  • Let's be honest, the stock steering wheel in your Miata is probably a bit boring. A steering wheel swap is an easy way to fix that! In this video, Kyle Tigar installs an Enhanced Steering Wheel from Cipher Auto into a 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata.

    The steering wheel is one of your primary points of contact with your car. It's amazing what a difference you feel by changing it out. Unfortunately, that usually means losing the air bag and that's more than most people are willing to do. It also means losing all the on-wheel controls, which is just not cool.
    Enter Cipher wheels! These quality wheels are a direct bolt-in replacement for your stock unit and retain your stock airbag and controls. They're not just stock replacements, either - the wheel is contoured to be exceptionally comfortable and has a very slightly flattened bottom for a bit more leg room. The real leather feels great under your hands and the cross-section of the wheel is slightly thicker for better grip. The overall diameter is the same as stock other than the flat bottom.

    Just used this video to install my wheel! Awesome walkthrough. Took me around 45min. Hardest part was taking off old trims from old wheel. Only extra step I would recomend and I took was to remove the air bag fuse for extra saftey. I do not notice anything off with the allignment. Great upgrade. Im useless with all these things and was able to DIY it so you can do it too!

    Great vid. One thing though; when doing any such work on a vehicle where the ramifications of the negative terminal swinging back and touching the negative post on the battery is huge, it is best practice to cover the neg post with one of those plastic post covers/caps that usually come with a new battery. Only then can you be be sure of no contact.

    Hey guys. I'm still a year or so away from my graduation present to myself (a new ND Club) and am learning so much with your videos. Thank you and keep up the great work.
    I have heard a lot of mention that the paint is very thin and prone to sun damage on ND's. Is this accurate and do you have recommendations such as UV resistant clear coat or anything along those lines? Thanks in advance!

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  Před 2 lety +3

      The metallic Mica colors have a reputation for being thin and prone to chipping. A high quality PPF film is probably your best bet to prevent chips while driving.

      As long as you disconnect the battery and discharge the electrical system as mentioned in the video, you wouldn't need to remove the airbag fuse. I'll have to reach out to Cipher to see if the auto paddle shifters could be brought over.

    Question, is it normal to face greater resistance installing the new wheel vs removing the old? I finished the install of the new wheel, but was only able to get it partially on the splines before being unable to push it on with a reasonable amount of force by hand. Since I knew it was already aligned on the splines I used the nut to push it in with a torque wrench reading 10-15ft/lb until it bottomed out and hit the target torque. It just makes me nervous I effectively had to pressure fit the wheel. Anybody else have a similar experience with the install?

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  Před 5 měsíci

      What you've described is normal for a Cipher wheel install. The fitment needs to be a little tight to prevent deflection of the steering wheel once it has been installed.

    Does installing an aftermarket steering wheel void the warranty?

  • @leeraymer166
    @leeraymer166 Před 2 lety +3

    Fun fact. I’ll bet your electric power steering will now be off center. I did this installation a few months ago and the teeth on the steering rack didn’t line up with the teeth on the steering wheel exactly the same after installation and I tried it three different times. I also used blue tape and had everything lined up exactly as demoed in this video. Now I’m told that the only way to overcome that is to get an alignment done which I will be doing eventually, but I’ve been waiting for my Flyin Miata Stage 2 Fox Coilovers before I have the alignment done so that I don’t have to have it done twice. Hopefully you guys can get me my suspension soon so that I can get my steering and alignment correct again on my ND.

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  Před 2 lety +3

      Sorry you had issues with the steering wheel alignment. It's very easy to get the wheel off one tooth, even using the tape and closely monitoring the alignment during installation. If it can't be centered using the teeth on the spline, then the actual wheel alignment is your best option to get it straight. For what it's worth - this car had no issues with the steering wheel being centered after installation.

    • @dwane42
      @dwane42 Před 2 lety

      Same issue with mine, it's like the insert in the wheels aren't all the same, it's off by 1 spline but ends up looking 5 degrees off 🙃

    • @azierej
      @azierej Před rokem +1

      I am having exactly the same issue. I am using a Kenstyle steering wheel on my 2019 ND. It simply does not line up exactly. Like another guy said, it appears the insert is off by 1 spline. If you adjust even 1 spline, it throws the wheel off in the other direction. I am going to get an alignment done.
