In this video I show you how I make grime guards for cross stitch or hand embroidery projects. What is a grime guard? A grime guard is similar to a steering cover in look and function. A grime guard is a piece of elasticized fabric that goes around a Q-snap or embroidery hoop. It keeps the oils from your hands or any other unwanted dirt from getting on your project.

How to make a grime guard for a Q-snap or embroidery hoop.
Why hello my fellow fabric stabbed. How are ya? You're looking beautiful as always, (we _can_ tell these sorts of things, can we?😉). Just wanted to say a huge thank you for posting this here video. I really needed it.🤗 Don't mind me, just stuck here in the middle of yet _another_ complete, 6week lockdown. I'm on week number 2.5 & in case you can't tell I've gone pretty much sHaCk WaCKy. Need _more_ stuff to start & stop halfway through, until I finish it up next week.🤣🤣🤣 Stay out of trouble. But if you can't seem to, than _please_ don't brag about your antics. You see my plane is um, in the shop. Yeah. Yeah, that's it. Well alrighty than, it's been great chatting. 🤗🇨🇦

I was about to buy a grime guard but thankfully I thought to look up how to make them myself & found your video. I have a sewing machine and a fabric stash so I went for it. I couldn't have done it without your helpful video!! My grime guard is perfect!! Thank you so much!!

@@rsislandcrafts I agree so much about supporting small businesses! I did purchase grime guards a few years ago but they don't fit the sizes I like to use now. The good thing is it got me sewing again, which I dearly love and haven't done in a long while. Also, I can start to use up my fabric stash AND spend my money on other things in my too full Etsy cart 😂 Thanks again!!
@@gailf1781 I completely understand and agree with everything you’ve said. Been there. Exactly. If I can make some things then It opens up my budget to buy other things. Being able to leave things in my Etsy cart is a little dangerous. I can forget what I saw window shopping but it’s harder to forget when it’s sitting in my cart 😉

I had a Snoopy watch back in the 80’s and a Winnie the Pooh watch. I loved them.
Mine was very early’70’s. Apple Watch is supposed to start offering a Snoopy watch face option. I need to check again. I have imported seasonal/holiday Snoopy shots and use them as my watch face. Thank you for the Happy memories. Today I will be making my first Grime Guard. I’m going to see about using the bottom hemmed edge of t-shirts that I am harvesting for my memory quilt.
I did see about the Snoopy Apple Watch face option. I thought It was very cool. Using the hem of a tshirt is a great way to recycle the scraps from your memory quilt.

I made one following your video and, while I made a few mistakes (I had never used a sewing machine before!) the project turned out decent and it fits perfectly!

I just got into embroidery and I have a purple Susan Bates hoop. And I also love sewing and crafting and this craft for my embroidery hoop. Note: I am also 13 so I am still learning but I love this hoop craft. I didn't even know this kind of accessory exsisted. Can't wait to make one.
Welcome! I love my plastic purple hoop. It holds the fabric nice and tight. I really enjoy hand embroidery. I've done a ton of back stitch projects but this year I am learning as many new stitches as I can. I think the grime guard is an amazing accessory. Not only does it keep our projects clean but we can have fun fabric to look at while we stitch.

bonnie musselman I bet that’s fun in December. Plus It helps keep your steering wheel from being too cold. Although I guess that’s not a problem for you though or does It get cold in your area?

Thank you so much!!! All that excess fabric was driving me crazy, but I was able to mke this with little to no sewing machine experience (i spent more time figuring out how to sew than actually sewing)
I’m so glad you were able to make one. The more you sew the quicker you’ll get at your machine. It used to take me awhile to get everything set up and going too.
I used to spend more time rearranging all that extra fabric then I did actually stitching. So frustrating.
You are very good doing the grime guard. You start at the very beginning measuring.
You show and explain how to measure the Q Snap length, all 4 sides and the circumference around the Q Snap pvc. You explain the process well
Others I have watched others who are not sure of themselves and do not show how to measure the Q Snap. Sometimes beginners are watching to learn and it is good to start at the beginning.

Thank you for posting this tutorial! I ordered a grime guard on Etsy because I'm not confident in my sewing skills, but when it came it was way too small! I can barely fit it on the hoop, much less stow away extra fabric. I'm gunna try to make my own following this video.
That’s so frustrating. Take It slow and you’ll be surprised at how much you can get accomplished. If it’s not perfect or “pretty” it’s okay too. It’s just for you. Once you make the first and get an idea of how It all goes together your next grime guard will be better and maybe even faster. I like to make my first one out of fabric I like but not my most favorite. That way if It doesn’t turn out quite like I had hoped I didn’t “ruin” my favorite fabrics. Have fun !
Just made two grime guards. Took me about 3 hrs total. I love them. The pressing of the casing took longer than anything else. Thanks for doing this tutorial....

Robin! Wow! Please let me say "Thank you!" for a very well-done tutorial! I just learned about grime guards and not wanting to wait for one to come in the mail I figured I could make one. Not being familiar with RsIslandCrafts, yours happened to be the first tutorial that came up so I opened it. I have ADD and my wires get crossed when watching tutorials...especially in sewing, as all the little details matter. Listening to someone say "um" 14 times in the first minute, having someone be clearly unprepared and winging it, and when someone says, "I'm not going to do that part because I'm lazy"- all those things are sooooo distracting and I move on as soon as they come up. I think the best tutorials are like yours-- prepared by an instructor who knows what they're talking about, are very clear and succinct, look good, and tell you about possible mistakes and how to fix them if they happen. Knowing all the details about how to do it right, without someone saying they skip steps because they're lazy (I've heard this countless times), means I learn how to do it the right way, then I can choose my own shortcuts if I want to. This is so long already but I could go on! Again, thank you so much for this, and I've subscribed!

