      I still love her in the Episode 'Chimera' with Odo experiencing what he was really like, and when she was changed into the Cardassian daughter of Gul Marel, and of course when she was in that Red Dress signing 'Fever' and laying on the piano singing a sultry song to Odo at Vic Fontaine's! Woooo!

  • @RCrosbyLyles
    @RCrosbyLyles Před 9 lety +39

    Smart lady. She totally nailed it in all aspects. One word, Deep. Deep character studies, ideas, twists that took a while to get. True also that a lot of ST fans didn't get DS-9 then, but are rediscovering it now on NetFlix. The show pushed boundaries left and right. The writing, acting, and production was pretty much spot on, every show. Armin Shimerman said on another interview that He thought this was the best of the Star Trek franchises, which sounded a little arrogant until I thought about it. He was right, DS-9 was the best in every aspect. If a Sci-fi show can bring a tear to my eye on more than one occasion, something must be going on. Cheers!

    Nana was a last-minute fill in for Avery when he couldn't make it to a ST convention I was at last year. Kira is one of my favorites on DS9 and I was just really jazzed I was able to tell her (and Terry / Dax at the same time no less!) that their work helped make DS9 the best of all Treks for me by far.

    Love her, I was always a fan and always never understood why so many trek fans didn't like DS9, online forums and comments and message boards filled with anti DS9 meanness... but we were out there, us "niners" as some call themselves. I saw (and vhs recorded) every single episode, I read every single novel, and I petitioned for a movie. I have deep love for the characters and plotlines, it was the deepest most 'real' of all the series', she sums it up well, the great streak of grey. So many grey shades. I remember crying my eyes out when the Q'ost amogen in Dukat, killed Jadzia; when Benny collapsed screaming "IT'S REAL!", when Kira ran to Odo's quarters while he was with the female changling when Rom was being arrested, beating the door chime and asking him where the hell he'd been, shocked and incredulous. That show brought out the emotions, moreso than anything else at the time. sigh.

    • @cameraman655
      @cameraman655 Před 6 lety +11

      I agree and I always thought that DS9 was leaps and bounds ahead of TNG with plots, character development, and just good old fashion entertainment value. I would passively watch Picard and the Enterprise diplomatically and per Federation/Star Fleet regs, resolve disputes with an occasional battle scene with stupid looking aliens, cheesy effects, eh.... it was alright. DS9, however, was a whole different animal. Right out of the gate, the hatred that Sisko had for Picard in the premiere episode, set the tone. Because of it's wild west outer space frontier feel, dark and edgy storylines, I was hooked and bear in mind that at the time I was not much of a SciFi buff.

      @wglowrey1 Před 6 lety +10

      I just rewatched The Visitor a few days ago. I still cannot make it through that episode without waterworks. The pure love Sisko and Jake have for each other is one of the best examples of a father/son relationship in television history.

    • @captaineveryman6589
      @captaineveryman6589 Před 5 lety +4

      DS9 was a beautiful intoxicating ride! It's tragic that so many Trek fans were oblivious to it.

    • @watermelonhelmet6854
      @watermelonhelmet6854 Před rokem

      DS9 was a slow burn. It took a while to get going, and in a franchise known for "Adventure/planet/monster of the week" A show that was more about the interpersonal relationships between a group of characters in one place... it was a good show, but not what people necessarily wanted and expected when it started.
      I'll be honest and say I gave up on DS9 before the end of the first series. It was only when I went back much later that I appreciated it for what it was rather than what I wanted/expected it to be as a teenager.

    Nana Visitor's character on Battlestar was incredible! She is a very believable actor in anything she does. And Major Kira is a female role model for any age.

  • @MichaelStephenLordReserei1987

    I grew up with TOS (re-runs), VOY and ENT. I was never interested in TNG or DS9 when I was younger. But in probably the past half a year to a year, I've found myself being able to go back thanks to streaming and understand as well as appreciate the maturity of both - especially the darker tone of DS9.
    Besides the epic battles and truly magnificent arcs. My favourite characters are Weyoun, Garak, Jadzia, Quark, Odo, Kira and of course - Sisko.

      @@MKDumas1981 Star Trek Online (I played on a PS4) created a mission where the player and Kira (now the current Kai) go to the planet with Julian and heal her and the others. She's able to return to Bajor as the Kai, and Kira takes a Federation Captain role to help Odo and the Dominion fight the H'urq. I was so glad Rene was able to do this story line as Ambassador Odo before he passed away.

