Journey Through the Secret White Truffle Forests of Europe

- Private footage filmed in the secret locations where the most valuable truffles in the world grow. We are hunting tuber magnatum with Truffle Forager, Ben Sweet who flew out with Danni to work with us. At the time of filming, these precious white truffles were selling for 4,500 euros/kilo so stakes were high.
Ben is a licensed dog trainer, founder of the UK truffle festival and lifelong forager.

When this was filmed Jessie, my lagotto, had not been trained for white truffles. She is though now and I am in the middle of an update

Hello from Michigan land of the Tuber canaliculatum.. well figured I'd give you a update.. didn't train much over the summer I'm a bee keeper so I get busy.. started training again and she remembered those sausages that's for sure. I bury tinfoil truffle balls for training it's not even a challenge anymore. She gets with in 25 ' she's right into it .. they say season runs Aug thru November.. does that mean they start to grow in Aug ? How long does it take a truffle to grow? . I noticed that our Aspen trees need high pH so does the hemlock and dog wood. Red dogwood needs 8 pH or higher. So if I see those trees should be good area for pH anyway. We did scout 200 miles north lots of beechnut and huge boulders of lime stone sticking out of the ground.. been going out every morning to start the day . Seems like the dog is hunting truffles all the time she's looking for sausage treats takes it seriously.. all beef hot dogs I'll cook her steak she starts finding them.. it's been really wet summer for honey production so hopefully it's good for truffles.. wow what a awesome start for y'all congratulations
These are impressive results - you have truly understood the importance of the high quality treat! August will be the start of the season, though novice dogs may have difficulties with the earlier truffles which are often not as aromatic -so keep at it. You might also find you have some issues transitioning from buried to wild truffles - let me know if you do. Hope you and your girl are chowing down on steaks before the year is out!
Julie what do you think about Drahtaar and Cocker Spaniel as truffle hunters for summer truffle hunting?
Our dog Betty is a Drahthaar. They are amazing truffle dogs, tireless boundless energy but difficult to train. Would not recommend for a first dog. Have never used a Cocker but friends have and they seem to be a good solid choice and easier to handle than the Drahthaar

Julie, in what month was it filmed, I see that people are wearing short-sleeved t-shirts. The car is left-hand drive, Italian is spoken!
This was filmed at the end of October. We often hunt in teams and there will be different nationalities!