I have the same wonder woman fabric it's the second one I've bought of the same fabric. I like to buy the white fat squares because you can get 4 embroidery projects out of it depending on how much you need to use. I use one of the squares within the fat quarter for my because I use iron on patterns since I'm just stating.

Thanks Terie. You could use the same technique and make a steering wheel cover. Maybe not to drive with but to protect from the sun’s heat. I like to brainstorm other ways to use a project. Maybe to cover the edges of an oval mirror??

Nice tutorial. I like the Dritz tool, however, to make casings I use my machine. I run two rows of straight basting stitches, one at 1/4 inch and one at 3/4 inches. Then I just use the stitched lines to fold in as I sew.

You’re welcome. That’s so funny. Do you have cheesy fingers or do you do the toothpick trick? I’m paranoid when working with anything light colored. I wash my hands constantly even if I’m not snacking at the same time.

You guys are both crazy! lol Eating snacks with a toothpick slows me down. I have to admit that I haven't had Cheetos in years. My son Robbie loves the flaming hot crunchy style. I used to eat the white cheddar version.

Thank you for sharing this. Should I worry about the fabric I choose for my guard to bleed onto the aida or linen from being rubbed together?
Most of the newer quilting cottons do not bleed but red is always scary. You can test your fabric first. It would be heartbreaking if It bled on your cross trick project. You can search online for how to test your fabric to see if It bleeds. You can hand wash your fabric in a bowl to see if any dyes come out. I hope I didn’t make confusing.
@@rsislandcrafts I made this for my 17in snap frames. It turned out really well. I used more fabric then I allotted when I was folding over the elastic seams but that's probably because I'm sort of a novice sewer. I'll add an extra inch next time to give me more room to waste a bit on my finished edge. Thanks again. I'm very proud of my project.

Kool thanks! If I were to buy one online for a 6x6 frame should I buy it larger so I have room to tuck?
I would hate to give you bad advice but I’m not sure. Do you tend to use a 6x6 frame on large pieces? Like maybe 24x 32 or whatever?? So that you have a ton of excess fabric? If you use a 6x6 frame but only make say 12x12 projects I wouldn’t buy a larger guard. You don’t want It to be loose and sloppy on your frame. Does that make sense? With a small frame like 6x6 you also have to worry about the guard covering your working space. I would want to see the guard being displayed on a 6x6 frame in the listing so i could see how much of the working space it covers.
It’s been awhile since I’ve used a grime guard so I had to watch the video a bit and think about It. I think I would buy a guard made for a 6x6 frame unless you’re working on a very large project. You can roll and tuck quite a bit of fabric into the guard because of the width of fabric.
@@rsislandcrafts thank you so much it kind of makes sense I'm still a little bit of a beginner I haven't cross stitched in years! All these new frames weren't around back then. I just seen on The Fat Quarter Shop Kimberly had overhanging Aida fabric. Maybe it's just personal preference!
Abbey P It’s totally a personal preference. Some let the fabric hang, some use clips or pins to hold It out of the way and some tuck into grime guards. I guess It depends on how clean and oil free you can keep your hands and how you store your project when you’re not working on It. I have 3 cats, I wash my hands frequently, and I store my projects on their own project bag. But the extra fabric tends to get in my way when I’m stitching so I tend to clip It out of the way or tuck It into a grime guard. Happy stitching!!
Wish I would have known about these years ago. I have a cross stitch picture that is now grimy looking. I could wash it but it has been glued into a special frame. :-(

How much fabric and elastic would you need for a 7inch hoop
Would you still do 6 inches on a hoop since they are not as thick as a q snap?
Jessi RaRaRa I think for me It would depend on the size of the hoop and whether or not there will be extra fabric to tuck into the grime guard. An 8” hoop will definitely need a narrower strip of fabric than a 12” hoop. You could try starting with a 5” strip and see if that will fit your hoop better. I tried a 4.5” wide strip when I first started making grime guards and I felt It was too narrow.
Hi, good idea, but is it comfortable for stitching with it ? Do we have a good holding in hand ?
It’s personal preference. It doesn’t bother me or my hand. The grime guard isn’t super wide which means I have a good grip on my project. Some people enjoy It and some people don’t care either way.
@@rsislandcrafts if it doesn"t interfere embroidery, and if we keep frame well, so I think it's a good idea. For example, edges of my fabric are fraying while I am stitching, and this grime guard is a good idea. 🙂
I agree. Even if we wash our hands constantly the natural oils from our hands can get on our fabric.

Can the grime guard be used when using a lap hoop?
I would think that as long as your hoop is detachable you should be fine. I have a lap/table top stand and I use a grime guard. I put on the grime guard and then attach It to the lap stand. Works fine. Good luck!

Again one question... why cutting fabric in 2 pieces instead of 1 piece ?
Because my fabric wasn’t long enough. In the video I talked about cutting the fabric based on what fabric you have. If you have a fat quarter you might need two pieces of fabric. If you have yardage you could either cut two pieces by the width of fabric or one long piece based on the length of fabric on hand. It’s less expensive to purchase fabric by width verses length.
