Winning an Olympic medal despite her painful past was a big achievement on its own:)
Her performance was very mature and regal. Nothing rushed and executed carefully and gracefully, very clean and elegant skating.
I agree with you. She should have won the gold here. Such a shame. But it is nice to revisit this skate of Nancy's and see it again. It was her best long program of her career!
@@auntiechercher4266 Oksana earned her gold đ
@@cad7129 Oksana won over Nancy with two (not one, but 2) two-footed jumps, and no triple-triple combination! Nancy had five triples (Oksana only three clean ones) and a beautiful triple-triple. The judging was off! And that's the fact, jack!!!
Almost everything about it was like watching ammature hour except for her jumps. Jumps were all she had.
@@JessG_20 No, that is not all Nancy had. She had beautiful presence on the ice which matched her beautiful artistry.
Its wild that in the beginning of 94 we had Tonya vs Nancy. Then in June OJ. Wild year 94 was!
Vera Wang made her costume...beautiful.
Sammy Smith one of the most elegant of all skate costumes ever created! Kudos to Vera Vang!
Sammy Smith And thatâs truly all important to be said about her... she had money and the image, thatâs all. Thank God she didnât win Gold. Her performance was the epitome of forgettable.
Incredible performance. Best I've ever seen.
@@dominicweber She was just an ordinary middle class person like most and had to earn her way. She was not rich as so many misinformed brats think. That sounds like Marxist ideology too, the haves against the have nots. You are a succor for it.
@@mtoad Certainly better than Oksana Baiul.
If you watch this program again, you will notice Nancy even pulls off a triple-triple jump combination.
In 94 this was practically unheard of.
She def found a zone to skate her best between the whack and the Lillehammer Olympics.
She only had about 6 weeks to recup and recover not to mention do rehab sev times a day to rebuild strength.
Nobody ever talks about the incredible odds she was up against.
Nobody would blame her if she didn't medal bc of the physical and emotional damage she went thru after the U.S. Nationals in Detroit.
I will give her a big thumbs up for conquering so many different types of demons just to make it this far
The dress was unforgettable. The skate was totally forgettable.
It's vera wang! It's vera wang people get hypotize by her beauty and look like princess disney
Dress was bland
Nicole So is that what people do? Eat the dress? đ
Skate was fantastic..
Youâre pathetic. Bet you couldnât match this.
She's a beautiful doveâ€
It looks like she's having the time of her life here!
Itâs the only time Iâve ever seen Nancy skate with her heart and connect with the audience.
Why is she so stiff tho everyone in the comments is like âshe deserved gold! etc.â. If she had the artistry than yes maybe she should have won. But thats what made Oksana Baiul stand out and win. She also had artistry and emotion throughout her performance. Nancy didnât so thats why she got silver. If she wasnât satisfied than she shouldâve tried harder.
Frankie Again, you know nothing of what youâre running your mouth off about.........
@@pamyoung8164 I don't know what's going on, but I've noticed these Nancy Kerrigan haters all over social media past year. Don't know why. Most come off as trolls.
@@spirittammyk They are trolls and they do hate Nancy and their childish imagination starts working overtime. They know nothing about skating and everything about hating. They make everything up because they don't really know what to say bad about the overused comparison about artistry. Nancy got six 5.9s and three 5.8s in artistic impression.
@starlight You are a boring judge of character. Learn something about ice skating and be more specific than she's boring.
@@GGE47 It needs to be a combination of both artistry and athletism. Fact is, Nancy has a stronger technical program than Oksana Bauill in 94. Bauill kept on two footing her landings. And when it comes to Nancy vs Tonya, there is no comparison. Without the triple axel, Tonya is a nobody. I've watched skaters like Nicole Bobek do a performance with no jumps, but they had such a commanding presence on the ice, you didn't even notice. Shame she let herself get into drug, because she was so talented on the ice.
That skating dress still is beautiful
Why would it not be 'still' beautiful. Nothing has changed.
The best money can buy.
To quote the late great Aretha Franklin "Great gowns, beautiful gowns."
â@@mayloo2137she wasn't rich, if that's what you are implying. But she did have kind parents willing to make sacrifices for ber, and she was attractive enough to get sponsors.
