the late 80s and early 90s. Forget ancient Rome or 1960s San Fransisco.

In the early to mid 90's I used to get booked for Raves and took between 30 and 60 fire / stage performers, put on massive pyrotechnic shows with flame throwers, explosives and big trucks with 40ft towers and all sorts, performed with Orbital, Fat Boy Slim, Carl Cox and loads more, they were the daze. The main outside shows would get up to 20k people watching.

A friend of mine tried an "E" for the first time a couple of months ago, at the age of 54. He had a great time and wished he'd done it when he was young, if only to make the music more palatable. Great video mate. Not exactly how I remember it, but I guess that's obvious. I was living on site and no one got away with calling us hippies. One thing you picked up on, that really holds true, is that people organised together, whether it was Anarcho Punk, Techno, Acid House Psychadelic Rock; we all shared the stage and danced. There was unity. I remember going to Reading and watching Poisoned Electric Head, along with Acid DJ's and Punk bands. What a night, totally good. The festival thatreally stands out from that era, was Treworgy Tree Festival in Cornwall.
I spent the 90's at the warehouse parties around London. You'd get the odd hippy, but most were definitely not 😁 Most of the people I was with were punks.
