In this video, we tackle the matter of Jessie, the lagotto who won't let go of the truffles she finds. By analysing such problems through the lens of three crucial components of truffle dog training (basic obedience, situational training, truffle-specific training) we can identify the root of the issue and effectively solve it !

I’ve seen my friends Laggoto doing the same. Easting all she can.
Then when she finds it, he must run, and wrestle with his fingers in her mouth.
Not only you get truffles that are half broken, but you risk a serious injuries when running in the natural environment.
One time he fell down and was limping for a week later. Lucily only that.
When I see Jessy and how quick she is, it is the same with that Laggoto I know.
Besides the hyperactivity I also find the Laggoto’s tendency to be affraid of people, noises and other dogs very problematic. Or better to say, it is not my match.
Eager to see Jesse develop into a grown dog.

I had avoided lagotti for years as I found those I knew to be skittish. However now I think it is all about training, you have to first make sure that the pups are confident and obedient before you start teaching them to find truffles. A lot of truffle hunters not only avoid these steps but think they are detrimental to the dog, that any other training will affect their truffling abilities.

@@TheRealTruffleHunters oh thanks for the new word - skittish! I love the sound of it.
I totaly agree. As you know about my short experience with my dogs, but I see how it really comes to the training.
Yesterday we were in the woods, and I was lucky to find a few Brumale leftovers after the Boars, and my Goldy started to get the idea of digging it and bringing it to me, without eating.
I think it is very good that I have spent much time with the tenis ball and rope toys retrieval and then made a switch to fiorone. He shows no interest at all to eat and break the truffle, even now with the smelly ones.
In the beginning he would break it in half though.
But the bacon tastes better than fiorone.
One other thing I’ve found special about unripe truffles is how they bounce of the ground.
So in my case, that is totaly against all the rules, the fiorone has shown a great value.
If I hadnt seen Jane bringing truffles to your hands I could never imagine going to the next level and stayed with being happy that the dog finds it.
Now my fantasy about placing a bucket on the farm, for the dog to bring a truffle and put inside, doesent seem so unreachable.
I mean, they live in the wood, so it would be nice to come in the morning and just empty the bucket, right? :)
This would solve the Boar problem I have here.
Oh, and btw, saw two of these guys yesterday. One smaller came at maybe 50-60 feet as I was on my knies shuffling through the leaves 😅
Not a skittish person, but you never know with these truffle eaters/planters, so I jumped back on my feet like a cat hearing the fridge opening when I heard him saying hello 2 times.
Must be honest, until I saw the size, I was evaluating the best near by trees to climb. 😅
Sounds like a good youtube title; the best trees to climb and escape the wild boars if they catch you stealing their truffles :)

Sounds like you are doing a great job with your Goldy, having a dog bring you the truffles is a godsend. No more bending down and destroying your knees. Now all you have to do is avoid getting into a fight with your wild boars and you are sorted!

Howdy lady. It's great to see this pup learning it's job. And I believe your approach to correcting this potentially serious problem well thought out. I begs the question, how do you know if the pup has received enough general obedience training before moving on to truffles. And I'm wondering how much this is affected by the breed. It's fun seeing all that energy but in the long run I'd like to see how long during the day can the breed continue to do the job before getting tired or bored and loose focus. No one has yet explained why this breed should be better than other breeds hunting truffles? She doesn't look to be what I would call a large breed so maybe they are easier to transport than larger dogs? That's not as much a issue here in the states with generally larger roads and vehicles. Anyway back to training. I like the idea of sticking to the foil practice truffles for a good while. Maybe even use some actual truffles wrapped in foil simply because the foil if wrapped correctly AND using heavy duty foil will be less comfortable to comp down on. Enough the pup learns that the fun is to find and GIVE the truffles to their human partner. To make thier human happy and that's when they get their treat. I'm looking forward to seeing the final results you have with her, I know you will get it figured out. But for me I'm looking forward to still finding the right British Black lab pup to train. Then in maybe a couple of years it would be interesting to get a long legged pointer that can go slightly further afield then the lab to cover more ground then my old legs can cover in a day. It's all about putting together a great working team. And it all starts with general training. Good old fashioned obedience training. This was a very good episode and video. Well done looking forward to seeing the next. Have a great day. 😁🌤👍🐕