Nancy was the most beautiful elegant graceful skater ever. Her femininity is envied and probably not even recognized by these critics. She doesnât even take a footstep without it showing. Most athletic females canât come close to her or wouldnât even recognize what it is sheâs got. Everyone else didnât have the maturity and grace she did and still donât. And every single movement and all of the jumps were perfectly executed. Bravo to the ever lasting beauty that she is. Any critic on this site canât even recognize beauty all they have is evil envy. â€Love to Nancy
Elegance and beauty aren't supposed to be factors in judging. They don't win Olympics.
Nancy skates so beautifully and flawlessly here. Wonderful figure skater.
My idol did amazing moves!
This routine still gives me chills all these years later. â€ïž
Great, job! A graceful performance is how u pay back an attacker. I cant believe that was 30 yrs ago.
Thank you so much for posting this without the commentary. I had so many great memories of watching this performance
People love a comeback story, especially when it's someone who is a victim like she was. She didn't deserve to be injured, she deserved her Olympic moment that she worked hard for. Was this the best routine? No. Did it deserve gold? No, not in comparison to the others. But do we love to see people overcome adversities? Yes, absolutely. That's the only reason people think she deserved the gold, because despite what happened to her, she still did this, and in front of the world. That is inspirational.
Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!! Nancy Kerrigan outskated Baiul and it wasn't even close. Those 5 commie judges stuck together and made sure Oksana got the gold. She was Ukraine( part of the former Soviet Union) and Nancy was American. There never should have been 5 commie judges on that panel. The Olympic Committee is to blame. Nancy did overcome her adversities and won the gold, but dealing with Communist judges will cheat you every time. Oksana just didn't make the combination jumps like Nancy did. Nancy was spectacular. Oksana was just a cutie pie dancing around to old Broadway tunes. She lacked a lot in the technical part. That is why she lost to Surya Bonaly in the European Championships.
It was a hard thing to judge Nancy, Oksana, and even Tanya were all competing against themselves and what they had overcome to get to their moment. Personally, I felt Oksana more than the others, I liked her come from nothing story and how that was expressed out there on the ice. Nancy kinda has this imperial nature about her and could be a little snippy at times, which is why I liked her. But hey, thanks for expressing yourself!
I think that on the technical part Nancy was way cleaner, but a bit stiff and oksana wasnât as clean, but had more rhythm and fluidity in her movements.
@@susy379 She did not skate as difficult a program. Degree of difficulty is more important, especially when she skates them without any flaws. Oksana just made too many mistakes. That is why Nancy won the short program.
Nancy haters always ignore the lack of mistakes and refuse to acknowledge Oksana's obvious mistakes.
@@susy379 I agree with that. There is more to a program than just the technical part ie jumping. I really haven't watched Nancy Kerrigan before, but she doesn't seem to cover much ice with her jumps. Oksana's in-between skatework seems to be better than Nancy's. And she had more expression too.
That was a wow performance. I remember listening in the states on the radio bc of time zone difference. She skated as if she owned the ice. Brilliant. No regrets, surely. Thanks Nancy.
Had the opportunity to meet Nancy years ago and saw her skate live on several occasions. I attended the performance right before the 94 games after she recovered from the attack. A beautiful, strong, classy woman who was grace personified on the ice. Wishing her, Jerry and the kids all the best.
Love her or hate her, Nancy was the winner that night. Her performance was FAR more sophisticated and MUCH cleaner than Baiul's skate, which was full of two-foot landings, facial mugging and only one combo that was thrown in at the very end, not to mention her pink flamingo costume with ponytail scrunchie. How anyone could think Baiul deserved the gold is incredible. Nancy's was the skate of the night. Nancy's ONLY mistake, and it wasn't even a mistake since it was in the free program, was to double a planned triple flip. That's it. She had zero deductions.
Baiul, on the other hand, had the sympathy vote of the judges. The media was setting her up to win days before the competition, calling her the "Orphan from Odessa". If they said it once, they said it 1,000 times, and how Victor Petrenko was her "father figure". The press was bound and determined to make her the "feel good" story of the 94 games. "Orphan Wins Olympic Gold for Dead Parents; Father figure won gold in 1992!" The mantra was all over the news and newspapers. Such a crime. Some people dislike Nancy because she expressed her upset at being robbed after the Olympics. Who wouldn't? You spend your whole life for 4 minutes on the ice, give a flawless performance and end up with sliver...I would have been pissed, too. She KNEW she'd won, and so did everyone else who understands skating.
