This is one of my favorite examples of strong male role models we had growing up in the late 80s and early 90s. Commander Riker could have clearly and easily kicked Picards *ss and he could have had his own command and ship if he wanted it, but there was such great respect for the captains chair and for the role of being the absolute best right hand man...he showed us you could take pride and earn respect from others by being the best at supporting someone that may be getting all the glory and all the credit. The real honor came from being loyal. He was always patient and humble. At the same time, Picard never abused his authority and treated Riker with dignity and respect in return and allowed for a friendship to grow and acknowledged how important he was.
I never forgot that dynamic. The take aways for me are this.
1. Everyone doesn't get to be captain and yet there's still a reason to take pride in your role, no matter what it is currently.
2. When you do become captain, surround yourself with the best number 1 possible, treat them with dignity and respect and you'll always succeed.
3. Good men show restraint when they are bigger and stronger and also when they are in a leadership role. In both cases being an a hole, or a jerk, or a bully is possible, but it's ugly and doesn't work nearly as well as taking pride in what you do, giving your absolute best and showing respect to those around you. Plus they both always got the hot girl they wanted, almost never lost a fight and lived happily ever after 😂😂😂
Now I want to see Jonathan Frakes and Ian McKellen on stage comparing notes on their experiences with Patrick.
So, at least from what I can tell from watching this, Mr. Stewart and Mr. Frakes aren't really playing their characters when they're bantering back and forth on Picard. They're just being themselves and I am totally here for it.
That last scene where they are all playing poker .... the camera kept rolling even when "cut" was called. You can see how much fun they are having, and the laughter is real.
I love that Patrick calls him Johnny. The bond between the TNG cast is so wonderful.
I think the TNG cast were the only ones that all got on really, really well. Voyager, 1st gen, and DS9 i think had a few tiffs etc.
@@procta2343yes they were and still are
@metalhead6526 The issues Will Wheaton had was predominantly with Paramount ST Execs not the Cast. If you watch interviews with the cast about the "Wesley Question" you will learn that they mainly all got on well.
Picard Season 3 was FANTASTIC!!!!
I adore Patrick Stewart. He is an actor's actor. I knew he was right for the Captain Picard part the first time I watched him. His stage presence is fantastic. I recently purchased his memoir and it's on my Kindle. I can't wait to read it. I love that deep, resonant voice. There's only one other actor that possesses that resonance and it's John Neville.
LOL!!! Johnathan Frakes is friggin AWESOME! RIKER NEEDS A SHOW!!!
Yes, Riker needs a show where he kicks everyone's butt! Just going on around the galaxy as a major ass kicker, like full Jack Bauer mode "SHIELDS!!"
titan??
Love these 2 people. Both big parts of my childhood and whenever I see members of the cast of TNG together it makes me happy!
What about your parents? 😿
The cast of TNG really do seem to have a comradery with each other. In another video I think it was Brent Spiner who said they were all on the same group text with each other. I would say this is rare in a lot of cases.
For a TV show to have all the main characters be friends like that is rear it's almost always some who have something whit some other
the story about "25 years in the royal shakespeare company for this!" cracked me up so hard..
In my opinion, my exquisite love for ALL of the STNG actors, writers, directors and especially for Gene Roddenberry and Sir Patrick Stewart. I can't imagine this lifetime without Star Trek and all the joy it's brought. And this is the first time I've actually felt so glad that I have CZcams. (I mean ... that's kinda crazy in a haha way!) Thanks so much for this video!
The one man Christmas carol, I was listening, because some time ago, someone had created a cassette tape of it's audio recording. (I bought it.) I was truly impressed by his skill, and even more so when I watched the next generation.
I can never really see these people as anything but Will Riker and Jean-Luc Picard and the the rest of the cast. They were a part of our lives for so long they have become 'real' and legendary. Totally SUPERB discussion!
Jonathan looks really good for his age. Patrick as well!
Patrick is timeless, Id love them to do one more star trek film.
