I live in the tropics so all this talk of wool sweaters and overcoats loses me. It is too hot to wear those almost all year. I would love an affordable style essentials for people who don't live in cold climates.... for people who live where there is humidity and extreme high temps 3/4 of the year.

Classic clothes are great for people who never want to thinks about clothes. Been wearing the same clothes from the same retailers for 40 years. My favorite winter coat is 36 years old and people always comment on it. I'm shocked you didn't mention the blue blazer. It is the exoskeleton of the wardrobe and is, for men, what the little black dress is for women. With khakis in the summer, and grey flannels in the winter you're dressed for any occasion except a black tie event. The only classic I never took to was loafers.

Agreed with all of this. Also, I haven’t worn loafers since childhood because I feel like I’ll slip out of them if I move too quickly. I want to have to option of hustling down several flights of stairs in a parking garage or walking quickly to avoid a coming rainstorm. My personal style is more “man of action,” and loafers feel like they’d hold me back.

I don't understand the love of olive chinos but I remember it from MFA back in the day too. They can look good with brown or grey tops, but I think outfits look better when you have a coloured top with neutral bottoms than the other way around. The foolproof way is to stick with bottoms in greys and browns (note the prevalence of grey wool and brown cotton trousers in classic menswear) and combine it with coloured tops. Green is just such an excellent colour for knitwear and outerwear that it would be shame to waste it on chinos. I also prefer jeans over navy chinos, since they work much better with navy tops, and the fading that occurs in dark cotton looks far better on denim.

What are your thoughts on this? I would appreciate ideas for how to style sensibly, but casually and practically. Thanks for the great content.

I mostly wear linen or wool-linen-silk, and you can get some amazing safari jackets or sport coats done for a decent price in Thailand.
The good thing about wool-linen-silk is that it doesn't wrinkle as much as linen but is almost as breathable.
I know a few good Thai tailors where I get linen suits, overshirts etc.
Try to avoid the Indian tailors, they are usually overcharging, and the quality is awful.

Your sports jacket is really nice. I almost picked up a light gray one at Uniqlo the other day, but then I noticed something. There was absolutely no padding on the shoulders. I've always heard that a sportscoat widens the shoulders and gives a man (the Illusion of) a better build. The coat was OK, but it made more sense to pay a little extra for something that'll look twice as good.

Nice advice except for the chinos (and what are car keys????). The examples you show look like yoga pants with belt loops. My take is that men should have nice trousers That are not blue jeans. When I was much younger I lived next door to a dry cleaners and my habit was to launder my trousers then take them to the dry cleaners for a press only. I was a regular and got great service. A kept a rotation going and normally had 24 hour service and the price was affordable. The take away is that modestly priced trousers can look great.

The only clothing items you really need are clean, well fitting jeans, chino's, or five pocket pants. A few polo's, not golf shirts, a couple button down shirts, and quarter zip sweaters. Add to these, clean oxfords, a classy, understated watch, and 90% of the other guys will look like...everybody else. All the best...Mark

Don't buy suede. Everyone keeps recommending those jackets, and while admittedly they look nice and are quite durable, those will give you more headache than you'll get pleasure out of sporting the garment.
For instance, imagine you're going to a restaurant, and you decide to sport your suede. Meanwhile, you got caught out in the rain...and pum...just like that your expensive jacket is stained and you can throw it out in the garbage. Also, you'll need to pay extra attention while wearing the garment so...not to stain in in any other way.
Sure, you can use protectors to mitigate the probable effects, but even if you do, there's no product bonification of full protection, and also...even if it does, you ideally want to grab your outerwear on a go, without having a 40 min preparation just so the jacket can be semi wearable.
I think buying a jacket in any literal and other material is preferable (whether it's organic ||| synthetic), while you can use suede strategically.
For instance, I have light brown pilot army tactical boots made out of suede and canvas. Sure they're kinda stained by now, but it doesn't ruin the aesthetic of the garment due to its military heritage.
As a matter of fact, the more I wear it, the better it appears, as beat-up boots add masculine connotations to the outfit (those are military boots, which are supposed to endure hard-wearing).
That's not the case with a jacket...you'll just earn yourself a nickname...such as "Stain".
      You don't want ballbusting.

I would also add a pair of chukka boots or some other kind of heritage boot. Boots look much more professional and stylish than sneakers but not as formal as regular dress shoes. You can find many high quality and comfortable options out there for a decent price.

Spot on. Boots can elevate a basic fit to the next level. I discovered Thursday Boots about 10 years ago and now own 4 pairs of boots, a pair of dress shoes and pair of dark cacao sneakers. Great quality and if you have smaller feet like me, they have boots and shoes starting at size 6, which I almost never find in these price points from other manufacturers. Their customer service is amazing as well. I had a small amount elastic in my chealsies coming loose and was a little worried but not freaked or anything so I sent them an email w/ a photo. They didn’t even hesitate and sent me a new pair - which I didn’t ask for but was very happily surprised by. But I digress…boots…do it…now.

Ah yes I've heard many good things about Thursday and I hope one day I'll own one of their boots. Their most popular model, the Captain, is a very nice profressional looking boot, much smarter looking than sneakers@@cgoebbert

I cannot wear loafers. They won't stay taunt enough to stay on my feet. I wear oxfords instead in two different colors; tan and brown. I recommend owning a good trench coat. With a zip out liner a trenchcoat can be worn year round in many different climates.i just donated my jeans. I wear chinos, wool and linen trousers with pleats.
