    I just received the Q3 last week. I spent a day setting it up for my style of photography. I took it out and photographed a small wedding that was both indoor and out doors. The results were unbelievable excellent. This makes photographing weddings fun again. I’m so impressed with the Q3. One camera one lens, compared to a ton of equipment that I use to carry. For me this camera is a dream come true camera. On a side note I also have a Q2 monochrome and used it just for some very unique old school shots, and my clients loved them.With no exception I’m in heaven on earth. This camera has and will change the professional photographic industry for ever. As they say just buy one and see for yourself.

    I bought the original Q specifically for a planned long motorcycle trip. The Q is absolutely perfect as a tank bag camera, combining that fantastic lens with a solid but compact body. I currently use the M11, from which the Q3 likely gets its sensor, and I can only imagine how far the Q has progressed from the wonderful first generation. This also bodes well for an SL3 at some point, incorporating the hybrid autofocus technology. Best wishes for your recovery following your second surgery, and thanks for sharing this beautiful imagery.

    While I'm not a Leica owner, nor do I lust after Leica gear, I'm curious about the Q3. I very much appreciate this non-hype video about the Q3 launch. I clicked skeptically (YT algo brought me here), but I stayed 'til the end of you sharing your thoughts (one of the few that I have on this topic). Thanks for your clarity and grounded video essay. I really do appreciate it! 😊

    I am absolutely intrigued by the Q3. I have a Q2 and have to say that capturing moments with it has been the height of my amateur career. It is a dynamic system that is ioncredibly simple, yet complex and the camera is beautiful. Leica for life.

    Leigh, I hope your surgery went well. I just received my Q3. It was choice for three reasons. First - I can now use it for Astro. The Q/Q2 are limited in shutter speed/ISO combinations. No way to get 30 second exposures at ISO 3200. Q3 allows the photographer to use that amazing lens to its fullest. Second - yup, the flip out screen. Low angles are much easier. Third - Sensor upgrade improves ISO performance and allows capture at even longer crop factors. Thanks for all you do to help the community!

  • @Chitown9969
    @Chitown9969 Před rokem +8

    I almost bought a q2, but didn't pull the trigger as it wasn't all I wanted out of a camera. The flip screen just made this camera perfect - I also like the Panasonic feel of the focusing that they added. Panasonic is surprisingly a great camera and to add their focusing into this was great IMO. I am basically almost retired now and this may be the camera I will get for my retirement days. 😃

    Journey to Leica Q3
    I was a fairly early adopter of the Fuji X100 series (2013) as my EDC. Also, longtime Nikon shooter (D100, D300, D700, Z6II, Z9, Z8) as the workhorse/duty camera yet my everyday camera was the X100S then X100F then X100V until moving to Nikon mirrorless 2021. Tried several options with Nikon Z6II to make it the EDC, short primes, pancake lens, small telescopes but no option worked as well as the X100V. Bear in mind, the X100V had some annoying limitations, which is why I moved to mirrorless to address (auto focus and manual controls were chief among these). Since 2019, I have watch both the Leica M and Q series reviews and experiences. A dear friend and fellow professional photographer is a life long Leica shooter(mainly film) and has encouraged me to jump onboard for decades. So after the Q3 announced, I pre-ordered and am awaiting the experience. The 60MP allows good flexibility to crop/compose even with the wide 28MM lens (which, by all accounts, is excellent). The ergonomics are not as preferred (the wireless hand grip will help) but the manual controls allow fast changes and feel great. I am hopeful the Q3 tradeoffs and workflow will fit my desired use case. Thanks for the great review and tacit encouragement. Keep pressing forward. Cheers!!

    Thank you for this video. About a decade ago, I had a pretty bad car wreck that messed up my back pretty bad. It was no fault of my own, but it changed my life forever because carrying around my larger canon cameras, that I loved so much, became impossible. The last wedding I shot with my big beautiful beautiful 85mm F1.2 left me in tears by the end of it because I couldn’t even lift my arm on account of the horrible back pain. If I am going to delve back into Photography this is the only camera I can buy.

    @daviddb4858 Před rokem +2

    I have tried out the Q and Q2 in the past and I love the size, weight, balance, and the overall "feel" of holding it and working with it. My only problem ever with the Q line of cameras is the fixed lens, since you would need to replace the whole package every time there is a new upgrade, instead of holding on to the lens and getting a new camera body. So I never sprung for one. However, each new version of the Q gets more and more tempting. I like the crop to 90mm, but I don't yet see anywhere what the megapixels count would be for each of the crop values (35, 50, 75, 90). Still, it looks like a great EDC (everyday carry) camera, as long as you have a nice bag or satchel to carry it around in.
    Get well soon.

    • @swampscott2670
      @swampscott2670 Před rokem

      Cropping and using those other lenses are too very different things. If this camera came with a 50mm (or maybe, just maybe a 35) I’d want one. 28mm is useless to me personally.

