- February 16, 1977 was a dark day for the Oryema family. When their father was arrested on the afternoon of that day, together with Archbishop Janani Luwum and Charles Oboth-Ofumbi, the Minister of Internal Affairs, little did they know that they would never see him again. Some family members were smuggled out of the country on that day. Oryema had been in government service since 1939 in the colonial days. By the time Uganda gained independence, he was the Inspector General of Police. His death at the hands of President Idi Amin’s soldiers is an indelible stain on the country’s collective conscience. GILLIAN NANTUME spoke to Oryema’s family about the events of those dark days.
