As an old school Star Wars fan, there from the very beginning, I find myself holding both Empire Strikes Back and Rogue One as joint favourites.

I was young enough and understood enough that before I saw the Prequel Trilogy come out, I know for a fact that out of the Original Trilogy, I love Return of the Jedi. But I do love the introduction of Yoda.

A New Hope (Star Wars) really captured me. The Empire Strikes Back held me. That was during a time when sequels were just cheap knockoffs.

I'm a prequel era fan. Yet ESB and ROTJ are my favorites in the saga. I'm also an OT fan you could say. The truth is that you don't have to be one or the other. You can be both. The Empire Strikes Back is partly so powerful because of the themes explored with Yoda. Those scenes are in my opinion, the best scenes in Star Wars bar none

This is the de facto best movie in the entire saga, you can't convince me otherwise. I'm pretty sure this was the one that George had the least free reign on right? The difference in quality speaks for itself when he's being wrangled rather than left to unfettered control. It also helps that this was the one with the least intrusive Special Edition "enhancements" that actually made sense.
Miss me with the AT-AT younger generation pronunciation thing. I'm almost 40 and I've always pronounced the individual letters since I was a kid. Are you going to pronounce AT-ST with the ST being "ssssst"? I didn't think so. How about AT-DP? Is that At Dipp? Nope.
I've only had the fortune of introducing one person to the OT, or SW in general. It was my brother's girlfriend at the time like 2 years ago, she was super into LotR but never messed with SW at all. I took the reigns and made her watch the OT, screw timeline order. She loved it thankfully, immediately took an interest in Yoda when he popped up in this movie.
How bout Carrie Fisher's coke nail though? Once you see it you can't unsee it. She was having a good time on Hoth, that's for sure.

At at was what we called it when Empire released. Is it correct? Nope. But it kind of stuck with us. It was never mentioned in the movie. So we just ran with it. I’ve introduced two generations of my family to SW. kids and grandkids. And it’s always fulfilling to see their smiles. I always start with the OT.

@@StarWarsFanatic you're clearly older than I am, probably by about a decade, though I could theoretically be a grandfather as well... I'm speaking from a rational stand point. I understand where you're coming from, having seen it in the original theater run and not having any frame of reference aside from printed materials. But logically, you can't deny where I'm coming from either.
I would also like to add that I have an old Kenner at-at, minus the chin lasers since they're all missing those. I actually have a metric ton of the old Kenner original SW toys, but that one's out on display and relevant to the discussion.

The George Lucas thing is a myth. There was never anyone overriding him. HE was the boss on everything, and he saved this movie when it was in trouble. Gary Kurtz mishandled Lucas’s personal funds and could have bankrupted him, and the initial shoot didn’t turn out great, so Lucas stepped in. By the end of reshoots, Lucas was on set every day, ghost-directing some scenes. So yes, he had control, and this movie would’ve been a disaster without him. If anything, he may have had marginally less involvement in ROTJ than this.
One example of why Lucas had the resources he needed with this is, as you pointed out, that this has the least SE changes. It shows that Lucas, unlike Episode 4, was VERY happy with the movie, and only felt the need to spice it up a little

@@officialmonarchmusic Um maybe dial it back a bit. Empire was masterfully directed by Irvin Kershner, screenplay heavily touched by Lawrence Kasdan. ANH's screenplay was heavily touched by George's wife Martha I think her name was...
Once Return of the Jedi came around, the cracks in his armor were showing with how he catered an entire act towards marketable kids toys. Then the PT happened, which he had complete control over. Those were a disaster in terms of quality cinema, they were great popcorn flicks though. The difference in trilogies was the amount of Yes Men he had at his disposal. Empire had the perfect amount of people in the production that were like "hey George, maybe we should do it like this instead".

    • @officialmonarchmusic
      @officialmonarchmusic Před 26 dny

@@cd5sircoupe Okay, here we go. Just because other people were involved, doesn't mean Lucas ever didn't have CONTROL. There's a difference. Marcia Lucas did NOT and I repeat DID NOT have any role in screenwriting. She was an EDITOR. Not a SCREENWRITER. I'm sorry I sound so exasperated but I've been dealing with this myth for years now. The screenplay had some *minor* work done by Willard Huych and Gloria Katz, but it wasn't a full script overhaul, it mostly focused on specific scenes between Han Luke and Leia.
The Empire script was written by Lucas, Lawrence Kasdan came in on the last 2 drafts as a script doctor. Yes, it's true he's heavily influenced the dialogue for that movie, but I'd argue his involvement in the story was low to none. Irvin Kershner was, in fact, the director, but when the budget began to balloon, Lucas was increasingly panicked and getting more and more involved with the production. By the end, he was on set every day, and he was basically ghost-co-directing with Kersh. Lucas afterward expressed guilt that he didn't keep his initial promise to Kershner that he wouldn't micromanage him. I'd argue this is a good example of Lucas being involved, in some way or another, with the production from beginning to end.
The reason why I say he had slightly less involvement in ROTJ was 1: Lawrence Kasdan was not coming on at the last minute, he was involved from the very beginning. He had a huge hand in the story and overall writing. 2: ROTJ ALSO had a different director: The late Richard Marquand. While Lucas maintained involvement, I don't remember hearing about a "Empire-budget fiasco" and I think Marquand WAS in fact given more room to breathe. If there were cracks in the armor, they came from more people than just Lucas.
The prequels are much better than you are giving them credit for, but I'll leave most of that discussion for later because for all intents and purposes, it's not that relevant. You say that he had "complete control" like he didn't have it before? What was one of these famous "Let's do this instead" moments are you referring to? (Besides the Mark Hamill one) Lucas still brought on other people as well, like his co-writer on AOTC, Jonathan Hales.

Warning 34-year-spoiler as I just turned 56 I would love to say I walked out of the theater with my mouth on the ground at the reveal of who Luke's father was. Unfortunately even without the Internet people still manage to spoil things. I was going to see the movie on Saturday but I happen to be at the local quickie and as I am buying something for my grandmother the jerk behind the counter says to one of the other customers I can't believe that Darth Vader is Luke father.😮 I was shattered well not really but it was extremely annoying. But that is what makes empire strikes back one of the greatest movies of all time the reveal itself and the fact that the good guys kinda got their asses kicked this time. thanks for all the positive outlook on Star Wars😊

I’ve always held Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back as equal to each other and Return of the Jedi as a let down because of the Ewoks and dumbed down incompetent stormtroopers; they were very close to being three perfect movies.
As for the younger generation, they need to learn the proper pronunciation of AT-AT, it’s “at at” not “ay tee ay tee” instead of us older folks continuously bending over backwards to accommodate their laziness. Plus, both AT-AT and AT-ST were only called walkers in the movies. Most people I’ve talked to in the military who work with specialized vehicles and transportation agree that AT-ST would be pronounced “at sat” when using traditional military pronunciation of acronyms as words.