The amount of ballbusting Frakes does to Sir Patrick is wonderful. 🖖❤
And Sir Patrick has that Brittish politeness where he doesn't do it back very much. lol
O I've seen him defend him selves don't take British politeness for a weakness he can have some pretty good comeback that Frakes have no defense for 😂
Some times it seems like they try to say something so outrageous that the other just loses its other tracks
But you can see it's done in good intention not maliciously of any kind
@@yvindwestersund9720 Oh, I'm sure he's quite capable of defending himself or retaliating if he wanted to, but that's part of quality I respect and admire in people. To be able to retaliate or cause harm in return, but not doing it precisely because, as you say, he understands that it's not done with malice or ill will.
@@Vulcanerd they are simply very good friends that enjoy and have fun together
And yes I do appreciate that in them both
@@vanmoodymate, Patrick is from North, we're very friendly chatty but will give you shit at the drop of a hat
The gulf between Stewart and his colleagues and Shatner and co. is light years wide. It's immediately obvious the affection is real, and deep. Love that.
Shatter is iconic, how dare you!!!!
Thank you for this! Love these two! They just feed off of each other, just a casual conversation like they are sitting around the camp fire telling old stories and so funny! Such a joy to watch! Hilarious! 🤣😂❤❤❤
This was awesome. Am I the only one who noticed how lovingly Frakes is towards Sir Patick? Make it so!!!
First time I saw Sir Patrick was in the film 'Excalibur' ⚔
if a BOY has been chosen , a BOY will be King
I have seen the cast kiss each other on the lips. You have to be deeply affectionate beyond the feeling of family and be in tune to love deeply like that with friends.
I think it's because he's French
neither of them are French. One is American, the other is a Yorkshireman. Yorkshire is not in France.😆@@JorisKoolen
@@jasonross8434 Haha I know, it was a Captain Picard joke
It's a theater thing. You see that often in those circles.
Not that these two don't love each other deeply, mind you.
The Gurney Halleck story struck a chord with me, because I actually hated the Dune movie desperately -- I saw it in a theater and hated every second, but I sat through the whole thing to get to the end credits and find out who played Gurney Halleck because this movie sucks but damn, that guy was GREAT! Who the h*ll is he?! And I saw the name and memorized it. Patrick Stewart! I don't know who he is, but he was great.
And then a few years later, the friend I had seen that crappy Dune movie with (a fellow Trek fan) called me on the phone in my dorm room and told me that I was going to love the new Star Trek show because "You know who the captain is? Remember that guy you liked so much in Dune?"
"Patrick Stewart?! OMG he's f*cking awesome!"
And he was. 🙂
I find it interesting that they were after someone who was less 'Marshall'. I need to try and find Stewart with hair to see what they were trying to imagine.
@@deon700 Look up his performance in the 1976 BBC Series "I Claudius", then go back to episode 1 and watch them all act their socks off.
This is fantastic. Not just an interview. Not just a conversation. But to genuinely close friends having a chat which e have the privilege of witnessing. Love it.
I saw that one man show too. It was simply awe inspiring to see.
Not just an interview. Not just a conversation.
But some kind of an inter-versation. Or maybe it was a con-view.
Nah, strike that. "Con-view" sounds terrible.
It was definitely an interversation, I felt.
If I'd never heard of Star Trek or these guys I'd still enjoy watching this !
Great discussion they had here! Jonathan Frakes was perfect for this assignment - he was LIT! 🤣 I can't shake the impression now that Frakes would be perfect in the role of a ruthless, egotistical and bitingly sarcastic villain! 🤣
The Captain & #1 Back Together Again...❤
This is fantastic. Such warmth and humour between them. I'm always really impressed with Frakes too - he seems like such a great communicator with easy going charm.
These two are the best together!
My absolute favorite Cap and his #1, both on screen and off!
Their work in S3 of Picard...I mean, it's beyond words.
