What's the difference between a TS, TRS and TRRS cable?

- How to tell the difference between TS, TRS and TRRS cables, and what each are used for in the home studio:
TS = Tip/Sleeve - mono unbalanced cable used for instruments, speakers
TRS = Tip/Ring/Sleeve - mono (balanced) or stereo (unbalanced) cable used for line level inputs and outputs (mono) and headphones/inserts (stereo)
TRRS = Tip/Ring/Ring/Sleeve - stereo (unbalanced) + microphone cable, used for smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Hey, thanks a lot. Just bought my first condenser microphone for recording my acoustic and was wondering how is it possible to connect it to my amp if I want. Now I know what cable to buy and got some good additional general knowledge as well. Short, simple yet very instructional. Thanks again.
Hey there. Youâre very welcome. Just remember that a condenser mic requires phantom power so make sure you are goi if through a mixer of interface which can provide 48v of phantom power.
My God! Man you saved my life. For the longest time I was wondering why I was getting sound only in my left ear when connecting to an audio interface, I had the bloody TS cable. Finally resolved it, thanks dude

Perfect. Thank you. Just spent hours asking people I knew for help on how to record from a device onto my phone and nobody could help other than tell me to get a computer. After enough googling I decided that I needed a TRRS cable, but didnât know why and wasnât totally sure that it would fix my problem. I went to guitar center to buy one, and after searching for a while with an employee, they looked it up in their system and said that they didnât have any in stock, had never had any in stock, and didnât ever plan on having any. They could order me one, but it was on backorder and it literally wasnât worth waiting around for it because theyâd had other stuff on back order for 3 months. I came home feeling pretty hopeless, but figured I should to more googling/YouTubing. Found this video and YES! I know exactly what I need, exactly why I need it, and itâs only $10 on Amazon. Just ordered it and should be ready to record on a scuffed iPhone setup by the weekend. THANK YOU!!!
Very glad to help my friend. Thanks for watching and taking the time to to provide feedback.

This clears up my confusion around a Christmas gift lavaliere mic, and the adapters required to hook it to my phone. Thanks, Pete!
Awesome! Very glad to hear it my friend.
VERY VERY HELPFUL. I hate when people just say 'plug this here, stick this there,' with little to no explanation so you don't learn the importance of WHY its best/necessary to do or not do something. And for that, I just subbed...thx! đ
Thanks for the kind words and support my friend. Appreciate it.
Big thanks...You were clear...easy to understand and EXTREMELY HELPFUL. here's to hoping all good things come to you. I've been using a mic into a preamp and then popped an XLR to ts adapter to run it as a line in on my interface but I kept getting distortion and I couldn't tell from where. Well I guess that adapter was meant for guitars...and I've been walking in circles wondering why I was getting distortion...I thought it was a gain staging thing. Now I know why. They look alike and fit right...but they aren't the same. Thanks again.
Yup. Itâs probably the most common issue folks have with audio. Glad the video helped.
Perfect length, clear, helpful explanation - awesome video! Cheers!
Thanks my friend. Very glad to hear it. đ
Killer video friend! Answered all of my questions and some I didn't know I had.
Haha! Great to hear. đ
Thanks! Had a lot of trouble just getting a straight answer on whether an unbalanced stereo jack is the same as a balanced mono jack - as in, TRS. Some shops only say stereo jack and mention nothing about TS/TRS/balance so it was really confusing.
Yes, itâs not a super simple concept to understand and cables at often confusing in their labelling. M

Hi Pete, love your videos, you always answer my questions that I have for any audio problems I run into!!! Thank you! I bought a usb c to aux adapter but it wonât work, how can I make it connect to a phone without Bluetooth ? I like to hear myself on the speaker when Iâm recording so thatâs why
Hmmmmm..... I wonder if it does have an actual analog audio output? Iâm not sure or familiar with the speaker. Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group?

@@PeteJohnsMusic Thx. I subbed!
Hey Pete - great video. Just to clarify - it sounds like a guitar would not be able to be connected to the the balanced trs line inputs, correct? Would need either a mixer or an interface with additional ts/instrument inputs instead?
Correct. Guitars need a unbalanced TS cable. Some 1/4â TRS inputs like those on many mixers and interfaces can support TS (often called instrument or Hi-Z) but may need you to set this.
Thanks Pete!

this is awesome! thank you so much. I have a couple follow up questions: at 3:03, you say that the line inputs are expecting a TRS, balanced mono input. But I thought that TRS cables sent stereo? When would you be plugging in a TRS cable to the input? Like with a hardware compressor or something?
Also, what happens to the instrument input to get it up to line level? I know XLR goes through a pre-amp, does the Hi-Z input as well?
Thank you!
Hey there. Yes, TRS can either be balanced mono or unbalanced stereo. It carries two signals and a ground which are either stereo signals or the standard and reversed signal which makes up a balanced cable.
The instrument inputs effectively add gain to boost the signal. Itâs not a preamp per se but a similar concept.
My cable guide here might help. studiolivetoday.com/cables
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thank you so much for this!! Your videos and expertise have been SO helpful. What's the best way to tell if you should be plugging an instrument into an interface via a TRS or a TS cable? I heard (it could have been one of your videos) that for instruments that have their own amplification (certain synths), or if they have specified the outputs to be "balanced", then go into line? The rest (guitars, bass, unamplified synths, etc) go to instrument/Hi-z? Does that sound right? Thank you đ