Nancy was the epitome of sophistication. She was the first skater to show you could be elegant on the ice and shunned the typical gaudy gold lamae, sequins, puffy sleeves and feathers that filled ladies skating. In the years to come, ALL the ladies would emulate her classic style from Michelle Kwan to Kim Yuna. In fact, you could take this skate and perform it today with the same costume 24 years later, and it wouldn't look out of place. It's timeless. You can't say that about Baiul's LP, which looked dated just a couple years after the 94 games.
I thought it looked dated then (Oksana)!
Eh I think Nancy was better technically. Oksana was better artistically. Oksana didn't even have a combination
@@Kaboomboo She did have a combo which may have won her ogm - literally a last second double axel double toe out of nowhere.
There was something so magical about her performance. I felt like I've seen her in 3 acts in this free skate and we got to see her in three variations with the last segment being my favorite. To me, it was more artistic and i appreciate that aspect. I kept my eyes glued the whole way!
Excellent comments, Danny. And it seemed to go by so fast, and that's because it was so wonderful, so exceptional!!!
OMG!!! Who do these people think they are on here!! Unless your an Olympic skater get off this page!! No one could have any idea the horrific amount of training courage and guts it takes to even get there let alone HOW BEAUTIFULLY SHE SKATED!!â€ïžđđ„°

Beautifully skated. Graceful, smooth, nice energy when needed, expressive and soft where needed, technical exuberance where needed. A wonderful performed competitive skate. Don't know what people are talking about when they criticize this.
Totally agree. Nancy did an amazing job. She was at the top of her game. Wish she had rcvd the gold.
They were deceived by the biased movie I, Tonya that is clearly made to exaggerate Tonya Harding life.

Exactly
â@jjh2456 The flip at the beginning was a double but it didn't look popped open. There was really no criticism to it other than the fact it wasn't a triple. But it was certainly not an ugly double.
her dress was so beautiful.
Katasylic designed by Vera Wang! Itâs absolutely gorgeous!
Incredibly beautiful performance! Amazing to pull off a silver medal while being in so much physical pain, which she hid so well. She deserved the gold.
Indeed, she did.
Truth nailed.
What physical pain? She had sustained only bruising in the attack, which had happened over a month before this. Oksana Baiul, by contrast, was skating with twelve stitches in her calf after having it sliced open by a fellow competitor's blade the DAY BEFORE, and had had Olympic-approved painkilling injections just to be able to compete. There's no comparison.
@@theshillneckedlizard8364 had she not sustained any @ all we wouldn't be here. But, Tonya, couldn't resist. This shouldn't have ever happened. It did, so lay off Nancy, she played by the book. If course, ppl are going to defend her.
@@kirbykipling9515 I clearly stated she suffered bruising. But you are trying to imply that she suffered serious injury. Which she did NOT. Go on and list Nancy's "serious injuries" that had her apparently competing in "so much pain." Go on, list them. I'll wait.

beautiful angel of 1994!
Flawless, she should have had the gold đšđŠ
She was clearly robbed of the gold medal that night. Those crooked judges had this disdain towards the 2 American skaters brought largely by the Tonya-Nancy brouhaha. Nancy skated much better than Oksana that night.
That was so beautiful and moving. I didn't want to blink.
This was perfection! I remember watching it live back in 94. We were all holding our breath that year because of what was happening and watching Nancy perform this routine at the Olympics was just the best! This is what Olympic moments are made of. I think the entire country was excited for her and to this day I still cry tears of happiness watching how proud she was of her performance. Just the best. Nancy Kerrigan is our Olympic icon! She should have won Gold. I also had the pleasure of meeting her back in 2017 and she is truly a warm hearted and kind person.
Not an icon and she was not the best there. I too was excited to see her skate and hoping for her to win. She was not the gold skater there and she showed such poor sportsmanship towards a kid that fought all odds to win. She was a total wench with her attitude and dirty looks towards a kid that was like 8 years younger than her. I thought Nancy was classy.. till then.
