The lagotto is no lap dog, it is a smart breed which needs plenty of mental and physical stimulation. You may want to teach your dog to actually hunt for truffles in the wild or on your cultivation. Or perhaps you just know that you need keep her mind active. Whatever the case, this three-angled approach was developed by professional hunters and creates a rock -solid foundation on which to base your truffle training.

Good to see the pup.Fyi,my health is better and I'm back to work. Now about the pup. What have you noticed about this dog versus other dogs you have trained. What are it's pluses and minuses. Regardless of what a dog will be used for I believe obedience is first and foremost. But far to many folks misunderstand what your expectations should be in obedience. I work on teaching the dog to focus on me. To be watching me for directions in what we are doing. I'm the coach, they the player. Watching your pointer, is that Betty? Anyway how she finds/digs/and retrieves the truffles with little to no damage is so very impressive. I believe to encourage that good handling of the truffles it would be wise to never play the game of tug "O" war with the dogs toys. Never. Always teach and praise the dog for bringing the item undamaged and given to you as the game. Make that the fun part of the game. Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing the pups progress. Now for a funnier note, my first video will be out by next Monday or Tuesday. It's going to be not great. But it will be something. It was going to be a "catch and cook" video but I wasn't able to video the catch part. It's what are called razor clams. Soooo good. Wednesday I'll video my apologies for not filming the dig. But I'll show what they look like, how to clean and cook them. And of course eat them. There will be more digs this winter so I'm planning on eventually showing how we dig them. So get ready for a laugh as I struggle through releasing my first video. 😁

Glad you are better. Hope it was nothing too serious. Still early days to make any comparisons but I am looking forward to being able to do just that. Great tips - thanks. Hope the video is going well!

@@TheRealTruffleHunters so apparently I didn't tell you what was wrong. I'm diabetic, type 2. Also I'm a man so at times I'm a idiot. Soooo I kept forgetting to get my medication refilled. For about 9 or 10 months. Really stupid. My blood sugar got dangerously high and I suffered some set backs, like loss of 22 lbs of muscle mass. But I'm back on my medication now three months and I'm recovering and very slowly building muscle again so I'm getting better. So that's what was going on.

Sorry to hear you have not been well but it seems you are making a good recovery! Look after yourself and hope you are back on form very soon!!

@@TheRealTruffleHunters thank you. Yes my recovery is under way. But I have a long way to go. Getting my leg muscles built back up so I can go for walks in the forest is high on the list. I still intend to get my pup this winter/spring and begin his training. I believe I'll be able to walk in the forest safely by early summer so that would work well with the dogs development. The pup would be additional encouragement to get outside and build those muscles. Anyway, have a great day 🌤.

how do you keep the lagotto interested in the off season. Or sustain the training? By doing the above in the video?

Great question and I think you have touched on one of the reasons why there are so many mediocre truffle dogs about. If you take the dog hunting three months a year. then while the dog won't forget what it is supposed to do, its skills will never be the same level as a dog whose life is immersed in truffles. If there are other species of truffles growing throughout the year, take the dog out, if there aren't, then make sure your games are truffle related - I suppose it depends how seriously you take the whole business! I have made a video which discusses this same topic czcams.com/video/EkLpnBPBfkQ/video.html

Thank you! And So, I guess that’s my next question. Should I be training her solely on the black truffle even w the oils?