    • @daviddb4858
      @daviddb4858 Před rokem +1

      @@swampscott2670 There is no comparison between a prime lens or even a zoon lens and cropping. My interest in a Q3 would be for an EDC, not a dedicated use camera. I use wide angle lenses a lot.

    • @gregorybeale
      @gregorybeale Před rokem

      Megapixel count is something like:
      28 mm=61
      35=40 or so
      50=30
      75=16 or so
      90=7
      I think I saw this breakdown on petapixel..which used to be DP Review.
      I don't think the 90 was needed at 7 megapixels but wow...what a camera!
      Hope you feel better soon and thanks for your insights!

    Oh gosh, Leigh. I'm loving my Z7 with its nifty 50mm MC (macro) lens BUT shouldn't I have a fine, Leica camera in my life once! The first time I saw a Leica was in 1970 at Forester Pass on the John Muir trail. I was carrying a Nikkormat FTn with a 50mm f/2 and a 200mm f/4 (both still in my film camera box) and a hiking group passed me carrying a Leicaflex SL. Now I'm carrying a Sony RX100 VI while hiking but I am a point in life where I will hike slower and observe more. I think the Q3 could replace my RX100 while out hiking, and if weight is a problem, I could leave at home a sleeping bag or leave a tent or take less food.

    1. All the best for you regarding your back. 2. I love my Q and wouldn't upgrade to Q3 because I think the Q has the cleaner design and upgrading is expensive. But the sensor and battery update would be nice.

      One thing I may not have mentioned in this video is how Leica cameras do last. I don't feel that I need to purchase the newer versions every time one becomes available. I'm completely happy with my Q2. :)

    as a Q2 owner, i am excited about the possibilities of what SL3 can be, given where Q3 is now. the Q3 is obviously better than Q2, i just don't feel the need to upgrade my gears at every new generation.
    simply put, the difference that a Q owner will feel when should they buy a Q3, would be huge. This is what i am looking forward to, when i buy the Q4 or Q5. Having said that, shortly after i bought the Q2, i knew i would eventually go into the SL system. Following my logic, it made less sense for me to buy the SL2, right after Q2. So i knew i was going to wait for SL3. For this generation, i believe my budget will go to SL3, and in the future, i will toggle betwne upgrading these 2 ranges - assuming i did not end up buying a M12 or some M camera.

    This is a great review. Although the focal length of the lens is what I love, having a Leica seems to be more about status rather than photography. If you have 50 prints made by 10 different cameras and only one of the prints is made by Leica, whatever the model, and you can immediate point out which print is Leica, then the purchase of it is justified. Sure, no one can argue that the camera is not attractive; for the large price tag, this is the least Leica can deliver. And of course, the red dot gives a lot of bragging right, if impressing others matters to the photographer.

    I’m with you on the aesthetic.
    The step back in industrial design really disappointed me as well.
    I get why, but I feel like the Q3 is already the most “dated” feeling body out of the 3 Q’s, and it’s not even out yet.
    Part of the price tag is for that design aesthetic.
    The lack of internal memory and audio in was also a big miss, especially since adhering to design was no longer a constraint, no excuse to not bulk the body even more and check all of the boxes.
    I’m much more excited about picking up a well loved used Q2 now, much more than I thought I’d be.

    Thank you for sharing this video. I have placed an order for a Q3...and I expect it will take several months to get it (if not longer). I am trying to figure out what photography means for me - the cameras have become so perfect and easy to use that I sold everything and I'm now using a Leica MP with one lens (a 50 Summicron) and I'm shooting one film (Illford HP5/400). Maybe I'll have an answer by the time I'm able to finish the order.

    • @LeighAndRaymond
      @LeighAndRaymond  Před rokem

      What an interesting question - "what photography means for me." It is so easy to get carried away with all of these amazing cameras and lenses being introduced but minimizing with something like the a Q body or your MP with a 50mm can be much more enjoyable than having an entire bag full of the latest bodies and lenses. :)

    Okay, I tried the Q3... but it's not for me. What I want when I photograph is to compose my picture at capture, not by cropping afterwards. So I need a compact with Zoom AND excellent lens quality (as good as the sum micron 28mm f1,7 ??). What would you recommend?

  • @atthelord
    @atthelord Před rokem

    Hey, so I’ve never owned a Leica before and will be moving from a Nikon D800. Would you suggest going for a Sony A7RV with a prime 35 f1.4 or instead go for a Leica Q3 for a similar price? I’m a hobbyist photographer and mostly do general photos and product photos (watch photography). What do you recommend?

    • @LeighAndRaymond
      @LeighAndRaymond  Před rokem +2

      That's a big question because the two will be completely different in terms of capability and usability. I would recommend thinking if you want the option of interchangeable lenses and I really recommend going into a shop and trying both. That will be the best way to determine which is right for you. :)
