    It's funny that, after doing all his research on Rita's background, Phil responded to "I studied 1800's French poetry" with words from a 1957 French song, rather than any of thousands of 19th century poems.

      Rita's polite, "You speak french!" tells me that she's a lady of quality, that Phil's obsession is warranted. Rita's willingness to be polite and not call Phil on hit fraudulence could also be a hint that she's always liked him, but that she needed him to stop being a jerk. ... My involvement with the plot aside, I think you've caught the filmmakers in their having a bit of fun.

      Phil never said he was the one who studied 19th century French poetry, so the scene was written correctly, showing a guy who knows some French and maybe a poem or two, what century is irrelevant, though, if he could have tracked down a French poem from that era, he probably would have. No internet then and a small public library most likely.

    Murray's performance in Groundhog Day is simply amazing. He is the Michael Jordan of comedic acting... but what sets Murray apart is that he is also a fantastic dramatic actor. He should've been nominated for an Oscar over Fishburne for this role.

      actually my son and i just caught a link and they had it figured as 12,395 days or =33 years 350 days. still awesome. have you ever sen the movie "The Razor's Edge"? it is just his best work ever. but he's good in zombieland also!

      Groundhog's day is our favorite move of all time and we too watch it every year on Feb 2nd. Also, Razor's Edge is a great performance, but nowhere has Bill Murray been better at being Bill Murray than in this.

    I watched this Movie when I was 8 for the very first Time. I learned so much about Life in that Movie...we all dream of the Chance to go back in Time and make something different...it was such a Mindfuck for me when I was young...English is not my first language and I wish I could descripe how this Movie change me and still doesnt let me go all this years later! Forever one of my all time favourits!

    Bill Murray's metamorphosis from faux pas to coup de maître in 15 seconds is timeless.. which kinda coincides with the essence of the film, eh

    Headcannon: After this, Phil gets a job in France for the US diplomatic service as an English translator, as well as teaching English and Piano and playing piano on the weekends at a coffee shop. Rita's doing her thesis at the University of Paris. Phil wins the World Art Ice Championship in Fairbanks, Alaska.

    So you understand that EVERYBODY in the movie is reliving the same day again and again except THEY start over without any memory of the "previous" day where Bill Murray has the advantage of remembering. So in a way he "saves" the entire world and helps them step into "tomorrow."

    Oui mais c'est dans plein de films ça, à cause du doublage.en tout cas son français est tellement mauvais que c'est presque incompréhensible, ils ont dû inventer le poème.on se doute que c'est le français et pas l'Italien qu'elle a étudié parce qu'ensuite il lui parle de baudelaire
