I have learned an awful lot about UK Parliament and how it is structured, but one thing I still do not understand is what the British Royal Family does, especially in this day and age. Most Americans like myself assume the Queen and Royal family are simply there for tradition, and that they hold no actual power or government responsibly. Since the USA does not have a royal family I am very interested to see what it is that the United Kingdom royal family does. If you enjoy my reaction feel free to leave a like, comment, or subscribe for more videos like this!

Any checks & balances are provided by the House of Lords and these are mostly recorded and can be watched on TV. The monarchy is very much a puppet. Government tell the monarch what to do, this was well illustrated when Boris demanded the Queen prorogue (dissolve) Parliament just before he became PM. There was a huge outcry of a suspected misuse of power and a high profile court case where the Supreme Court decided that there was a misuse of power and the proroguing of Parliament was illegal.

There's a great story about Putin visiting the UK in his early days as leader of Russia. One of the senior ministers at the time was David Blunkett who was (still is) severely visually impaired and has a guide dog. Being a fully trained guide dog, it usually remained calm and did his job but on this occasion he was aggressive towards Putin. Mr Blunkett apologised to the Queen afterwards for his dog's behaviour. The Queen simply replied (in a rare but subtle statement of opinion), "Yes, dogs do have that special instinct, don't they."

The part of royalty that most Americans seem to miss,is that there is a kind of spiritual aspect.the king or Queen is the living symbol ,that represents the aspirations of the Nation. Imagine if Uncle Sam had been an actual person and that there was a direct genetic link from Uncle Sam in a person today. So the Monarch is the living link to the nation’s history. Being royal is not celebrity…. It is a vocation, a job. It all sounds fun, dressing up etc but when you have dressed up and opened your twentieth new sewage works? Yet you must reward all those who have anything to do, with said sewage works. You have been briefed, show interest and acknowledge the work done. Royalty convey thanks to all those in all work which provide services for us all. As they are not political , any political comments are frowned upon. They must have political opinions but they do not make them public. They are a continuous link in the life of the nation. I am in my eighties and the Queen has always been there in her place uniting us all. Politicians come and go. Intellectually ,I understand why Americans think it weird because it is! But it works, I would say to you, look at all countries that have royals…..on the whole they tend to be the most stable.

The Queen can’t do a commonwealth tour to America, because you are not a member of the commonwealth. The tours are not to promote Britain, they are her visiting the countries that she is still the queen of or used to be queen of. Regina is the feminine form of Regent.
When one REGisters anything it means to inform The Regent that one has possesion
      of the said REG-istered property.
By REGistering - one assigns the ownership of that property to the CROWN Authority -
and one only maintains possession under License.
This is why the Government being an agent of the CROWN ca lawfully and legally
seize the property as the CROWN owns it.
Otherwise it would be theft - What prevents it from being theft is the REG-istration
      contact.
When a baby is 'delivered' The Baby is Registered - and the DOCK-tor is the informant.
That baby becomes the property of the CROWN - and the CROWN or its AGENT can

At least someone who tries to educte himself. I appreciate that a lot. Most Americans have zero understanding of the concept of Royality yet still they have a lot and a loud opinion on the Royals. There is so much misunderstanding. I think the biggest misunderstanding is the difference between royalty and celebrity. The lifestyle isnt as close as lavish, as Americans think. Of course they live in "palaces" but that means, they live in an appartment within a palace and these palaces are beautiful for sure, but no luxury. They get paid by the taxpayers to do their job. To represent the crown, country, the people, for service, to raise money, to take on the patronages of many many organizations etc. They do not cash in privately. The do give financial reports, like how much taxpayers money was used on what and how much money they raised and their Foundations keeps a 100% of the donations. There is a certain American Duchess who never understood that and never even tried to. I guess she thought she would sit on a golden throne all day long, wear a crown and command and bully her stuff. She in fact did want a lavish lifestyle and she managed to waste more money on clothes in her 2 years, than any female european royal before. It was insane. She did not understand her role and the difference between being a celebrity and a royal. I guess she was dissapointed as well, that she wasnt allowed to use her title and status to privately make deals and cash in from in, while being a working member of the royal family. And now she uses the lack of knowledge amongst the Americans to create a whole new narrative and to build a whole carrer on it. Lying, victimizing and milking and selling her titles for big deals, just because it works in America...unfortunately. She wants to create herself as the American Princess (a title she never had and never would have had) while she never even managed to actual do the job of a Duchess, that she signed up for.

