  • With large tufted ears, a short tail and a trusting look, one could almost believe that lynxes are just big cats. In their hearts, however, they are wild and untamed. They are the tigers of Europe. This is the story of a hard earned friendship. On the one side is Milos Majda, a quiet, nature loving ranger at the Mala Fatra national park in Slovakia. On the other side are two small lynxes, fresh from the zoo. With Milos' help, it's hoped the lynxes will return to the home of their ancestors in the forests of Mala Fatra in the heart of Slovakia. For two years Milos Majda and the biologist and animal filmmaker Tomas Hulik follow the journey of the lynx siblings from their warm nursery inside a cabin into the wilderness.

When i lived in the bush of Alaska I found two small Lynx Kittens and raised them and when they got older they went off on their own. While they were with me fed them Rabbit Pheasant and other wild game. They pretty much fended for themselves after 11 months catching their own food. The Female made her territory near my camp and would see her all the time. When she had her first litre of kittens she brought them by for a visit.

I cried. I could never do what Milos did. I would be frantic with worry. I have two cats, one originally feral and although I know he longs for the wild sometimes, I could never let him go. I nursed him back to health after being attacked. He is the most loyal and the calmest cat I have ever had. I know it is not exactly the same. I have always felt so much for animals - even what I think they would feel . It was sad to see only one lynx return and not the other....People say animals especially wild have no feelings - I disagree. Thank you for a wonderful documentary.

The amount of effort and knowledge put into the "lynx rescue mission" is unbelievable. This documentary is able to capture the beautiful complexity (but sometimes simplicity) of interspecific relationships, convening empathy and information at the same time. Milos and Lila (what a great bound they have!), Tomas and everyone who was involved in this mission did a wonderful job. I hope that Liza and Muro are still doing well (I wish they had radio collars before the release!), and more lynxes are populating the European forests.

Lynxes are such beautiful and interesting cats and where I live (Belgium) also mysterious ones. For a few years now it was assumed that, after an absence of ca. 200 years, they were back in our country, based on some sightings. But those were never confirmed and so the lynx was to become "the ghost of the woods". Only recently, in september 2020, a picture was taken that confirmed its definitive return. Maybe even more than the also recent return of the wolf here, I feel it's an event to celebrate.

Sometimes its good to be free that is the essence of being wild, people shoul not domesticate most type of animals. This is a great nature story.

Every thing of this documentary is fantastic, love it, love the dedication of the couple, love the thought process of wild life conservationist, but I am impressed with the skills of Milos, dude knows most of the things to live on his own.

Czech and Slovaks are also passionate mushroom pickers, or are picking also other fruits as blueberries, strawberries, raspberries...Or mostly it was trend 20 and 30 years ago before the tech, when people used to go tramping and camping or go on trips or to summer camp, and sing the tramp, and country songs with a guitar, by the camp fire and play games with families.

I would have had a hard time saying goodbye to those cats. I am glad that these people could handle the sorrow of seeing them go into the dangerous wild.

Hats off to Milas and his wife, they really have dedicated their lives to the protection and conservation of the forests and the wildlife who inhabit them.
Living in the wilderness mostly alone they really are quite selfless people who deserve recognition for all they do

All Animal Shelters are overcrowded and in most cases, they are just a place of limbo for animals prior to being "put to sleep'. Don't buy pets on a whim, don't buy them for other people as gifts and make sure that you have the means and stability to provide a safe, happy life for them before buying one of your own.
This was a fantastic video, those Lynxes really are magnificent.
