SMACK!!!
The Three Stooges: Best of 1958.
Year 23 of making Columbia Three Stooges Shorts.
This is the last full year of Stooge shorts made at Columbia Studios. Only
a few more are lined up for 1959.
Many commentaries have been written about The Joe Besser years and I won't
rehash what's already been said. The JB years are the JB years. Now with that
said, while Joe made it known to the Stooge franchise that he did not want to be
on the receiving end of Stooge slap-stick, I've found a few sequences here in
the 1958 shorts where he get's his share.
Many of the shorts here are lacking any real comedy,so you'll see some shorts
with only one cut from it ( kinda' like Curly's final shorts). I did however find
a few things uniquely "Joe" that made me laugh.... "Mother.. oh it's YOU!!"
Well, without further ado, The Best of the Three Stooges: 1958

- Fifi Blows Her Top
- Pies and Guys
- Sweet and Hot
- Flying Saucer Daffy

Moe was my great uncle, and the original Curly was my grandfather! And I love all the Stooges and Joe Besser still cracks me up!
Hey Brad!!! I'm really honored that you hit my site. I hope you get a chance to peruse all of my "Best of" the Stooges videos going from 1935 - 1959 on this site.
I missed meeting your great Uncle by about 4 weeks back in 1975. He sadly passed before a private appearance at a movie house called "The Old Movie Theatre" in Buena Park, CA. I did meet your great Aunt Helen, and Christine McIntyre and Emil Sitka as they still appeared there. Anyway thanks for the visit to my site.
Pleasure to meet you. I'm Teresa Lorann Phillips. 💖💞💝🤩🤗💯💯
That cigar eating gag was definitely one of Joe's funniest moments.
Really and truthfully the first 5 Stooges all had originality in appearance. Moe with the bowl cut hair, Larry with the curley hair in the back of his head, and bald spot in the front, Shemp (1922-1932 and 1946-1955) had the long hair, which would get messy when slapstick was involved, Curly (1932-1946) with a cut head, but still some hair showing, as if someone cut all his hair off but didn't shave it, with Joe Besser (1956-1957) being the last one with an original appearance, bald in the front, but a little bit of hair in the back.
The skit where The Stooges act like kids is taken from All the World’s a Stooge. And I really enjoyed the Joe Besser years.
Glad you enjoyed them!
I loved Joe Besser, and the3 stooges.🤣😂😅😅😂🤣
I guess Joe was a different kind of funny like Shemp.
@@sauluribe7082 don't get me wrong,Shemp was my favorite!👍
Dear God I made the mistake to watch this video during my dinner🤣🤣😂🤣I've never laughed so hard never seen it before I'll try my dinner latter😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣thank you for upload 😁👍
You are very welcome!
"He eats them like candy."
"Yeah I eat them like candy! O_O *Wait what?* "
Joe eating cigars. Reminds me when I swallow chew.
Joe was being a big time cigar moocher who had to eat more than his words.
Sadly we say goodbye to the Stooges longtime foil Philip Van Zandt, who committed Suicide after filming wrapped of Fifi Blows Her Top, the film was released two months later. He was one of my favorite Stooge bad guy's, his work with them from 1947-1958 was really good.
How does Gene (Stuten)Roth keep a straight face while Joe plays his face-turns-white-I-think I'm-gonna-puke gag? I know I'd lose it.
Great great question! 😄
I really do wonder what it would've been like had Besser's wife not gotten ill and actually did the Theatrical Movies from 1959-1965? You could see how comfortable he got as the third Stooge in his second year.
I think Joe would have done great in the movies. He was much more at ease than DeRita - who I always found to be kinda stiff and awkward.
@@MarkBlairs-Stooge-Channel Flattering will get you no place.
"Hey Does BBQ's Have Pits?"
"Incidentally, do BBQ's have pits?"
@@MarkBlairs-Stooge-Channel "Don't tell me he introduced you to Pocahontas"
@@GhostRiderInTheSkies "Height? About 5 feet 5 by 5 feet wide. Color of hair? Skin"
I never really believed that myth of Joe Besser trying to play his character that he had already been famous for, for one thing, I believe it would've been hard for him to try to find a different character to get comfortable with, for another, him playing that character just to upset Moe just isn't true, because according to Joe Besser's autobiography, Once a Stooge, Always a Stooge, Besser spoke to Moe prior to filming Hoofs and Goofs (1957), he spoke to Moe to convey his condolences over the death of Shemp Howard the year before. Joe and Shemp had been good friends.
As time has gone by, I've found myself enjoying Joe more than I ever did before. "I'll have you busted down to M.P.!... Oh, you already are.."
LOVE Joe Besser. The cigar routine is hilarious.
Height...About 5 foot 5'' by 5 foot 5''- LMFAO!
I thought it was pretty respectful that Mrs. Smythe-Smythe was never played by anyone else, as I couldn't see and probably Jules White could see that, Symona Boniface couldn't be replaced in that role.
Are you kidding? There's PLENTY of "Best OF" here! ("Hey, Moe..incidentally, do Bar-B-Q have pits?") "Oil's Well" is one of my 10 favorite Stooge shorts of all time (OK, so shoot me..); totally cracks me up every time. In fact, one Thanksgiving many years ago, I brought a bunch of Stooge VHS tapes over to the family dinner; afterwards, we all sat down for a nice, relaxing, post-dinner laugh; and..of ALL 190 Stooge shorts, WHICH ONE did me, my 2 brothers and sister all agree to watch?? Yep, it was OIL's WELL! ("How now, brown cow..ya bubble-brain!"). Any TRUE Stooge fan appreciates Joe and the antics of the Stooges, even at this very difficult stage of their careers. "Sweet and Hot" is a very charming short (except for the awful "dream-flashback" scene), and Mark, you've really NAILED it with the most hilarious scenes ("Indian Giver"). So what's not to LOVE here? Get a grip, folks..and APPRECIATE what the Stooges left us to enjoy. LR