🇳🇿 Hi Tyler, stumbled into your video just now and really enjoyed observing an American perspective when accessing information about the BRF. I am a New Zealander. New Zealand is a former member of the British Empire and along with most other former members of the British Empire is now a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Although some nations are in the process of choosing to become Republics they can still to opt to remain a part of the Commonwealth, indeed some countries from outside the Commonwealth have actually volunteered to become members ! The Queen is our Head of State in NZ and as you noted re flags, the NZ flag has the Union Jack in the upper left corner indicating our historic connection to the United Kingdom. I grew up aware Queen Elizabeth II was our reigning queen and we have various ceremonies of acknowledgement to that fact. I recall her Majesty visiting NZ when I was a child but all in all didn't really pay too much attention to all things Royal. However I became interested in recent times to actually fill in the gaps and find out more about the Constitution of Royalty.
I have to say, like you, I too have been almost blindsided by the sheer volume of works undertaken in the name of royal duty. My respect for those senior royals who undertake what must surely, at times, rank as somewhat onerous tasks knows no bounds ! Simply reflecting on the unremitting hours and hours and hours of costume fittings for a multitude of public engagements alone, never mind other endless navigations involved in appearing in peak condition and to fit not just one appearance but at times two and three such engagements in one day. That has to be pretty exhausting work at times. And that's not covering the overseas trips to the Commonwealth countries with significant time away from families.
No small ask in my opinion. And there is so so much more.

First of all: Britain and British mean the same as UK; you're thinking of *Great* Britain being different (yes this is confusing). Unfortunately this video's guy gets it a bit wrong, whether because he's American himself or some other reason: all that stuff about the Crown being 'ceremonial' or 'symbolic' or 'traditional' or the monarch's powers being 'limited' is not true. The Crown's power is still the ultimate power, the difference is that it's informally DELEGATED to Parliament (in practice often the Prime Minister) - the idea of limitations and checks and balances being written down on paper is mostly an American idea. In theory there's nothing to stop the monarch ruling alone by decree, but the last time one tried it, Parliament had his head cut off (and when the Queen opens Parliament today, they slam the doors in her face and make her wait in a room with King Charles' death warrant on the wall, just in case she gets any funny ideas). The British constitution runs on accepted precedent rather than it being written down in one place (which, as we've seen in the US, just means you need to get the 'right' supreme court to 'creatively interpret' what it says and then you can do whatever you want, so much for checks and balances).

She enters the House of Lords, and her Equery goes through to the House of Commons, to summon all the M.P.'s to go into the Lords to hear her speech. The slamming of the door, and Black Rod knocking on it before he walks down to invite the M.P.'s is Ceremonial, and shows the Commkns still has it's powers to refuse. This goes back to when Oliver Cromwell was in power. Also, about the Queen having to wait in a side room, what happens us, she arrives, and her Crown, Orb and Septre arrive in a different car/carriage. On entering the House of Lords building, the Queen then goes into a room to get ready. There, she used to have the Crown put on her head, but as she's now in her 90's, and the Crown is quite heavy, she hasn't worn it for a few years, but it is placed where she makes her speech.