I don't get why people say Nancy was robbed. No she was not. She was too stiff and unnatural. Her transitions were not that hard at all. She did not have an overall better program than Oksana.
Nancy definitely wasnât robbed. Oksana was much better. Nancy didnât have the sweetness and grace that Oksana did. Nancy just always looks so miserable.
Brave Weirdo can you do her transitions? No? Then to us my friend, they are hard.
Technically speaking she sure did have a better free skate!!!
son programme au niveau des sauts et des combinaisons de sauts est largement supérieur a celui d e oksana
Dawn Reliford that's the issue. Technically it wasn't even close. You could argue for Oksana being .1 better on the second mark (though I would have given them both 5.9's on this mark--I loved both of their artistry, just in different ways--and their artistic marks overall were identical--6 5.9's and 3 5.8's--just from different judges. GBR, USA, and JPN had Nancy better artistically, POL, CAN, and GER had Oksana better artistically, and CZE, UKR, and CHI had them tied on that mark. The problem was how the devil those last three (CZE, UKR, CHI) could have possibly put Oksana ahead on the first mark. They did, and that's what made the difference. She had one spin that was more difficult than Nancy's (the doughnut-hole camel), but Nancy had that amazing spiral sequence that Oksana didn't come close on, and on the jumps, Nancy beat Oksana 5 completed triples (three in combination including a triple-triple) to 3, (none in combination). They both landed the Lutz, Salchow, and loop, neither landed a flip (Nancy's was doubled, Oksana's was two-footed which means you don't get credit for it as a completed element), and Nancy had the triple toe/triple toe combination, while Oksana didn't complete a triple toe. (First attempt was doubled and if you watch, the one she threw in at the end, it was also two-footed, so should not have been counted.) Nancy should have been at least .2 if not .3 better on the first mark, which should have given her the win even if you give Oksana a .1 edge on the artistic mark.
Like her or not, Nancy was ripped HUGE at these games. Her only mistake was to double a triple flip. That's it. Baiul had loads of two-foot landings, wild swinging legs, and only one combo thrown in at the last second, not to mention the junior-ish choreography, and feathery, frilly pink flamingo costume, complete with ponytail scrunchie. Nancy was the first female skater to abandon the tacky gold lamae, sequins, puffy sleeves, feathers, and garish colors of ladies skating for a much more sophisticated look and performance that would go on to be emulated years later by the likes of Michelle Kwan, Kim Yuna and others. If Nancy had won in '94 (as she should have) and Linda Fratiannie hadn't been cheated in 1980, the U.S. would have won a gold medal in at least one figure skating discipline at every Olympics between 1976 and 2002, 36 years.
Nancy should have won this on the basis of the technical mark. Even if you give Oksana .1 edge in the artistic mark, Nancy should have been .2 ahead in the technical mark. She did a triple-triple combination, and one other triple sal double toe combination. Oksana only did one combination in the whole performance, and it was the double axel double toe at the end which was very sloppy... She also two-footed two of her landings (flip and the final triple toe). I might have even given Chen Lu a higher technical mark than Oksana, she did two triple lutzes. What i still cannot understand is that the judges from The Czech republic, Ukraine, and China gave Oksana higher technical marks. At least Hoffman who cast the deciding vote to Oksana did so on the basis of the artistic mark.
Love her or hate her (and not defending her conduct after the competition ended) Nancy had a legitimate beef here.
There was a thought and I think there may be some merit to it that she was being partially blamed for all of the media attention and controversy with the whole Tonya Harding fiasco. That obviously makes very little sense because itâs not as if Nancy Kerrigan brought any of that on herself, yet some seem to blame her to an extent.
@@dbreiden83080 I think you're probably on to something there. Victim blaming is definitely a thing and some of that may have applied here.
I don't see where the artistic was lacking. Nancy skated with so much emotion and enthusiasm.
@@monabiehl6213 i personally agree. I was just making the point that even if you like Oksana's artistry better, Nancy still should have won... Nancy skated her heart out.
I'm watching this performance 24 years later for the first time. Flawless. Beautiful dress and music, too.
