- a step by step video on how to convert your 1999-2004 mustang V6, GT, MACH1, and COBRA gauges to either LED or film changed color. this video gives you all the information needed to do it at home in about 1-2 hours for $10-$25.
If you get alligator clips and hook them to back of guages via a battery (have to disconnect back and circuit board) the recalibration setting is straight up. Put needles there and they are set to where they need to be.
Joseph Bentley awesome! Thank you for the knowledge.
Did this everything lined up except the speedo was off by roughly 8 mph at top dead center. Easy fix quick readjustment might just be my 02 stang but a heads up none the less
glad someone actually did a full detailed description of how to do this thank you for the video.
That headlight knob is a real PITA to get off!
Thanks for taking the time to SPLAIN all of this stuff
I didn't read through all of the comments and I apologize if someone else has mentioned this, but I wanted to put this out there. I've replaced several OEM gauge covers with aftermarket white face gauge clusters and I used a regular dinner fork to pull my needles. This allowed me pull the needles with equal pressure on both sides of the base. Just a different approach.
Getting ready to replace my bulbs to blue led in my 01 cobra. Going to do the HVAC and eventually replace all the bulbs with leds.
Hey just got a 2000 and I think it has the faces that hook up sepretly and as you said they cut out can I just do away with them
I have a 2004 Cobra, so my gauges are white. Will the blue colored LED bulbs show hotspots through the back of the white face gauges, with them being less opaque than the black face gauges? Maybe not sanding might have some effect on the dispersion of the light. Trying to avoid hotspots is all, or minimizing if possible. Also, 6500k bulbs correct?
Update.....
I swapped my cheap ebay LED's out for the expensive superbrightled.com ones. I can say they alluminate better, but do not adjust brightness as they stated on their sight. And do not but the "cool blue" they are really just white.
Dont mind the grammar errors.
Great video did everything as shown and it turned out great the first time thanks man !
Dod you glue them or what?
Im planning on messing with my 09 Fusion tomorrow and I was wondering if you could give me a name of the matte film sheet you used so I can order it. Im planning on doing my climate control too. Would I use the same stuff and the same steps? Also, you used a transparent film and you sanded off the green on the gauge plate, so how did it turn out blue? I'm just trying to get blue as well so I was just confused on what color film I should get. And what grit sand paper would you recommend to sand off the green film on the gauge plate? Nice tutorial by the way! I enjoyed it. Thank you
I used the clear matt film as a disperser. The new led are blue in color. If I did not sand off the green, they would just glow an off green color. For the sheeting, I ordered off eBay from a seller in Michigan. If you can't find a blue matt film, buy transparent blue, atleast 3 layers. Then put 1-3 layers of clear matt film.
any way to avoid having super bright areas using matte conversion? awesome video btw i will be doing this.
Any time you do an LED conversion, you going to have hot spots. The matt film helps disperse the light better. Other ways to do so would be to use bulb style LEDs. They won't be as bright, buy will disperse the light better. Or if your looking for light adjustment, you can pick up a set of ultra bright standard replacement bulbs and used colored film to change the color.
I used single surface mount LED's off eBay. But, I have found that they are very bright, but do not allow for brightness adjustment, and make hot spots in the gauges. I just ordered some upgrade bulbs that allow for adjustment and disperse the light better. Plus I'm doing an LED exterior light video tomorrow.

