/ strange.garage Here is the quick and easy way to install new battery terminals in your car or truck. Always be careful when working on live batteries, and ask for help if you need it!
What my mechanic shop told me would take them 1/2 hour to do, and cost me $80 ~ took me less than 15 minutes & less than $6 to do myself! Thank you SO much for your tutorial!
The shop might do a more thorough job (check things out etc.) Also their time estimate has to take into account unexpected issues. They'd prefer to over-estimate than under-estimate.
@TM-fx5le - quoting $80 on 1/2 hour labor and a few dollar part is the thought process of someone scaring away business, especially when a novice can do it in 10 or 15 minutes and without a lift or special tools. I understand there has to be meat on the bone but that's breaking the bone and sucking out the marrow. Had he quoted $50, maybe he would have made $50 and found a repeat customer. Mechanics need to accept that the information age has devalued their service under some circumstances when it comes to the easy jobs. Fair quotes can turn easy jobs into bread and butter, especially when they don't necessarily even need to drive the car into the bay, lift etc. Conversely, internet word of mouth can keep the business flowing with honest shops.
I'm a 64 y/o woman who knows nothing about mechanics. I bought the terminals, watched your video several times and did it myself on the very first try. You saved me about $75! Thank you
You know when you get a perfect tutorial video, when in 3 minutes you have everything you need to complete your own repair with confidence. Great video - superb audio - perfect description of what to do. Thank you! I'm so used to seeing dark videos, where the person has their hands covering what they need to show, and they sound like they have a microphone across the room under a pillow. Perfect!
This is why I scrolled until I found a video that was less than 4 mins, whereas the others 10+ mins. Now I haven't replaced the terminals YET but I am sure I can do it!!
@@StrangeGarage grown woman here how about the post themselves? Do you have a video on this please and thank you for the one above I already knew that none the less it was a great video much appreciated but a lot of people don't know to turn the car off first you'd be surprised
@@StrangeGarage oops I forgot also it looks like you might have a foreign car there not sure though I have a Toyota 02 and I've got some questions I've got some bizarre issues and nobody in their brother these days at any and all parts stores can't even help perhaps maybe you can answer a question or two for me if you have the time
My vehicle came with a crazy corroded terminal, battery dead once a month. I'd never changed a terminal before and this tutorial got the job done. Thanks!
Hey Strange Garage, just wanted to say thank you for this. You demonstrated the job in such a way that even someone with zero experience could pull it off. Have a happy new year!
Now that is the kind of tutorial I love. Simple, short, and totally useful. Intro was great also sometimes the problem can be fixed by hitting it on something.
Thank you! Seriously, I'm a single mom and do as much of my own auto repair as possible but this one was terrifying me. I've been struggling to figure out if my plan to fix it was the correct way to fix it. Thankfully your video confirmed what I thought and I can finally fix this corrosion damage!
@@bigmacdaddy1234 have some respect man. Being 23 my generation doesn’t even know how to do an oil change. All the guys I know besides like 2 of them wouldn’t even be able to do this. It’s cool to see more people especially single mom working on her own car. And yah it is somewhat terrifying because do something wrong and you could hurt yourself or break parts of the car.
Thanks. My positive terminal won’t tighten down and I was freaking out because I knew I wouldn’t be able to squeeze hard enough to put on a new one like the factory connection. Your video showed that I won’t have to. Thanks for taking the Boogyman out of it for me. (66 yr old grandma) On my way to the parts store. Thank you!
Too my car to get the battery changed since the bolts where not coming off, was told i needed to strip the wire and get a new negative terminal, i didnt understand the guy at all and felt pretty intimidated dealing with cutting the wires, but after watching this video i now feel pretty confident about doing
Thank you so much, my car wouldnt start and had been having connection problems for a year and went through batteries and having to get jumps to having to move the battery at times when it didnt start to this. It took me 4 days and felt like giving up on my car completely but remembered the dream i had last night of me fixing my car and it starting and sure enogh it did. It was the best feeling to know i saved money and was determined to do it myself.
I loved it also. straight forward, easy to understand you...I find some people mumble. I also find some people like to lag on getting started so you can see that they work out and have a cool haircut...not interested. So, I really like you and the best part is you are RANDOM! I'm looking forward to watching your 'whatever' 'goofoff projects'. I am the same :)
The package for these terminals says they are for temporary use only, and they will corrode as much as the ones you cut off. So, unless the old ones are REALLY in bad shape, they will work as well are the new ones, once the corrosion is cleaned off. Still, you did a great job here and with your other videos. Thanks.
Once the oem terminals are so badly corroded, they should be replaced. If the replacement terminals corrode after several years, it's easy enough to replace the terminals again.
I agree. Looking at the video it appears to be a Toyota that he is working on. If the positive cable terminal is broken and needs to be replaced you can get a new terminal without cutting the cable just unscrew the nut. On the 1988-2006 Toyota Corolla's the part number is 90982-05035. It's faster, easier, and not a temporary fix. This style connector is also used on Nissan cables. Happy Motoring. .
I'm doing mine tomorrow. I bought my battery today, but I don't think it's putting forth the power needed to start my Jeep. Whether that's the real problem I'm having or not, it's something that's going to need to be done soon. This looks so much easier than I thought.
Glad to be back. I'm just slowing down a little. I only want to do videos that are good instead of making them just to make them. Thanks for watching brother.
Thank you for the tutorial. I’ve seen other videos online but none of them showed you how to actually put the cut wires in the new terminals. Your video did! I’m truly grateful. I do have a question, what happens if you don’t have enough cable to cut? What do you do then?
The wires can sometimes be replaced or "spliced". Best left to a professional honestly because it's going to require a lot of tools. You should have enough wire though.
Hello, I need to change terminals and battery in my 2004 nissan murano. I noticed that the positive terminal has a bit more screws? Can you show how to change that one, please
Awesome tutorial! I am trying to replace the positive battery terminal connector for my 2011 Altima but the bolt/nut is stuck on. I have tried WD-40 and PB Blaster but didn't work. Help! I have new connector and want to replace it asap.
I'd definitely use some steel wool along the exposed cooper strands (moving towards the ends). Make the copper shine so you get an excellent connection under the clamp.
Awesome Tut. I swiped mine exactly like this and now blew my blinker fuse... Changed the fuse blew it next day along with hazard fuse. Any advice? Didn't have issues before the swap
Awesome, thanks for the video. I'm having this issue right now. I replaced my battery but the terminals keep corroding and sometimes my car won't start and I have to get under the hood.

Everybody complains about this, but how else do you think they make their money?
Should us mechanics just shut down our businesses??
@@TM-fx5le just charge like 50 instead 🤨
@@sxempv2978 That’s the thinking process of somebody who doesn’t make money being a mechanic 😉