Two extremely talented, intelligent actors sharing the world of acting. Absolutely delightful. Thanks all! And an extra hug, of course, for Sir Patrick....if you look up "charming" in the OED, pretty sure he'll be referenced in the definitions....Bravo!
( ps: too all you other struggling actors: .not sure how to handle a difficult or perplexing scene? No worries....just watch Mr. Stewart's work for an hour or two. It will ease your mind, and am willing to bet you'll find a way to adapt (steal!!) some little thing he does that will save your bacon....)
A wonderful interview and friendship between Patrick and Jonathan
This was a joy & a delight, thanks for making it available to us-what fun they are together :)
I only realized recently that the only time I saw Sir Patrick with hair was in the I, Claudius miniseries. He was Sejanus.
Yeah, I thought he looked like Alan Shearer with it
And that was a wig.
I saw a really good movie the other day with Patrick playing John Lear. It was a version of King Lear set in the old wild west. Brilliant!
and Colm Meanly was there too , so it must have been a holodeck session that Picard and O'brien shared together
I love you two. Thank you for everything. Really hope you decide to keep going. Ride it till the wheels fall off boys😎
What a fantastic conversation - this was clearly two friends talking and Frakes should do more of these. Thank you!
Only thing that was wrong about it was that IT WAS TOOO SHORT 😂😂
It feels like they've just started and then 😕😪 over
MAKE INTERVIEWS LONG AGAIN 😂😂
May we have some more please
lol You've still got it Mr Frakes - @11:16 Patrick jolts in his chair and Jonathan instantly does the same. Old habits ehh?!
Picard and Riker back again :) I have never enjoyed almost an hour of conversation between two men I have never met before today! :)
I first saw Patrick Stewart as Sejanus in _"I, Claudius"_ on BBC TV in 1976. Great actor.
{:o:O:}
WITH HAIR. I found that incongruously hilarious.
@@talamioros
YES!
{:o:O:}
This is awesome..so nice to see these two gentlemen together again. ❤❤
For Jon it's like getting an audience to roast your big brother. :D
Patrick is an AMAZING story teller, could listen to him for hours
Then buy his Biography, read by himself. Available since October 23
What a conversation! Hilarious anecdotes from Patrick Stewart 🥲
Actually kissing on the mouth at 0:31! Jeeze and wow! These guys must absolutely trust each other and love each other dearly!
This is just great!! I'd pay to attend that discussion.
That story of the stolen Star Trek uniforms needs to be a movie!!!!
They are the absolute best!
That was lovely. I appreciate each of them more than ever - and that's after having bought, and thoroughly enjoyed, Sir Patrick's book.
I love how "Johnny" occasionally roasts Sir Patrick in this segment
I haven't been a good reader for years now, but I really want that book and to read it, not just let it collect dust on a shelf...
Sir Patrick Stewart is so freaking cool.
This is one of the best interviews I have ever seen!
Ah, the sandwich scene. Sometimes you just have to ham it up on stage.
Great event. It is so lovley to see how deep this friendship is! Thank you very much!
So much fun! Thank you for this! I won't be able to attend any of his book launch events live, but I now feel as if I've been at one very special one!
Terry Matalas is the Dave Filoni of Star Trek. To do great work you have to respect the franchise and see yourself as a caretaker of it.
I get your point but i think Dave Feloni is a bit overated to be honest.
Filoni did not save Star Wars. And, Matalas did not save Star Trek. Pic S3 was ok at best. The bar was set pretty low, though.
Filoni didn't save star trek, I agree, but he is creating great content, as I see it, and he's being given an ability to tell more.
Matalas was able to bridge better TNG and new style of trek and how tv is now presented. I don't know what else he's done, and I've been out of alot of new trek, but he saved Picard for me.
@@deon700 that’s awesome that it worked for you. I liked Pic season 3 much more than 1 and 2. Making Picard an android at the end of 1 really drive me over the edge. And, season 2 was just a bunch of shit worse then season one of TNG. Pic Season 3 being better wasn’t hard to do.
