D2R - Attack Rating Fully Explained (Hidden Mechanics)

  • Hello Guys and Gals Today I am going to go over the somewhat mystical Topic of Attack Rating and all of the hidden reasons why you can't hit the target.
    Attack Rating Formula Chance to Hit = 2 * atlvl / (atlvl + dflvl) * AR / (AR + Defense) ; multiply by 100 to get CtH in %
    The chance to hit has a lower cap of 5 % and an upper cap of 95 %. Thus, even if the formula returns CtH Greater Than 95 %, the chance to hit will be 95 %. Similarly, CtH Less Than 5 % will produce a 5 % chance to hit.

    How to solve Attack Rating issues…1 play a caster character 😂 2 if u still choose to suffer get a weapon with ignore target defense on it and have some crushing blow or static field etc that can just chunk down monsters health when u do hit them 😎

      Ignore Defense does not work versus Bosses though.
      Be a barbarian and use a high level Battle Cry to reduce the Defense by 100%, works like a charm and versus every enemy in the game.
      UBER-bosses are level 120 though so you still wont hit all the time.

      Diablo has one of worst stat showing mechanic, where it does not give accurate data to player at all, does not give dps, rather "damage" which does not include things like attack and cast speed, deadly strike, crushing blow etc. Lets say you put jewel with 15% attack speed into your helmet, you go see your "damage" and its same number, you dont see how much did it affect regarding damage-per-second.

    • @nikzel
      @nikzel Před rokem

      It's really simple, just remove the AR part of the equation:
      CtH = 2 * Your Level / (Your Level + Target's Level)
      or rewritten:
      CtH = 2 * Your Level / ( 1 / (1 + Target's Level))
      So if your level = target's level or above, your chance to hit will be 95% (the maximum)
      This only applies to simple monsters, not bosses. So it's a great trait for builds that kill a lot of monsters, but not so great if you target specific named ones. You can read more on basin wiki.

  • @off-meta-michael
    @off-meta-michael Před rokem +2

    Been posting this around for about a year. Maybe one day they'll put it in a patch.
    Make a new Act 4 quest. Simply fetch a tome in city of the damned and turn it in to the repair merchant for 1000 flat AR on your character per difficulty level. This would then be like having dual angelics on. Would be a good start to helping melee and adding new content that doesn't fundamentally change the game.

    • @GGMentor
      @GGMentor  Před rokem +3

      I'd be ok with that, completely doesn't help casters, and would strictly help melee/ranged. 3000 Ar would be enough to allow the + Percentage on skills to take over without being too ridiculously broken.
      Although even if it was 250 per difficulty it would still help a ton.

    • @off-meta-michael
      @off-meta-michael Před rokem

      @@GGMentor I said 3000 because that's about what you can achieve from dual angelics AND some charms AND gear like 3 piece mavinas and atmas scarab.
      With demon limb and blessed aim on top of that you can get in the 90% range in terror zones while using the throw command, which has no inherent AR buff.

    • @leejordan001
      @leejordan001 Před rokem +1

      If you move your cursor above your defense it shows the chance of block. 75% is max. With a paladin allways put at least one point into holy shield cos it elevates you block chans a lot so you dont need to put too much into dexterity. It also reduces your block animation which is insane.

    unrelated to AR but something i have been playing with recently and would be cool if you know more about it... basically as a physical attack druid, (fury werewolf) i struggle with physical immunities, especially when they're fire immune as i have some spare skills in Fire claw, but not enough to make a dent on fury's attack speed.
    i have found though... using glimmershred flying axe and a tiamats rebuke shield i can get a base ~5260DPS with a mix of lightening, fire, cold there's also 7k dps from physical but that's irrelevant..
    it dwarfs my ~30k dps on my main weapon but is there any further way of buffing this rather than building into fire claws?

    Um this was very insightful. But how does necromancer summons ar come into play? With there ar and "lvl they have..

    • @GGMentor
      @GGMentor  Před rokem +3

      For skeleton summons it is a mix of skill level and Character level.
      diablo2.diablowiki.net/Necromancer_Summoning
      It's difficult to list it all but some is listed here.
      Moral of the story with skeletons is their AR is garbage, so things like an enchant Merc, conviction aura, or inner sight help them greatly by increasing to hit chance.

    • @Lightning_Lance
      @Lightning_Lance Před rokem +1

      iirc, multiplication and division is in the same step in pemdas (even though it's two letters), and all the addition is in brackets. So whether pemdas applies or not doesn't make a difference here, just go from left to right.
      Also it wouldn't make sense to multiply before dividing in this, because then attack rating would be lowering your chance to hit instead of raising it, that doesn't make sense

      Do explain I am always willing to learn

    • @127Nomis
      @127Nomis Před rokem

      @@GGMentor Percentages are always multiplicative. +X% in diablo 2 means that the value needs to be multiplied by (1+X/100). X is divided by 100 because it is a percentage, and the added 1 corresponds to the base value (when you have +0%, you multiply by one, therefore the quantity does not change).
      In your first calculation, around 3:40, you take the example of a character who has 100 base attack rating and +1000% attack rating. In this case, the total attack rating will be 100*(1+1000/100), which is 1100. The formula 100 + 1000 that you are using gives the correct value in this case, only because the base attack rating is 100, but if you use it for different base AR values, you will get incorrect results. For example, a character with 500 base AR and +1000% AR will get a total AR of 500*(1+1000/100) which is 5500, while your formula would give a result of 1500.
      Another formula that you display at 14:00 give a wrong impression. It looks like you are implying that when you have a 95% chance to hit an enemy with 75% block chance, you will hit 20% of the time. This is incorrect because percentages needs to be multiplied, not added or substracted. The correct formula for chance to hit in this example is: 95/100*(1-75/100), which is 23.75%.
      A way to demonstrate this last formula is to take a character with 75% block chance in the blood moor, where any monster will have a 5% chance to hit. If the chances were substracted, the monster would have -70% chance to hit, which would be rounded to 0. The actual chance to hit of the monster will be 5/100*(1-75/100), which is 1.25%. Give him enough tries and he will eventually hit you. He will miss 95% of the time, and you will block 3.75% of the time (which is 75% of the remaining 5%).