    Dear Mr Rumple,
The United Kingdom - which is still interchangeable with the use of the term Great Britain - but used less and less, as the term “Great Britain” is really a “left-over” from the days when Great Britain WAS the “biggest” kingdom in the world, by being the Country (which was England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, eg: Great Britain) that conquered either by force, or by just stepping in over the native peoples of a country, taking over saying it then had acquired those countries. (Usually trying to beat the French, the Spanish, the Portuguese, the Dutch or the Belgian kingdoms to these “new lands”)
They walked in” and “took over” Canada too. And they “swapped” some islands (yours) with the Dutch, then, so the story goes, “bought” with trinkets, I believe, what is now known as the United States of America from some native peoples on that land.
I am skipping a hell of a lot of history here, but you will get my drift.
Then the Colonies of the Americas (which became the USA) revolted against Britain for perceived (rightly) unfair practices or similar conduct - mostly to do with taxes & representation - thus your War of Independence against Great Britain came about. However, your fledgling Government then went about writing your new Rules which became the beginning of some laws (yes, I know, your Constitution) you took a good many laws from Britain and, rightly, used some, changed some and made some to apply to the new land etc. And whilst creating these rules by which to govern, you also created the position of PRESIDENT.
    The reason?
Every other country had a Head of State to deal with other Heads of State and did not want to be made feel inferior to the mostly Kings or Queens of Europe. France had their French Revolution and literally did away with their Heads of State, (pardon the pun) their King and Queen. But they still had to have a head of State - the last person to”sign off” on everything.
    Hence a President for you.
But somehow, your President (I don’t know how; it may have been a gradual thing, or a thing created within the fledgling USA government, perhaps you will know from your history lessons on your country) became PARTISAN. A member and/or beholden to the folk who voted him into the position of President. Now, this is the bit I wanted to explain, if I may.
The Queen (or King - which will be Charles in the not too distant future) or any working Royal, cannot belong to ANY political faction.
However, she/he “officially” approves of the new leader of the Party who wins government by election of the people and the person voted in to become Prime Minister by his party, goes to visit the Queen for that approval.
He or she as Prime Minister, usually visits the Queen on a regular basis to discus whatever it is they discuss, (it might be weekly, ?? I do forget my history a bit - I am nearly 79yrs old, Sir!) however, I believe if a Monarch is incapacitated - ill, away on official business someplace or gone mad, even (! It has happened to Monarchs in the past; or at least that was what was thought in those days - medicine being what it was back then!) the Government decides to “create” a Regent who takes over the King or Queen’s duties until that Monarch passes away.
Then the heir becomes King or Queen. The Regent is often the heir, but, say, as in many years ago, a Monarch died whilst the heir was a baby, or a child or at least under age, the Regent appointed would be an adult close or related to the future Monarch who was unable to fulfil any duties until older.
There have been many shenanigans in the past where another member of a royal household believes they could usurp the young king/queen. And often wars were fought on such matters.
If you are interested, read the history of King Richard III; (not Shakespeare’s PLAY - he wrote that to make Richard III the “bad guy” to please Queen Elizabeth I, daughter of King Henry VIII, and grand-daughter of the man who beat Richard III, to become King at that time) Or the War of the Roses in England! I still, at my age, love reading about British or European history - it is often far more exciting than a modern novel! However, you’ve got to find the RIGHT history book! Sorry I digress.
I’ve just re-read my “screed” here! I do apologise for rambling on!
Perhaps this won’t even get sent to you! Oh well, never mind I enjoyed typing it, even if you think I’m mad - that will at least mean this thing got sent!
I did enjoy your original interest in the Royal Family (yes, the House of Windsor) and giggled quite a bit! But I did “English History” all through school as nearly all good Commonwealth kids in many Countries when I was young.
Thank you for reading and cheers from me in Perth, Western Australia (the most remote city in the World!)

She certainly has done that. She has to be apolitical as she's had 14 different Prime Ministers during her 70 year reign. She is known for her love of corgis and her sense of humour

Gosh you’re a great young guy! You’re such a joy to listen to. You just popped up in my videos and I will watch all your work. I am Canadian and the monarch is my head of state. Our prime ministers consult with the monarch and her Governor General, who is her majesty”s direct representative in Canada. Thank you for learning about the monarchy and governments she oversees. This is a time when this foundation stone of our governments is under serious threat from sinister forces, not least harry and Meghan- who left their roles because they couldn’t sit around all day doing what they want and prostitute the public good that is their title. When you wear a title you serve the people of the realm. They serve themselves and should not use the titles to make money. One more thing- Charles has actually stepped into difficult life and death situations and negotiated release of common wealth citizens from Arabian nations. He’s saved individual lives more than once. Thanks for being open minded and so cool.