She won bronze in 1992, had only eight months to heal because of a goon, and people say she looks stiff?! She makes it look effortless! Thatâs is exactly what every sport strives for that has artistic elements. Movie needs to be done about her, not just a parody. You gotta have heart and lots of good mojo to stand in your power after being attacked. Love her! â€ïž
She mostly did back crossovers to gain speed for jumps, her program was a bunch of spins, crossovers and jumps. No artistry whatsoever

You have to understand Nancy's previous problems skating in big international competitions and cracking under pressure to appreciate this performance. I'm not a big fan of hers, but she's caught unnecessary flak from trollers since the "I Tonya" movie came out.
Itâs sad that before this performance, Nancy always placed because others fell, and the one time she puts on the performance of a lifetime, the gold medal slips away.
She deserved everythingâŠ.! Two faced she is!
whoever designed her costume is a legend. It stands the test of time.
Vera Wang, who subsequently designed many beautiful costumes for Michelle Kwan.
She should have won the Gold Medal for sure
It was very close. Itâs weird a lot of people just didnât like her. I was having this conversation just the other day with my sister her and I were both big figure skating fans back in the day. She was very critical of her personality, and felt she was a very cold skater. No emotions. Oksana she felt had a more joyous performance and deserve to win. Personally I disagree.
One cannot be loose and floppy in such a competition.
She has a great smile and beautiful teeth.
Init
Athletic skating without a doubt but not terribly graceful, which is not necessarily a bad thing, and they made very smart style choices with the music and choreography to suit her strengths. Fun to watch imo. Her jumps and spins consistently have a weird wobble
Her performances were always so graceful â€ïžđ
Tonya did what most narcissists do. Blane others & refuse to take responsibility for their actions. Her mother worked around the clock to make sure she had what she needed to perform. But, It was never enough. Then, the blame shifted to Jeff, her husband. I believe the abuse claims were highly embellished. But for her being the mastermind, the attack heard around the world wouldn't have happened. For reasons known only to her, Nancy was a threat to Tonya. Like Tonya, she too, came from a working class family. The differences in their upbringing was that Nancy, by no fault of her own, was raised on love. Tonya on survival.
How did she not win gold for that performance??
Oxana baiul
@- Anthony Pffft. Kerrigan had all the artistry of a shopfront mannequin. She took forever to set up a jump, and her spins were also of a lower difficulty level than Baiul's. She doubled her planned triple lutz and she barely hung on to the flip. About the only thing Kerrigan had going for her was a pretty Vera Wang dress.
Music background was a Neil Diamond's medley
The first song is "Play Me" from Diamond's album "Moods". The second one is "Headed for the future" from Diamond's homonym album. The third one is "Dear father" from Diamond's JLS soundtrack album. The last one, unfortunately, I can't recognize. Kind regards!

Good costume, but rarely has there been a more incipit skater. She is technically good, but no grace, no soul, no feeling. She just waves her arms about.

How this didn't win gold I'll never get. Passion, power, and the only successful triple triple combination. Nancy was hurt by all the media of the attack for the german judge to give her 5.8 for both tech and artistic he knew he could set it up for Oksana who went in to be a drunk.
JogaOhio she didn't win because she lacked emotion. Are you suggesting that Oksana was drunk while skating on the Olympics? Kerrigan is Katarina Witt wannabe but she was never even close to her. She was expecting a gold for two reasons: she is from the US so it makes her better than anybody else and she was attacked so she would get some sympathy points... pathetic. Her reaction to Oksana winning was the most repulsive thing I have ever seen. Also her behaviour during the Ukranian national anthem ... I was spechless. I guess that's what sleeping with a married man while being underage is doing to ones personality.
One small correction. Nancy was 24 here. Definitely not underage to sleep with anyone.
@@user-uf5vn5tt8u yes, Oksana skated with injuries and rightfully won the Gold.
I was so proud of Nancy's exquisite performance with no mistakes (that I could see) after all of her hard work coming back from her injury. At the time, the judges preferred the flashier and more flamboyant Oksana though. It was sad to see Nancy's reactions then and later on. I wish she had appreciated her silver medal more.