    • @cornelldgreen
      @cornelldgreen Před 6 lety +3

      Yep -- unlike so many haters, I *LOVED* the fact that it was a continuing, serialized story.
      Perhaps that was in part due to the fact that I was also a "Babylon 5" fan (a show to which DS9 is often compared), and partly because I grew up reading comic books and classic science fiction. I was ready for an ongoing story that took chances, offered a glimpse of the dark (a.k.a. - the *real life*) side of things and developed characters to a fullness and maturity over time.
      So glad the rest of the world, and particularly the Star Trek fan base, are finally catching up with us...!

    I like her attitude. She has a similar approach to James Doohan who played Scottie. He used to say the same thing, that he was just someone the fans could trust and someone to believe in and be seen as normal people. She must know after all those years that it’s the kids who didn’t always have the friends they needed or the contact they wanted with people, who got to know those characters and felt so close to them. Even as an adult after so many years, I feel like I could talk to any of those people and they would understand me.

    Nana was the highlight of the very first convention I ever went to; I've seen her at 5 events since 2007 and she's always an absolute joy to meet, such an incredibly friendly and welcoming lady. There's almost no other convention guest I've met who's as lovely as she is, and it's all so genuine. I saw her again at the LF&CC this year, where she remembered me, gave me a big hug when she found out it was my birthday, & followed it up with 2 more the next day. Best birthday ever. She's right about "10, 20 years from now, they'll get it". I enjoyed DS9 as it aired, but when I saw it 20 years later on Netflix, it was better than I remembered.
    I think a lot of the difference is the hindsight of watching the news during the war on terror. I understood the show better afterwards, but it was always great. So back in the 1990's, it was just better than I was capable of appreciating.

  • @butcherjsy8
    @butcherjsy8 Před 3 lety +1

    I eventually gave DS9 a proper chance many years after it came out, after initially hating it, but it quickly became my fave Star Trek of all, it's the deepest by far. It is a serial though, the other Star Trek's are much better to dip you toe in now and again, because they tend to be one off self contained episodes and everything resets back to normal by the next episode.
    Now it's not quite as much a serial as BSG, but it is much more so than TNG or Voy. For that reason, there might be more singular episodes that I return to again and again in those shows. But I always feel like I'm getting a far more nutritious meal with DS9, it just takes a greater investment, but it's well worth it!
    Nana comes across as so sweet and she still has such a beautiful and genuine smile, she is a talented actress and also showed her acting chops in a single episode of BSG, wish she had been a recurring character in that show tbh! It's interesting that the actress that plays Ensign Ro Laren was also in BSG, as she was originally supposed to be playing the character that Nana ended up playing in DS9 (albeit, they had to change a few things, like her name etc), I wonder how DS9 would've went with Ro Laren instead of Kira nerys?!

    HER SMILES LIGHT ME UP! Gahgabba, she's a sweetie. I did meet her once at a convention. Melted like Odo blubbering.

    I just binged all 7 seasons and it really is my new fav Star Trek show. It's actually listed as 2nd on the list of best Star Trek tv series after rhe original seriea, and that's why I tried it out. It truly is a great show that lives up to it's reputation.
    Oh and I have a queation- how in the world did she get back into that costume after giving birth, and look just as good if not better than before?

    Been two decades, my heart still burns for you, Nana.
    *Totally off-topic, though: Daniel Jackson's there being like, "Sam, is that you?"

    She somehow looks _younger_ here than she did in DS9, lol, must be the hair. Also she's right, I love Deep Space 9 now but absolutely *hated* it for years, I feel bad for not giving the show a proper chance before now. I think it's the most consistently well written, thought out, and deepest shows of the entire franchise

    Best STar Trek show by far. Just kept getting better each year, let the actors stretch their wings, so many different stories and angles. And the actors really liked working together!

    I JUST started watching DS9 a few days ago. I was a young man when it was first on-air. The writing and the acting was brilliant. I am really enjoying it. There's not such a happy-shiny filter on it like on TNG. All and all I'm really enjoying it. Sometimes I'm shouting at the TV.

    The show was ahead of it's time and set the trend for all SiFi shows that came after.
