- Let's be honest, the stock steering wheel in your Miata is probably a bit boring. A steering wheel swap is an easy way to fix that! In this video, Kyle Tigar installs an Enhanced Steering Wheel from Cipher Auto into a 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata.

The steering wheel is one of your primary points of contact with your car. It's amazing what a difference you feel by changing it out. Unfortunately, that usually means losing the air bag and that's more than most people are willing to do. It also means losing all the on-wheel controls, which is just not cool.
Enter Cipher wheels! These quality wheels are a direct bolt-in replacement for your stock unit and retain your stock airbag and controls. They're not just stock replacements, either - the wheel is contoured to be exceptionally comfortable and has a very slightly flattened bottom for a bit more leg room. The real leather feels great under your hands and the cross-section of the wheel is slightly thicker for better grip. The overall diameter is the same as stock other than the flat bottom.

Thanks for a great install video! I have had a new wheel sitting in its box for over a year out of fear of screwing this diy! Thanks to this posting I will feel much more comfortable!
Getting my ND Thursday! Just ordered my very first part from FM. So excited!!
Thanks so much! We're sure you'll love your new Miata!
Good Job Kayle!!! Thanks for another Great Video! Best Always,
Used this video today to help install my new Guardian Designs wheel. Very helpful & made the process smooth and relatively quick. Thanks!!
Glad we could help!
Just used this video to install my wheel! Awesome walkthrough. Took me around 45min. Hardest part was taking off old trims from old wheel. Only extra step I would recomend and I took was to remove the air bag fuse for extra saftey. I do not notice anything off with the allignment. Great upgrade. Im useless with all these things and was able to DIY it so you can do it too!
Thanks for the feedback, glad the video was some help!
Very well explained. I really appreciate your effort. Looks not that difficult as I imagined. 😊👍
This was a great help. Did end up with slightly off center alignment. Not a big deal and will do front end alignment eventually.
Thank you! It helped me a lot! I would only recommend to start plastic removal from back black part, it is easier.
Great vid. One thing though; when doing any such work on a vehicle where the ramifications of the negative terminal swinging back and touching the negative post on the battery is huge, it is best practice to cover the neg post with one of those plastic post covers/caps that usually come with a new battery. Only then can you be be sure of no contact.
Great videos guys, got myself
An nc, minty condition. The
Bilstein dampers, and eibach
Springs are a bit baggy though.
Might go with HKS or ohlins.
Steering wheel looks a step up..
👍
awesome video
Video was over by the time I found the 10mm 😂
😂
Would love to see an NA guide. I’m stuck with the wiring and I have no idea how to complete the job.
Thanks for putting this video out! I still managed to break three tabs. Sigh. Oh well
Looks to me that it would be a good idea to keep the OEM steering wheel but at least I have some idea what is inside.
I'm gonna install the Cipher steering wheel in my NA tomorrow on a Saturday.
Hey guys. I'm still a year or so away from my graduation present to myself (a new ND Club) and am learning so much with your videos. Thank you and keep up the great work.
I have heard a lot of mention that the paint is very thin and prone to sun damage on ND's. Is this accurate and do you have recommendations such as UV resistant clear coat or anything along those lines? Thanks in advance!
The metallic Mica colors have a reputation for being thin and prone to chipping. A high quality PPF film is probably your best bet to prevent chips while driving.
not kidding PPF is your friend, also keep in mind aluminum top (RF) , hood, trunk. Don’t be parking your baby under a walnut tree :)
Awesome tutorial
I gotta do this for a guardian designs wheel but I guess all the steps are the same
They should be very similar for any aftermarket wheel that keeps the buttons and airbag. :)
Tks for video
You are welcome!
Thanks. Is the new steering wheel smaller than the OEM? Where can i buy it from? Cheers❤