Thank you for your interesting feedback Victor. My approach to the dogs is to start with obedience and familiarization and move onto actual truffle training at around six months old ( depending on the dog), obedience training is an ongoing process though. The first year is the groundwork but the dogs are still young at that age and they don't always behave as well as they should. The pointers will get carried away and run off if they smell something interesting, even when they are older and even with a good deal of obedience work. We also have a lot to learn - we are hunters before we are dog trainers so this is really a record of a work in progress and something we are constantly striving to improve . As well as our livelihood depending on doing good work with our dogs and having a good understanding of them, I also find this whole subject absolutely fascinating, it blows me away how our two very different species share this ancient bond and have learnt over the millenia to complement and communicate with each other. As a breed, the lagotto is meant to be superior as a truffle dog - it is supposed to have had the instinct to chase after prey bred out of it. Let's see how true that is! Have a good week and thanks again for taking time to comment here!

Hey Victor.. the Lagotto being the best breed for truffle hunt is like saying Tuber Magnatum can only be found in the Piedemont region of Italy. In other words, I think it is only a marketing trick.
In the remarkable documentary called The truffle hunters that got out last year, where they followed few life long truffle hunters for three years, two of them being 80+ years of age, they had mostly mix breed dogs.
Also, all the other content I’ve seen in Italian language that features older gentleman who’ve spent their lives searching for truffles has different type of dogs. I’ve rarely seen Laggotos.
Here in Croatia I know a family that is now a third generation truffle hunters, and they have 11 dogs right now (Karlic tartufi). Only 2 of them are Lagotto and 4 are Labradors. Hence I think you have made a good choice with a lab.
I follow a Texas labrador breeder on TikTok and they have beautiful black puppies right now. (Oak haven goldadors dot com)
Still Laggoto is excellent dog, as I’ve witnessed in two weeks as my friend from Italy was here. We’ve found some 35 different types of truffles, 6 of them being Tuber, and she ate them all. Even the stinky ones. It was amazing to see her running 100 feet strait from the car and find a truffle.
And she is tireless. In order to not exhaust her, after 4 hours, we had to stop.
She is also not interested in a treat. She just works for the sake of working. That is her treat. Run, sniff, dig, tear the roots withe her teeth and if you are not fast enoguh, eat the truffle.
In everyday life,I could pet her only a few times, while we were eating and I had something for her. Otherwise, she shows a clear sings of agression if close, but usually goes away as I aproach.
She has also problems with the friends 6 year old daughter. And this can be dangerous to have at home.
I had a Laggoto on my wish list for many years, but just because I was bought into the marketing of “the best truffle dog”. Now I am very happy that I have my Goldys though the training is still in progress so I can not say how far we will come with the actual truffle hunt.
Got myself a good camera and gimbal stabilizor last month so maybe I start publishing the training progress on my Retriever Babies account when I learn how to use the equipement.
Just to break the Italian myth about Laggoto being the best, like Julie is also prooving with her valuable content, that it comes to a lot of work with a dog, and that it is not a breed specific.
Oh this was one long comment. I hope you dont mind.

@The Real Truffle Hunters Howdy Julie. I like your thinking on your dogs. It's really giving me a leg up on training them for Truffles
I also see the link between them hunting Truffles or birds. I many ways they are so similar. First is learning obedience. But obedience training I believe requires more effort on the part of the human then the dog. After all if you're using a hunting breed dog in the first place it basically has all the abilities it needs. It's our job to show them what we want. They want to please us. It's what they live for and the treat is just extra. I believe it's important. In the long run to match the dogs body type to where you intend to hunt them. High arid mountains. Flat lowlands, etc. This is why I think eventually multiple dogs are a good idea. Also as you mentioned the age of the handler.Oh how I wish I was in my 20s or 30s. At 64 this may I miss those days. But I feel confident in matching my physical abilities to the right dogs will be great. And I do have experience working hunting dogs. Lastly, I've mentioned before I want the British verity of Blacm Lab. They are a stronger, more powerful breed then the American version. And generally better breed for hunting. They need less training than the American breed. Have a great day.

@Neven Cuca howdy Neven. Yea I think we are sharing a brain on this subject. Read the comment I just left with Julie. What I do believe is most important is not whatbreed of dog. But how to remain humble and realize it's our job to train them. They want to do what we ask of them but we need to be the "adult" and not just expect them to read our minds. Sir have a great day 🌤 😀.
