- The Conservative Party had set the date for announcing the result of the leadership election as Wednesday, 12 September 2001 at the opening of the contest. Events the previous day completely overshadowed the announcement, but the party could not delay it as it needed a Leader in post to respond to the new world situation.
Here is BBC News 24's coverage, with the terrorist attacks still dominating the news. Jane Hill and Peter Dobbie are in the studio, with Nick Robinson outside Conservative Central Office. Reeta Chakrabarti talks to grassroots Conservatives in Iain Duncan Smith's constituency, while Nicholas Jones is in Rushcliffe with Kenneth Clarke's local supporters.
This sums up the Tory Party membership- when presented between the electable moderate and the unelectable right-winger, they will chose the unelectable right winger every single time. Liz Truss is the most recent example.
Europe was Ken Clarke’s downfall.
The tories really had bad luck there, with 9/11 horror happening the day before, and all of the limelight gone. They couldn't be seen to be too celebratory, after the previous days horror.
we had e bad luck in 1997 01 and 05 7 7 h w our le h it f in dec 2005
huh?
The limelight wasn't gone at all, it was delayed by a day because of 9/11 but still received a lot of coverage, they were still the second party and hadn't been out of power all that long so it was covered heavier than other leadership elections after this.
The day after 9/11. Jesus did anyone even watch or know about this?!
Yes, actually, it was talked about despite 9/11 and did get a lot of coverage and, jokes about Blair breathing a sigh of relief as the most dull candidate won.
19:15 Not quite, he still had 18 years to go as an MP, several further years of cabinet experience and another leadership election campaign, as well as being an important voice during the Brexit debate.
