The old man reuniting with his son and family at the end always gets to me too. This silly film has so much heart to it.
A few facts for the film:
The reason that they didn’t realize Kevin was missing was because of the miscount at the van. his ticket was thrown away with everything else, and he ended up on the third floor.
John Candy completely improvised the story of leaving the kid in the funeral parlor,
The nail was rubber and Marv was wearing rubber shoes that looked like feet.
The ornaments were sugar,
The house is a few miles down the road from the one used for the film Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.
If you slow down the film when Old Man Marley hits Marv you will see it is actually a young man stand in to do it properly,
The studio was going to just use the original recording by Mel Tormé singing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, but he asked if he could come in a re-record it and he did,
The shot of the van coming towards Kevin was down in reverse,

True story: my late father would crack up just watching the trailer on TV. My sister came home from college for break and we took him to see it on opening weekend which was also Thanksgiving. It was packed!
We were in the middle of a huge theater, surrounded by little boys. There was a row of kids in front of us that were having a birthday party (matching shirts) and one of them almost made me have a stroke. I'll come back to him.
Anyway, you all know the movie, but when the third act started up, the whole theater exploded with laughter. It was friggin bedlam in there! However, no one laughed harder than my dad! He had the greatest laugh that ever existed! He was also very short and round. I was taller than both of my parents by the time I was 8 (I'm 5'4) by a lot. So this little boy from the party turned around, pointed at my dad, who was in his late 60's, and screamed, "even the big kid is laughing!"
I almost died from laughing. My sister laugh-cried herself into a bloody nose. It was awesome!
Flash forward to a year later when they released "Home Alone" on to video (for the kids out there, it could take years for a film to be released on to VHS back in the day) and my genius mother pre-ordered it for us. We hosted a "Come Watch Dad Watch "Home Alone" Party," which we had catered and 25 adults showed up, to sit with their backs to the TV, on the floor, just to watch my dad laugh.
Best. Party. Ever.
John Candy, who played on Planes, Trains,and Automobiles. Played in Uncle Buck with Macaulay Culkin, too.

Fun facts.
1) John Candy, who played the actor in the band (in the van) is also a Canadian, who played on the Canadian TV Show, Second City. The mother (Catherine O'Hara) also a Canadian, was also on that TV Show. They were friends until John's passing (RIP).
2) Daniel Stern (Marv) did most of the stunts himself but the greatest one was when (Macaulay Culkin) Kevin puts the tarantula spider on Daniel's face was NOT an act. The camera man had one chance only to get this right as Daniel was extremely scared of spiders and when Macauley puts the spider on Daniel's face, it was not an act. His reaction was sheer terror and of course, that part stayed in the film.

This and Home Alone in New York are my every year movies since i was a little kid this movies just make me feel good
If you watch very carefully even if you have to slow it down but the girl that counts heads counted herself twice, once as #3 and then #11. She did count the other kid as #9 then went 10 on another kid and again herself as 11.
Kevin's booby traps and the burglers' inept attempts to get inside and ransack the house remind me of the Tom and Jerry short films from the 1940s. Also, Daniel Stern (Marv) was terrified of spiders, and only agreed to have the tarantula on his face with the condition that it be done in one take. His petrified scream was 100% real (not done in ADR).
You should also watch "Home alone 2. Lost in New York" It's even more fun
I love it. "Balls and Gaully."
Other christmas movies i watch this month of december is. A christmas carol from 1951, surviving christmas, four christmases, die hard 1 and 2, lethal weapon 1, trading places, the ref, the night before, gremlins, krampus, bad santa 1 and 2, scrooged, and such..

I have a going on 6-year-old who is obsessed with this movie. He is a lot like Kevin and I think that's why he likes it so much. I knew every word before he was born, but I think in the last couple of years I have seen it more than in the rest of my life combined.

If I could recommend a film, I think you’d love “the exorcism of Emily rose”. A lot of people think “oh god another exaggerated demon-based horror film” but it’s actually very original, majority of the film takes place in a courtroom with a priest on trial for negligent homicide since the girl he cared for wanted religious treatment rather than medical, with the film showing both the religious and scientific side of the story, possession vs mental illness, and allowing the viewer to decide for themselves. Massive underlying theme of faith too since the priests lawyer that represents him struggles with her faith throughout the film and you get to see in real time how the case changes her perspective on things. Definitely worth a watch ❤