Her late Majesty has been in the same job for over 70 years. Working almost non-stop, being held to a schedule fixed for months or years ahead, she couldn't just lie in bed all day doing nothing. It's what she knew she was born for, and she has done everything possible to keep her promise to serve all her life.

Elizabeth II is Queen of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms, not just Great Britain or England. People commonly get this wrong, and especially American channels. At least the guy in the video you are reacting to didn’t refer to the ‘English Royal Family’ like so many American channels do.
Don’t worry that you didn’t know all of this, a lot of people in the UK don’t know either.

Sorry to jump in again. Before WWI, the royal house was the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, from an area in Germany where Queen Victoria's husband came from. Because of the war with Germany, they disowned most of their German cousins and changed the name of the house to Windsor, the name of a favorite castle and estate. Most close royal relatives carry the last name of Windsor or Mountbatten-Windsor. When Charles becomes king, the "working royal family" will shrink significantly and pretty much everyone will need to get a job. Ahhh - you said - representing the UK. NO she is not representing the UK when visiting the Commonwealth, She is the Queen of Australia, the Queen of Canada, the Queen of Jamaica, etc.

Lol I am really enjoying your journey into learning more about the Royal Family and the British way of doing things in general. I am Canadian. My father was in the military so he swore his oath to The Queen and he took that oath very seriously. His regiment was named for her. As a consequence I went to schools on military bases and we began each day singing God Save The Queen even before our own National Anthem and every room had a portrait of the Queen. All of our government buildings likewise have her portrait (which will now be changed for King Charles III). Our stamps, our money also have her portraits on them. The highway here where I live is the Queen Elizabeth Way, the ER emblem is on many of the light standards. All this to say, I grew up stewed in the Monarchy and all things British even though my own families people hail from The Netherlands. We have a parliamentary system. We practice British law. Many of us have memories of Royal visits throughout our lifetimes. My parents lived in what is called Loyalist Country here in Ontario. It’s all woven throughout our culture. So, it’s delightful for me to watch an American discover some of all these quirks and traditions and such. It’s unfathomable to me to live in a world where I was totally unaware of these things so it’s really fun to see it all through your experience.

When she is on tour to her realms, she is actually QUEEN and head of state of that country, therefore she will be known for instance as the QUEEN of Canada, or Australia. Most commonwealth nations have removed her Majesty as head of state but as a member of the commonwealth, they understand she and her father snd grandfather built it. The Commonwealth is a voluntary organisation and countries can leave of they want to. Countries that have been outside the empire have recently joined, such as Mozambique, and Rwanda, a few countries have been expelled, Pakistan and Zimbabwe, and i think one has left. But being part of the commonwealth does not mean the QUEEN is head of state.

The Queen has made 3 official state visits to the US. But has visited a few more times on other types of visit. She staye with he Regans on their ranch as they were both keen riders. She has made at least two unofficial visits in regards to horse racing and purchaseing race horses. She has met all but one of the US Presidents and that was Lyndon B Johnson as such a visit either by her or him was not possible between the assasination of President Kennedy and the Election which then saw Nixon take the job.

Dude you're still getting confused over the word "British". You're absolutely right to remember the CGP Grey video (where you learned that Great Britain isn't the same as the UK), but just remember that "British" is still also the general adjective for anything to do with the UK. So the "British" flag means the UK flag. The "British" royal family means the UK royal family. So even though "(Great) Britain" is technically an island excluding Northern Ireland, the word "British" is just the standard adjective we all use to describe "things from the UK". You'll get it eventually!