I want to order the same wheel with blue stitching from your website, will this fit a 2020 RF?
Yes, it will fit a 2020 RF. :)
The blue variant is being discontinued, so you'll need to take advantage of what we still have on the shelf!
Do you have to remove the fuse for the airbag too? or is it not necessary as long as I disconnect the negative terminal. Also, is this process the same for an automatic nd with paddle shifters as well?
As long as you disconnect the battery and discharge the electrical system as mentioned in the video, you wouldn't need to remove the airbag fuse. I'll have to reach out to Cipher to see if the auto paddle shifters could be brought over.
@@FlyinMiataVideo Thank you so much for replying, please let me know if the paddle shifters can be transferred onto the Cipher auto Enhanced Steering Wheel (D cut)!
Can you remove the silver pieces without removing the entire wheel to paint them ?
Boy, you might be able to but I think it'd be easier if you remove the wheel. Thanks for watching.
I broke one clip of one control. What kind of glue could I use?
Not knowing how bad it is....superglue works pretty good on plastic fasteners.
Can someone please let me know if the paddle shifters can be transferred onto the Cipher auto Enhanced Steering Wheel (D cut)?
We're still waiting to hear back from Cipher on this. Sorry for the wait.
From Cipher, the mounting holes are the same as OE so, there shouldn't be an issue using it with an automatic car.
@@FlyinMiataVideoThank you so much for asking them and letting me know!! 🙏
330?
Question, is it normal to face greater resistance installing the new wheel vs removing the old? I finished the install of the new wheel, but was only able to get it partially on the splines before being unable to push it on with a reasonable amount of force by hand. Since I knew it was already aligned on the splines I used the nut to push it in with a torque wrench reading 10-15ft/lb until it bottomed out and hit the target torque. It just makes me nervous I effectively had to pressure fit the wheel. Anybody else have a similar experience with the install?
What you've described is normal for a Cipher wheel install. The fitment needs to be a little tight to prevent deflection of the steering wheel once it has been installed.
i was currently trying to install the cipher auto d cut steering wheel but when i try to mount the new wheel, it feels like something is pushing against the wheel and it is impossible to push it in fully, do u know what the possible issue is?
It's difficult to say without seeing your situation - feel free to email us some photos of your problem at support@flyinmiata.com
Hi, did you ever get an answer to this? Having the same problem
@@jgasser2020 Please email our customer support team and we'd be glad to help.
My turn signal stalk won’t auto cancel turn signal after I remove the steering wheel once
Reach out to our customer support team directly through phone or email, they might be able to help you trouble shoot the issue.
Had my new cipher wheel installed by Mazda dealer last week. The wheel does not line up properly so the alignment had to be done, it’s the truth. By the way, the cipher wheel from Moss Miata is FATTER and the feel driving is fantastic, totally recommend their wheel.
Thanks for watching!
Is it worth having your dealer do this for you? I wonder how much that would cost.
If you aren't comfortable doing the install yourself, it might be worth asking them. Some dealers won't install aftermarket parts, so you may need to find another alternative. We suggest reaching out to your local Miata club for installer suggestions.
How possible that the steering is unlocked without ignition ?
If you mean the turn lock that most cars experience when parked, the ND doesn't have this issue.
@@FlyinMiataVideo good to know. i will install next week!
Same thing for atomatic RF with shiftpaddles?
We assume this should work with the paddle shifters as well, but have not actually tried the install personally. As long as the paddle shifters don't attach to the steering wheel directly in any way, it will probably be the same basic install. Feel free to reach out to our customer support team directly if you have more questions! Thanks!
was it the same for the automatic?
@@seo_nd2 Yes, but you must remove the paddles and swap them llike everything else. Very easy. 2 screws each side
remove the black piece in the back first, then u can push out the pins, much easier
Thanks for the tip!
Does installing an aftermarket steering wheel void the warranty?
Fun fact. I’ll bet your electric power steering will now be off center. I did this installation a few months ago and the teeth on the steering rack didn’t line up with the teeth on the steering wheel exactly the same after installation and I tried it three different times. I also used blue tape and had everything lined up exactly as demoed in this video. Now I’m told that the only way to overcome that is to get an alignment done which I will be doing eventually, but I’ve been waiting for my Flyin Miata Stage 2 Fox Coilovers before I have the alignment done so that I don’t have to have it done twice. Hopefully you guys can get me my suspension soon so that I can get my steering and alignment correct again on my ND.
Sorry you had issues with the steering wheel alignment. It's very easy to get the wheel off one tooth, even using the tape and closely monitoring the alignment during installation. If it can't be centered using the teeth on the spline, then the actual wheel alignment is your best option to get it straight. For what it's worth - this car had no issues with the steering wheel being centered after installation.
Same issue with mine, it's like the insert in the wheels aren't all the same, it's off by 1 spline but ends up looking 5 degrees off 🙃
I am having exactly the same issue. I am using a Kenstyle steering wheel on my 2019 ND. It simply does not line up exactly. Like another guy said, it appears the insert is off by 1 spline. If you adjust even 1 spline, it throws the wheel off in the other direction. I am going to get an alignment done.
@@azierej…did you get the front wheel alignment done and did it bring the new steering wheel back to the original centered position?
I just changed my steering wheel but mine is 2007 everything is screwed in pretty easy