To be fair, there wasn't much of an injury to come back from - she sustained a bruise to her thigh, no more. She was back on the ice within three days and doing full back to back runthroughs of her routine within a week. The biggest injury was probably psychological but she overcame that well. I'm not saying that the attack was OK, of course it wasn't, but the way the press made out that she'd limped onto the ice from her hospital bed to take the silver medal was greatly exaggerated.
Oksana won because she was the better competitor. Nancy's performance was lovely, but her attitude to Oksana was terrible. I'm glad she lost.
That ending was superb
Nancy was amazing too
For being bashed hard soon before this, that was impressive!
She had a bruised knee, from which she recovered. Many people don't recall that Oksana Baiul skated with far worse injuries, and rightfully won the Gold.

It wasn't flawless, she doubled her first jump which should have been a triple.
I do agree that it was the skate of her life... she struggled so frequently in her long programs. I still prefer Oksanaâs unique artistry, but I definitely can see why Nancy was disappointed.
@@corawaller-jacobs8007 that's where Oksana got Nancy, the artistic aspect.
@@bethroesch2156 thatâs only true because CBSâs coverage played up 9th judge Jan Hoffmann from Germany as the deciding vote, and yes, in his case it came down to a broken tie with Nancy having a .1 technical edge and Oksana having a .1 artistic edge, and the artistic mark is the tie-breaker. But overall, Oksana did not win on artistry and thatâs what makes this decision such a travesty. Artistry is purely a matter of personal taste so I can at least understand those who say Oksana was much better in that area. I donât agree, I found them both breathtaking artistically. But there was a HUGE difference technically, and Nancy should have had that edge. Artistically they got the same marks overall-six 5.9âs and three 5.8âs. But distributed differently. Three preferred Nancy artistically (Britain, U.S., and Japan), three preferred Oksana artistically (Poland, Canada, and Germany), and three had them tied artistically (Czech Republic, Ukraine, and China). The problem was that those latter three actually put Oksana ahead TECHNICALLY, and thereâs ZERO defense for that.

While Oksana won the gold that year, she had a two foot landing that would have killed it for her had the point system been done then. Still I enjoyed both of the girl's performances.
I'm sorry? That was Oksana's night all the way.
@@211jump what Oksana make two foot landing and no triple combination
@@211jump by what standard do you claim Oksana to have had a more difficult program? None of her triples were in combination (not even triple/double-her one combination was double/double). Nancy had the only triple/triple combination cleanly landed in the entire competition. Oksana had one spin that was possibly more difficult than any that Nancy did (the doughnut-hole camel spin), but that pales in comparison to the disparity in jumps. Five completed triples to three, and 3 in combination (including triple/triple) to zero. And furthermore, if youâre looking at todayâs rules, Nancyâs toughest jump was in the second half of the program whereas Oksanaâs was at the beginning so that would have added even more to the technical edge. It needs to be reminded that under the scoring system they had at the time, two-footed jumps were not credited as completed elements, and Oksana two-footed both her triple flip and the triple toe loop she threw in at the end. So both landed Lutz, loop, and Salchow. Neither gets credit for a flip, but Nancy had the two triple toe loops in the combination, while Oksana failed to land any-doubled the first one and two-footed the second. Like it or not, jumps are the bread and butter of the technical marks. Other matters are nitpicky and do not make up for massive disparities in jumps.
I agree about the point system. It would have been interesting to see the scores under the more detailed and scientific point system of today.
Honestly for me,she was better at executing technical contents than Oksana here.Oksana had more jump passes, speed, flow, expression though.
But I still canât find which lady was more suitable for gold medal.
It totally depends on member of judges,I guess.
Nancy Kerrigan was certainly robbed of the gold medal for this skate of a lifetime!
Especially after what she had gone through
Normally Im not a fan of light costumes due to it blending it in with the ice. But I LOVE this one.
Wow, I don't know why but this particular performance evokes so much emotion. Brava!!
I remember watching this on tv it was wonderful.
GOLD in my eyes forever!đđâđ
Just watched the womenâs winner from Sochi then watched this...thereâs no comparison...skaters back then were of a different caliber imo
I believe because the older skaters had to do school figures. That helped the edges in performance.