A fun fact about Flying Saucer Daffy is that it was the last stooge short they finished before the stooges were fired.
Didn't know that. In its entirety it was pretty lame (The whole Cinderella angle with Joe). It really explains how lackluster the acting was by everyone in the short. Thanks for the fact sharing.
@@MarkBlairs-Stooge-Channel I did my research on production dates for the shorts and for Flying Saucer Daffy, the days were from December 19th and the 20th of 1957. They were fired a few hours later.
@@DaltonLampert Columbia was heartless. I heard - somewhere - that Moe wound up just being a sandwich delivery grunt on the studio lot before they got "Rediscovered". I read Moe's "Moe Howard and the Three Stooges" and his relative's "The Three Stooges Scrapbook" many years ago but have forgotten much of it. Thanks for sharing.
@@MarkBlairs-Stooge-Channel Moe tried to go back to the studio a few weeks later after they were fired but was denied access to the studio.
@@DaltonLampert Yes, because he DID not that year's current studio pass, was refused admittance, not to mention the fact the guard was not a Stooge fan, either.
Great video
Wow you can tell the guys were getting older look at the bags under Moe's eyes, probably was living a stressful life with his brothers passing away at a young age.🤔
Sorry Moe, not even close 7:14
Much better Moe 7:42
I always felt like Flying Saucer Daffy felt like the series finale of the shorts at Columbia. It had that feel in the ending and it made sense.
The new Curly isn't bad at all.
That doesn’t seem that bad, At least Joe tried his best at being a great comedian towards Moe and Larry.
Considering the scene of the gum-stuck-to-the-phone was borrowed from Love At First Bite (1950) & was thrown by Shemp, how did it get stuck to the earpiece in the first place?
About 7 minutes in, they are rehearsing their stage act and Larry is reciting lines with Gum in his mouth. Moe makes him get rid of it and he throws it out of his mouth and it lands on Joe's nose. Joe throws it off screen and - apparently - it landed on the phone ear-piece.
@@MarkBlairs-Stooge-Channel In terms of continuity they weren’t too worried about that. The scene asked for that and they delivered.
That is so funny Three Stooges
And how long (and at what expense) did it take to wire all of the furniture, etc for the one-second long sight gag at 6:47?? They could just have easily NOT done it. But it's one of those occasional things where Jules White and the studio went the extra mile, even at this very late stage in Columbia's short subject era. ALSO-- actress Vanda duPre, who plays Fifi (in "Blows her Top") was the real-life wife of actor Jack Warden at this time.
I still laugh when FiFi throws that punch and gives Joe that shiner.
@@MarkBlairs-Stooge-Channel The only thing I miss from your FIFI compilation is "That's ME SIZZLIN!"...oh, yeah.. ...Moe's absurd, stream-of-consciousness "Our key was made out of a little piece of steel."
But, ya can't have everything...might as well just watch the whole short. But that's what's cool about your compilations: late at night, burning the midnight oil..and instead of watching the entire short, you can come here and get most of the truly hilarious bits. Great "therapy".
PS..do you know the ThreeStooges.net site? Great research from these guys; I was very excited (and honored) to have identified actor Horace Murphy as "Dr Bright" (Dizzy Doctors) and Alex Novitsky as "Professor von Stupor" (Violent is the Word") for them. But they've done fabulous work identifying other unknown actors, including Don Brodie as the King of Moronika, Charles Dorety as "Stalin", and the little guy who plays the Japanese envoy..all in "I'll Never Heil Again". In my opinion, they've only made one big error in their casting research, but overall, the site is terrific. LR
@@HassoBenSoba Hiya. I've been a member of that site for a looooooooooong time. My account name is "Joe Strubachinkoscow"... what a moniker..
Come on eat the nice cigar Joey Woey. ha
Back then anyone who wins lottery or sweepstakes money. They taxes you now anything you win with money not anymore.
Gênios .
In the short oils well that ends well Joe said something to the camera guy but I can't hear what it was!
@rl rl He mouths the words "I hate him".

Did Joe Besser have it in his contract that no pokes or slaps be given to him? Or did I dream that up?
I've heard different variations of that Justin. I think I ran across it in Moe's book called "Moe Howard and the Three Stooges"
@@MarkBlairs-Stooge-Channel i saw on Wikipedia that there was a clause on his contract for no excessive hitting. So Larry said dont worry about it I will take the hits.
@@justina249 That was later relaxed, and Besser took his fair share of the slapstick.

There was no best in ‘58. With all do respect the fun died when non relatives showed up
I have to agree. When I put these last "Best of's" together I figured it was more of a relative term than literal.
I don't like Joe he makes me feel uncomfortable for some reason and his acting is like making fun of men who are not into women 👬
