    I was really laughing when you said you thought Lagottos were a "lethargic breed"! I don't gnow about others, but Eddy anything but lethargic. He is a crazy nut! Eddy is nearly a year now and yesterday I think there was a breakthrough. Previously, he would find the hidden truffles, but it seemed he was only doing it for the treats. Yesterday it he showed strong signs of having a ton of fun in the search and finding. The treats were almost an afterthought.

      Congratulations to you and Eddy, this is really the place where you want to get to, when the dog is truffling for the fun of it and no longer cares about the treats. You are right, there is definitely the crazy nut category of lagotto, I have seen plenty of them in the field, working alongside hunters using this breed- I was never overly impressed, as a rule they tended to just trot about and lie there lazily and lamely paw at the ground., As my friend Neven says, we have the Tasmanian Devil strain of lagotto !!

    Thanks for doing this update. She has definitely grown up some. Perhaps you shouldn't give her a couple of "Red Bull" energy drinks before training 😆😅🤣😂😁🐶. All joking aside fun watching her still having her puppy zomies. That's a lot of energy. I'm curious about what you're doing when she eats a Truffle? Do you still give her a treat or not. I understand the current goal is to help her understand her job is to find the Truffle. But eating truffles is obviously not good. Thanks for sharing this. 👍 Have a great day 🌤 😀.

      @TheRealTruffleHunters  Před rokem +1

      Hi Victor ! Yes, the eating the truffle is a double-edge sword. Good, because it's usually an indicator of a driven truffle dog. Bad, because you don't want to end up with a truffle dog that eats all your finds.. It's just a stage though which we are working through at the moment, Should have another video out next week where we get into the subject of treats and various undesirable behaviours! Have a great weekend

      @The Real Truffle Hunters looking forward to that next video. Curious to see what you do for discouraging that behavior. Isn't Betty the one who digs up and brings the Truffle back to you? It would sure be nice to figure out how to have her teach that trick to others. Good luck. 👍

    • @TheRealTruffleHunters
      @TheRealTruffleHunters  Před rokem +1

      Yes, Betty retrieves truffles but was never taught this trick, she just figured it out for herself. One day in the forest she appeared very casually, with a truffle in her mouth and left us all speechless. I think it is in part due to her breed and in part, her impatience. She won't wait for us to catch up with her and unearth the truffle. She wants to be done and onto the next one. She is insanely energetic. I think that Jessie has a good chance of going the same way. We are hoping to encourage retrieving with various fetching truffle games and also working on stopping her from eating any truffles she finds. !

      @The Real Truffle Hunters so what I was wondering is can you run Jesse with Betty? Let the old dog teach the new dog? Do some short runs using the practice Truffles so Jesse can keep up and stay focused on what Betty is doing? I think it would be a good use of Betty's time between seasons. If it works you have a new training tool for future pups. Fyi, I would love to see another cook with you using some Truffles 😋🐶 👍

    The lagotto is just too quick for me.
    Might be wrong, but as I saw also with my friends lagotto, you can not stop them from eating the truffle.
    Only one of my retrievers is so energetic and I find it much harder to work with.
    Perhaps not bad for Magnatum Pico that is deeper, but the rest of black truffles that are usually just below the leaves or up to an inch in the dirt, this is a problem. I can not run after the dog all the time and fighting with my figers in its mouth to get a piece of the truffle. 😅

    • @TheRealTruffleHunters
      @TheRealTruffleHunters  Před rokem +1

      Yes, I thought I would be getting a slower paced dog given that lagottos don't hunt long range like our pointers. Plan B, take up running .
      How's it going there?

    • @nevencuca1680
      @nevencuca1680 Před rokem +1

      @@TheRealTruffleHunters lagottos are in deed not long range, but they are like tasmanian devil. It is a pleasure to watch them, though definitely not a dog for me. Running in the wood can lead to a disaster 🌲🤕😅
      Right now, with 10 retriever puppies, I can choose the character according to myself.
      Interestingly some of them are always near me, while others do the long range.
      Now that my volunteers are gone, and puppies are 7 months old, I am taking training more seriously, and with all of them.
      Here is raining cats and dogs and the weather is just crazy. The hazelnuts are blooming for last couple of weeks.
      Boars are doing crazy stuff as well. I guess as more and more Brumale are ripening they are just plunging the area and feasting.
      They leave no leaf unturned.
      Fascinating too see.

      Would be great to see the boars in action turfing up the earth and then feasting on the truffles, I wonder if there is any way to film them? By the way, did you get my email?

      @@TheRealTruffleHunters oh that is a great idea! Yes, you can film this with hunter cameras that have also a night vision mode. My friend has one so I could make this happen on the next batch of truffles.

    Sorry to say, butt "Truffle Oil" which you can find in stores is NOT convenient because this kind of oil is made with ARTIFICIAL fragrances!

    • @TheRealTruffleHunters
      @TheRealTruffleHunters  Před 5 měsíci

      You are right, truffle oil is made with chemicals. However these chemicals are the same sulphides that you are teaching the dog to sniff out. You can start the training with truffle oil and later progress to the actual species of truffle you will be hunting.

      All truffle oils seem to work just fine as a training oil, later on you might want to move on to a frsh truffle
