My paternal grandmother recalled having the first bobbed hair in her area. It caused scandal when she returned from a school trip to Paris in the early 1920s with a "shingled" hairstyle

I kinda wish, we had such distinct names for haircuts still. Would make communicating with your hairstylist a whole lot easier.
I guess there's still some for a couple of the more "trendy" haircuts right now like the wolfcut or the butterfly cut but I agree!
My grandma told me that long hair takes your energy and shorter hair is healthy because it uses less energy. This wives tale was told to her by people of that era. So I wonder that might be why some nurses and women during ww1 and the Spanish flu cut their hair.

Over here we call the bob a “channel” haircut. I’ve used my hair short with bangs like this since I was a child. I love it.

I shaved my head 8 months ago and finally have a bob hairstyle!! I've been struggling to style it, not only because its shorter but because its all the same length. The 1920's has been my biggest hairstyle inspiration, I'm now rocking a 1920's "windblown" bob that is bright purple🎉 Got to get that Gen Z edge from somewhere💗💗
Before this at around the 4-6 month mark, I had an "Eton crop" hairstyle with pins on the side similar to yours in this video, with a little kiss curl. So sweet and got so many compliments!!

My dad always told us about three sisters in his small town named Ophelia, Dorcas, and Aurora…..for some reason we thought that was hysterical. Both my parents were born in 1929 and graduated high school in 1947. Love the history lesson.

I love the photos you've highlighted from the yearbook. Such a great dive into the Bobbed style with different face shapes, hair textures, and their glasses! I love the 'big choice' styles: The Pineapple and the Sweetheart!
Another thing I've noticed is how hairstyles popular in the 1960's emulates alot of these 1920's ones. Nowadays we've made a full circle and going short is becoming more popular especially among Gen Z

I absolutely adored this video, thank you for posting! Every time I go to the salon I show them bob photos from the 20’s of what I want and it never looks quite like it. I’ve since started cutting my own hair with much better results 😂 I’m going to use this video as inspo so my bff can help me shingle out the back.
This was so fun! My grandmother was born in 1908 and I have photos of her with her bobbed hair. I didn’t realize there were so many different cuts. I’m so enjoying your wonderful videos and tutorials.
Also like the pixie cut, with long side burns that you can curl or texturize. I call it the "Spanish Pixie".

During the depression era women were selling their hair to make things like hair shirts and bedding. It wasn't just horse hair.

Fun fact, the bob is named after Louise Brook's eccentric uncle. She went to get her hair trimmed and the end result looked like her Uncle Bob. She said "Oh no, you've given me the dreaded 'Bob' " and thus a name was born.

As of 6 minutes ago, i have in a fit of tears lopped off my hair. Ive never been happier. It even has a wierdly beautiful uneven angle to it but i love it so much. I feel so free, so wonderfully wild.

are tatoos really that much accepted? i guess it's no longer seen as a particularly masculine thing to do if that's what you mean. I would argue trousers are much more accepted
I was just on IG the other day where I saw a vintage-style model get absolutely pummeled by commenters about her tattoos, and she's not the only one either. That said, it is much more accepted in the west than it is over here in the east where I'm currently at. Here you can be forbidden from entering certain establishments (EVEN THE BEACH) if you have any visible tattoos. They claim that it's because of tattoos association with criminals and the mafia, but more "average Janes and Joes" have them today than criminals so I don't think that's entirely true.
I read an interview with a famous Japanese tattoo artist a few years back who said that while the majority of his clientele when he first started out were indeed the mafia, these days he very rarely see them anymore because they avoid getting tattoos because of the stigma surrounding them. You are more likely to see a tattoo on a popstar or your average young Japanese fashionista than you are on a mafioso.. Still, the stigma (and discrimination) remains.
Better yet; giving someone a tattoo is illegal in many countries (Japan and Korea being two examples). And I'm not talking your average person picking up a tattoo-gun off eBay and doing them in their basement, I'm talking trained tattoo artists with professional studios. (Because you "break the skin" when you do a tattoo, the law states that you need a medical license to do it, but let's be real; nobody is going to medical school just to become a tattoo artist) You still see studios around (some are hidden though - especially here in Korea) but there are regular "crack-downs" on them. There was a famous case in Japan some time ago where one tattoo artist finally decided to fight back and try to change the law. It's a very slow process though.
All that said, would I say that tattoos are "accepted"? Depends on your definition of "accepted" and where you're located.. But compared to the bob? Definitely not. I agree with you that pants would be a better thing to compare it to.
Yes. I am definitely telling this story from the perspective of the West. And trousers are a great example of something completely unacceptable for women becoming acceptable. But I feel like that was a slower transition. It didn't take one decade for trousers to become accepted. That was a battle women had to fight for many decades. My mom still couldn't wear pants to public school in the 1960s. I know a lawyer that had to wear a skirt in certain courtrooms well into the 1980s.
I don’t really have a “bob” cut. I’ve just always had really short hair. I guess Eton short. I know it’s been confusing to people my whole life why I would want short hair. I just know when I made that decision as a kid to have short hair I really became me.
Same. Short hair has just always suited my face better.
I’m a hairdresser you are forgetting the pixie by Mia Farrow ,Vidal Sassoon cut it …you’re forgetting Rachel from friends in the 90s the revamped shag which was still very famous in the 70s… come on girl do not settle for just the 1920s and 30s because every century rocks it!!! Just saying
