Bass players and batytone players don't overlap... Not the same range, musical scope, not the same tone, not the the same function in a band, not the same playing... Kidding apart, you do'nt have to fire your bass player, anyway. Not for that reason.
Totally agree! I've been playing baritone for a couple years now and strongly encourage every guitar player to get one. Great for stoner rock, metal and sits perfectly between regular guitar and bass!
This "sitting" is the discussion I want to have. Been totally interested in a Baritone for a while but always worry about how this would work. Do you feel you compose (alto?) guitar parts differently because you have baritone? I feel like the overlap is so huge.
Saam I donât really write the songs differently because of it. It all depends on the style and the key of the song Iâm writing. I use it about 50% of the time in my stoner band. Thereâs another guitarist playing standard guitar, so that range is also covered. I have an alternative rock band with my brother and there I just use it sometimes to add some balls to certain parts. Itâs all about trying things out and seeing if it works for the song. The tuning needs a bit of getting used to, but you quickly get the hang of it!
Iâm starting up a new wave / post punk revival project and this guitar might be just what the doctor ordered! It has a unique and quirky sound that I find absolutely enticing. Fantastic video!
@@JubbyDubbis I made a baritone with a Duesenberg Les Trem and it worked really really well (I messed around with it and managed to screw up the tension or anti tension but set up right it worked great - I got someone to pull back on the bit holding the strings while I tightened the bolt to set the resistance right)
B-B is two and a half, not three and a half steps down. Also if you use thick enough strings it won't get floppy, I use 13-62 in a Les Paul and it's just perfect.
I am the proud owner of a Yamaha AES520 Drop 6 (baritone guitar) and I can say that baritones are very inspiring guitars and fun to play too. One can also approach a baritone guitar as a 7 string guitar without the high E string.
HOLD THE PHONE: get a baritone with a long enough neck "scale length" to accommodate your tuning. I play drop g on a 28" baritone, and the intonation is solid, its amazing to be intune up the whole neck. 27" will" intonate to A, and 27.75" will intonate Ab. Remember, its a solid sound, and boy do you hear it. Using a 7 string will get you there partially. But doesn't have the dense saturated tonal abilities the baritone has naturally. A standard 25.5" scale 7 string will only intonate to A tops in my experience. Now if you want all the range, get a 7 string mutiscale 28"- 26.5" , and youll be able to do drop F#, and keep that high E string. Thats my dream guitar. Ps: everyone needs a subcontra bass guitar. :)
Man! A Bass VI will give you the most haters if you cannot play at least like gedy lee, because he plays with a freaking 4.... and they look bad. Get a Baritone! :-)
I use a regular scale 6 string in B standard but I just use 12-54 gauge strings and it works great. I'd still love to get a baritone though but I have an 8 string as well for really low tunings.
I just bought my first baritone guitar. Happened to see a schecter baritone on Ebay at a steal of a price. Had to get it. I'll admit it'll be a bit alien to me for awhile. Even more excited after watching this.
Itâs always nice to find quality youtubers that arenât just spewing bs, awsome vid dude, subbed fer sher... Question, what would you suggest when looking for a baritone? Iâm totally lost on brands or pickups or gear or whatever for this relatively niche instrument
If you get a chance to try one, be aware of its scale length & suggested standard tuning. This will be the main selling point... the extra string tension/length on strings gives them a tone that literally sounds like thicker strings tuned tighter. Very cool sound if that's what you end up preferring instead of going as low as possible. See how it feels!
Would love to own one (especially a Danelectro!!!) But it's hard justifying getting one since I own a Whammy DT that can with ease turn any guitar in a baritone :/
I've been looking into getting a baritone for quite some time. I love my 7 string, but I'd love to try a something new like a baritone guitar. I've also been looking to play a 6 string in Ab tuning. Would that tuning work well for a baritone guitar...or should I just stay with my ugly 7 string, lol?
So what makes the baritone guitar? Is it the strings? You said that if you try to tune a standard guitar to match a baritone's tuning the strings will be floppy, but couldn't you just buy tighter strings to put on a standard guitar?
The29.5 " scale isn't too hard if you play power chords ? I have a big hesitation between this one and the 27" of the Eastwood ... hmmm... what do you think ?! This one sounds soooo cool too
I play a six string with the low strings from a 7 string with the G string being tuned a half step. So tuned B E A D F# B so so the open chords still work
reason no. 5: The bassist can just put a 5set on his 4 string bass and use that last string to choke anyone who says, or even thinks, that a lower tuned guitar doesn't need bass :D
I want a baritone 7-strings guitar to play with a looper and a sequencer/sampler/beatbox laying down bass lines and funk-like guitar lines xD Am I weird?
There are a lot of 7, 8 and 9s that are really ugly, but it depends. Schecter makes some pretty extended range guitars, but basically anything looks nicer than an Ibanez.
Furthermore, the point of getting a 7 (or more) strings guitar is for their extended range. A standard baritone only shifts the range of the instrument, even if they have other qualities.
If I buy a baritone guitar itâs because I want to play Amon Amarth and Staind. Maybe Breaking Benjamin, but I have a guitar that I tune down to C standard drop A#.
Supernova 70 thanks, but itâs actually not good for your guitar to keep tuning it up and down. Itâs best to just choose a tuning and leave it there.

Danelectro. Please. For the love of God, if you are seeing this, release a baritone in a reflective copper finish WITH a bigsby. Youâre welcome.

I started out as a bass player, so I may not be so bad lol
Ruben Colombe for sure you are good. I think you could do more with the baritone!
You can string a bass vi with baritone strings, tuned A to A though
You can string a danelectro with bass strings and have a v6
Man, that guitar begs to have some Qotsa be played on it! I loved the heavy dirty speedy riffs a bit before the middle of the video!
I was with you until you fired the bass player. Then I got an 8 string and fired the guitar player.
I've been thinking about whether I should get a baritone for a while and this video convinced me :-)
Awesome! Go for it!
Your score for video was very Twin Peaks-esque. I dig it! Long live the baritone.
Thank you kindly!
Also, if you have trash can lids for hands. 27" scale length makes lead play on the upper frets possible.
You forgot the best part. You and a 5-string bassist can do a slight downtune to B flat and have a 3 octave sync with a tenor sax
Well done pieces in many different genres. All of them sound authentic to me, and well played!

alright Iâm convinced
Baritones are so good ! But I always have problems with their low frequencies messing with my bass parts ... :'-(

maybe use less bass on the Mix/band practice etc.. Use a Eq pedal to cut out some of the Low end before hitting the amp
get a 5 string bass

Heavy gauge strings, no doubt, and a few mods to the guitar
But you can just down tune a standard guitar to baritone or to a drop A for example so what is the actual difference other than neck size?
Personal Problems on any typical guitar if you start dropping tunings past d standard the strings get hella floppy and don't sound proper

Personal Problems well sure you could but most guitars aren't meant to have that kind of tension of the necks, henceforth why a baritone neck is thicker and wider to accommodate the tension.