I’m glad Matalas was able to salvage a decent season. There are still a bunch of things I didn’t like about season 3. But, it’s all over shadowed by all the bad trek since 2009. Trek ended in 2005 for me.
....did you not watch Ahsoka!? 🤮🤮🤮🤮
Excellent anecdotes from two SciFi heroes.
Patrick Stewart is so awesome. I wish him a happy and healthy future.
It's cool to see how Frakes turned the character of Riker into a reflection of himself. The Riker we saw in Picard was older and much more secure in command, as Frakes became in real life as a very capable director. Riker's authority flows naturally from Frakes, as does his humour, which made Riker the coolest and most authentic character in Picard; yes, even more than Picard himself. His close relationship with Patrick Stewart shines through when both are in character, which is why their scenes together were my favourite.
Anybody else think of that one student in Harry Potter when Stewart said he was head boy?
I loved this, Frakes is worryingly similar to James Lipton as an interviewer!
This is a treasure.
A lovely scene indeed!!!
and a swell video.
I must take, as a long time small town actor, this opportunity to top, if you will, Mister Stewart's charming story.
I had a director whose only input, after a 5th attempt at a tricky Shakespeare bit, suddenly stood up and screamed : Do it again....only better!!!
PS to you budding directors, that didn't help much.....
sorry, that didn't 'top' PS' story.
Love you and The startrek world. ❤ made my life better.
Such a delight! Thank you gentlemen.
Love This..!!
This was great!
Season 3 of picard is "All good things" level of masterpiece except with 8 episodes.
I love this, please can I have some more(????
Please buy his book. He needs the money.😊
That was great!
i enjoyed that!
What a treat!
No questions from the audience or Jonathan about Excalibur? That's quite the omission for such a celebrated career
I love both of them. The lighting here on this stage, however, is so glaring as to make it painful to watch. What sort of videographer did they hire? I will have to save this for when I can listen it to on my headphones.
Great fun interview!
However Picard S3 is the only one that should be canon from that show.
I love these two. Hope to someday go for a beverage with them.
I lovee blunt talk shoukda got 5 seasons
First thing I ever saw Sir Patrick Stewart in was a film called 'Little Lord Fauntleroy' with Sir Alec Guinness before either were knighted (at least Patrick anyhow). He played a Stableman / Riding Teacher.
LOL love it
But in Galaxy Quest, Tim Allen was BILL SHATNER. How the cast under him (in the story of the film) did not get along with his ego and personality. I totally got that the first time I saw it.
This is the best Rob Halford interview yet.
💜💜💜💜💜
Make it so number 1.
Lmao 🤣 okay i am pissing myself laughing over those 2 things ... Patrick's description on what he looked like and Jonathan telling what Patrick said when on the Enterprise Bridge when they are being bounced around/thrusted etc😂 lmao 🤣
Stewart is so special Legend in his own lunchbox
152 years right there
❤❤🖖
Picard season 3 felt like Star Trek.
1:31 - The Maneuver
Patrick walks on and he's DTF!
"Nicely done, number one."
"25 years in the Royal Shakespeare Company for this!"
@13:10 very very long Dune story but pretty great, Really liked it haha! Very very interesting
Did you understand the ending? Coz I didn’t get it.
i love dune
so did the director want the character to look awful, like he first saw him in that play?
imagine the character Patrick Stewart played in dune all grungy and 'orrible!?
weird..
it can't be what he wanted surely??
Make it so, Number One lol
👍🏻👍🏻🖖🏻🖖🏻
so which episode does riker kneel down in engineering..
any ideas..?
I just want to note that both of these fine men are esteemed members of the Film Actors’ Guild.
to what end?
Once an X-Men, always an X-Men
Some people only know him from Star Trek, I know him from the X-Men series
20:38 LOL
around the 43:13 minute mark, the video/sound goes out of sync