Thanks for the video. I know its been a few years since you posted it and you may not even have the car anymore but I have a question. I was told the bulbs were soldered into the socket in the 99-04 Mustangs and If I wanted to change them I'd have to cut them and solder in sockets from the 94-98 Mustangs. Is that true? Or is it just a socket I can toss some LEDs into. I have a 00 GT. Thanks man
I still have it. the factory bulb is crimped. I just bought a 25 peice set off eBay for $5. it's much more easy then trying to remove the bulbs and not crack the plastic insert.
has anyone tried pink yet without removing the film ? 😬
Have a question so if I were to just switch the bulb to like red without removing film would it be red or stay green? 01 mustang. Thanks enjoyed watching your video.
That would make a yellow color
when i set the needle on the speedo to the stopper im over 10mph. i took the stopper off, set it back behind that spot, put the needle back on, and im off by 3-5mph. do u have any suggestions?
I had to adjust mine a few times as well. what I did was leaving the plastic cover off the gauges along with the bezel. then drove with my phone GPS and adjusted it till it was right on. just make sure to only put the needle on very lightly so you can remove it more easily.
You said that one is aftermarket, how did you get the mileage back to the correct mileage when you replaced it
Bennett Slater just the clear cover and face are replacements. the electronics are all factory.
Did you ever do the switchback led turn signal??? i have a lincoln ls that takes the 3157bulb and i keep hering it needs 2 relays per bulb. just wondering if the 3157ck works or if the led relay makes them work
I have found that ford uses a weird set up for the front marker light. I have tried both the standard 3157 and ford compliance 3157. Neither worked. I have not tried the $75 raxiom ones, thats just too expensive. I simple got the two color (white/amber) and re pinned it. On fors for these years. if looking at the socket with the plug connector down. The lower right is the ground, upper right is low +, and both upper and lower left are high +.
So you need to use a 9v battery, remove the bottom plastic after straightening the wires, and figure out which wire is what. Then run to the correct socket and it will work. It wont do the switch back, but will stay one color during marker mode, then both under signal load.
ok so i have a 03 gt but i wrote to you on your cobra video and as you already know, the bulb sizes are different. so can you give me a link to red led bulb sizes that will fit my 03 mustang gt please thx
Sw lights
Can u please tell me what happena if u just swap out leds with out sanding cause i dont want to sand anything down i just wana swap leds to get a different color wouldi t work ?
The sanding removes the stock green color. The factory bulbs are natural bulbs (white light) and gets shaded green by the film you would sand if you wanted a different color. So if you wish to stay green, then do not sand. But if you want any other color you will have to remove the green coating first.
it works fine. I swapped the 5 normal bulbs for 5 LEDS and that is IT and it works amazingly and looks beautiful. Very bright blue, no green tint
yup superbrightlights FTW!
What grit sandpaper should I use to to sand off the green paint?
Greg Halbrook green scotch bright pads work great. otherwise 400 grit will work, just don't over sand.
Thanks, I was not expecting such a quick reply! :)
Greg Halbrook I try to respond as quick as I can. I moving right now, so I saw your question during a break. let me know if you need anymore help.
Where did you get the transparent? film because I want to tint my plastic rear window...thanks
platic rear window?
Yes...cause seems no one I know, knows
Please explain what "rear plastic window" you speak of? Did you replace the glass with plexiglass?
No, I bought the one piece convertible top with the rear plastic clear window for my mustang, there off eBay
Is it flexible or hard plastic?
i cant seem to find a good paper too use.. what can in get.. just like what you used ?
Are you speaking of the frosted clear vinyl?
If so, you can buy it at Walmart, Amazon, eBay, or craft stores.
Cricut Premium Vinyl - Permanent, 12” x 48” Adhesive Decal Roll - Frosted Opaque a.co/d/93USeYI
Hey what kind of transparent paper is it?
It's called adhesive vinyl transparent film. You can find it on Amazon, eBay, or via Google in a variety of colors, thicknesses, and transparencies.
hey man I have an 02 GT. i purchased red LED lights for my guage. it leaves hot spots. i want to disperse the light. can you send me a link to the right paper to use. and should i use red paper or clear white?
if you use clear matt film it will turn the red a pinkish color. you can find the film you need all over the Internet. eBay and amazon will have plenty. just look for "red matt headlight film?

+NOT SO SLIM JIM thanks man i appreciate it
+NOT SO SLIM JIM could u resend the link? for some reason the link wont work
Honestly, I bought cheap Ebay LEDs for my 98 mustang and put them in regardless of the green tint and now it is super bright blue. And I can even see the light during the day, whereas before I couldn't. Only took 10 minutes and my dashboard is Bright blue :D no sanding or dissecting of the cluster involved.. Edit: after reading some of the comments.. I feel bad for all the people who actually took the whole thing apart. Literally all I did was replace the bulbs with LEDS and there is no green tint
Congratulations, you are able to swap out bulbs. this video is obviously for people who want to do more then just stick some Chinese made led's in their dash and call it s day. but thanks for adding your opinion on how cheap and lazy you are.
+Fierce Recognition you do realize there are at least a dozen videos about how to just swap bulbs, right? If you believe it's your place to go on someone else's video and talk smack, why don't you make your own and explain why you think it's more simple your way? it's obvious the two methods end in different results, so allow people to use their own judgment in what process they want to use and the results they want. or, keep defending your unnecessary criticism.
+Fierce Recognition also, you do realize the 94-98 and 99-04 are two different guage clusters. the 98 has entirely different internals and lighting dispersion. little fyi before you talk smack, do your research first.
There's a difference between talking shit and giving advice, you're the one talking major shit, not him.
the changed the film to green in 2001 the 94-00 have blue film but with the stock lights its green so just bulb swap on 94-00 the 2001-04 you have to sand the film
Where did u get the transparent film ?
You can find it on Ebay or Amazon
could i put a gt speed gauge on a v6?
Yes and no. The gt gauges use the same plugs and is the same size as the v6 model. But the speedo and tach are different. It can be done, but will require you to get your ECU flashed by a custom tuner shop. Its really only needed if you're doing a gt/mach1/cobra swap. Which in that case would automatically work with the new ECU.
i wana do it just for looks i tried finding vids on to see if it would work im not a good mechanic tho
The gt gauges are identical to v6 gauges with the only difference of a hight speed and rpm range. If you are looking for esthetics, there are many companies that produce aftermarket gauge faces that will improve the look.
do you know any websites where i can find them at?
***** Americanmuscle.com latemodelrestoration.com ebay Amazon and dozens more
what kinda of sand paper
800-1000 grit works the best. But you can use 400-600 if your careful to not over sand.
Too much work. I'll leave my dash green.
Lol. They makes kits that is less work.
@@NOTSOSLIMJIM If so, I haven't found any. I was wondering if there were some aftermarket instrument panels that didn't have any tinting.

Thanks for wasting our time.
Man, not like this video is a decade old. You know, well before you could easily find dimable LED's and inexpensive color change gauge faces. Sorry that my video was made for people who had never done something like this before. I hope you turn to another channel in the future to meet your mustang needs.
Oh, and this one video has more views than your entire channel.... I guess some people thought it was useful.
@NOTSOSLIMJIM your right. The ebay clearance bin appreciates your 15yr old dumpster video for leading the moth army to colored lights lmfao
@@MustangV6TechSupport you're....
As someone who's looking to do this exact mod on their v6, this is the exact information I was looking for. The video's nearly 10 years old and still has great information front start to finish. If a video doesn't have what you're looking for just go back and find another one. No need to be an asshole.
